May need to upgrade door bell transformer for mechanical door chime

May need to upgrade door bell transformer for mechanical door chime
I ordered this video doorbell to replace an older Ring, since Ring is increasing their fees. I wanted something that integrated with HomeKit, and this fit the bill. Installation went OK. I do not like that the security screw is tiny and located on the bottom of the device. If you need to restart the WiFi or reset the device, you have to remove this screw, and there is a potential for losing it.I have an existing mechanical door chime, which requires a small supplied electronic device to be installed in the chime. After finishing the installation, the physical chime would not work. I was told by Wemo customer support that it requires a 24V transformer, even though the documentation states 16V-24V as a requirement. The reading on my 12-year-old transformer was 20V. I bought a new 24V transformer on Amazon and installed it. Initially, it didn't work, but a troubleshooting tip says the battery needs to replenish for at least half an hour. After waiting, it communicated with the mechanical chime.HomeKit integration is OK. I can see a live frozen camera shot on the Home screen of the Home app (it updates every 10 seconds or so). Clicking on it brings up full-screen live video. On my Mac, I always get a "No Response." I have to quit and restart the Home app to get the preview screen to appear. It works better on the iPhone and iPad Home app. This looks like an Apple problem. Reading another review, it looks like the Wemo firmware has not been updated in a number of years (1.0.16).The video feed is not much better than my old Ring doorbell. My doorbell is located in an enclosed entryway with a security door. The exposure of the camera is set to the light level of the entryway, so it washes out the view to the outside.I like the integration with the Home app and that I have iCloud+, so there is no cost to store streams. The price of the device on Amazon was $80 (the Wemo site lists it at $250).I'm OK with the device, not thrilled.

I will be returning this doorbell because it is flat out useless. I can't believe how incredibly unreliable this doorbell is, and even when it works it is barely better than doorbells that are a fraction of the price.

When you open the Home app, the video preview is always blurry, and it has to be opened full size to view a clear video. According to Belkin this is intentional.

The flat mount is aluminum and fairly sturdy, but the angle mount consists of attaching a piece of plastic to the aluminum base using the smallest screws invented by mankind. While neither could be considered theft-proof, the plastic bracket could yanked off the wall by by a five-year old. Should be much better considering the steep price.

Motion detection is horrible. It will not detect anything unless it is within 1-2 feet of the camera. Anything further is invisible. My other HomeKit cameras detect people and vehicles that are hundreds of feet away.

It overheats in direct sunlight, resulting in it going offline and randomly disconnecting. It's only March, so clearly this will not work at all during the summer. This is a dealbreaker even if it was perfect in every other way. I didn't research this when I bought it because I assumed that this type of product would be designed to work outdoors, but Belkin's specs state max temp of 45° C (113° F). While this seems adequate, exposure to direct sunlight will increase temperature by 20-30° beyond the ambient air temperature. It is also lower than the max temp for Ring and other cameras.

Even when it is not overheated, it goes offline for no apparent reason, day or night. There is no way to easily "reboot" or reset it, but a day or two later it decides to start working on its own.

There is no way to configure anything via a separate app or even in HomeKit. You cannot turn off night vision, for example (and no, this is not a HomeKit limitation).

Extremely expensive. This is the most expensive video doorbell by a large margin, and you basically get nothing beyond what other video doorbells offer (aside from HomeKit integration). Other doorbells offer better video quality, configurable options, sturdier mounting, and better security.

The warranty fiasco. Was three years when I bought it, but it turned out to be a "typo."

In sum, this is a very poorly designed, unreliable, and extremely expensive video doorbell. Whoever greenlit this for release at Belkin should be ashamed of themselves.

If you are already in the Apple Ecosystem using iPhone, Homekit and iCloud, then this doorbell is a no-brainer. Completely easy to install and set up, even picked up the wifi password from the phone. Connected directly to the original doorbell's wires, so no need for batteries, and it rings the existing bell as well as Apple Home notifications. Recordings stored on iCloud, so no monthly subscription, yet recordings available from any Apple device's Apple Home app anywhere through iCloud. I'm a former Ring user in a previous home, and I find Wemo + iCloud/Homekit just so much simpler, easier and cheaper.

It’s been about a month and the Wemo is fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. I have a pair of HomePods nearby and it hardly ever loses connection. The talkback is very good and I love that it pops up on my Apple TV’s. The face recognition is fine, not great. It does an okay job at recognizing animals, packages, and people. The notifications are pretty good. It does take about 10 seconds to start recording after it detects motion. Sometimes it tells me it detected motion and I see that a package has been delivered without video of it being dropped off. Delivery folks can be pretty quick, but it knows something happened and tells me fairly instantaneously. Video quality is fine and dynamic range is average. My porch lights are on all night, so I’m not sure about the night vision.

I like that there’s no subscription fee and that it’s fairly secure and encrypted compared to other systems, that’s why I’ll settle for fine. It was fine enough for me to buy a second Wemo for another entrance. It’s expensive for only being fine, but it seems to be the best native HomeKit solution. I got it slightly discounted and would really have a hard time justifying the full retail price tag to some of the far superior competitors at lower prices. But apparently it’s encrypted unlike some of the others.

UPDATE- Subtracting a star because after 3 months, it’s just “kinda fine” now. It’ll frequently miss packages, people, and vehicles- and I have 2 cameras in the same area and both will miss everything. Biggest issue, these cameras need to be reset at least once every 2 weeks. Resetting them means getting out the special mini green torx screwdriver and physically taking the doorbell off and pressing the button on the back and then screwing it back on. I’m kinda over it. The perfect solution would be the ability to reset remotely through the app, but I guess once it loses connection there’s no way to talk to it. I don’t seem to have these issues with my other HomeKit cams, a Logitech and an Eve. Neither has needed a reset yet since installing them on the same network. If I were you I’d probably try something else, but unfortunately this may be the best HomeKit solution available.

    Update #2 September
It won’t ring on my HomePods anymore. Tried restarting everything and re-adding the doorbells, but no ringing on any of my HomePods. Customer support says that they’ll get back to me. I’ll be holding my breath. I found out because my neighbor stopped by and rang the bell and thought we weren’t home. We were home, it’s just our doorbell doesn’t ring🤦🏻‍♂️ subtracting another star. At this point, I would not recommend.

Update #3. Added a star. IOS 17 seems to have fixed the frequent disconnections and it now rings on all my HomePods. I don’t think I’ve had to reset it since the new update. Fingers crossed that it now works like it’s supposed to. I think I can recommend this doorbell cam again?

I’ve had installed for 8 months. It constantly goes offline for weeks at a time. This last time it has been offline for two months before it magically came back on. There is power to the unit as the external lights work and it chimes when pressed at the unit. It just goes offline. It’s been virtually useless. The camera is under a covered porch that only gets late day direct sun. The offline behavior doesn’t seem tied to an outside tempature or any particular time of day.
