Good product but some has some cons
I’ve gone through a few evaporative humidifiers and of all the smaller units I’ve used, this is sadly one of the better models, I say sadly because I just wish it were better.ProsGood sizeEasy to clean and refillWick is reasonable to replaceEasy to set humidity levelConsNoisy - anything above the Lowest fan setting is unreasonably loud. So this can limit its potentialThe unit completely shuts off after it reaches its humidity and does not re-engage once humidity level drops. The night light never turns off and it constantly flashes to tell you it’s low on water even if it’s full. I had to take a piece of electrical tape and cover it so I could sleep at night.Would be great if it had a remote. It’s 2023/2024, Vornado.

First let me explain why I’m 100% done with ultrasonic humidifiers now. Even though I’ve tried in-tank filter cartridges and filtered water, over time the ultrasonic humidifiers always end up creating a fine white white dust that sticks to everything— windows walls, ceiling fans, every nook and cranny of everything in your home. If you don’t believe me, run one for a couple weeks, then get a flashlight and take a closer look at everything in your home. Some don’t put out a noticeable amount of white dust at first, but over time, they all end up doing this, despite thorough and regular cleaning. Most people think of this as a relatively minor annoyance and don’t have problems with it, but I have severe asthma, and I’m telling you that stuff is BAD when you have asthma! I was gasping for breath, no matter how much medication I used, and it kept getting worse until I just stopped using mine and thoroughly cleaned the white dust. So I got rid of ours last year, since the expense and trouble of using distilled water in humidifiers running 24/7 during late fall, winter and spring isn’t worth it.
At first I thought the ultrasonics were a great trade off to the evaporative humidifiers, but I slowly began to realize that:1. You always have to clean whatever type of humidifier you’re using, so there’s no benefit there, and 2. The cost of replacement wicks Is a pain in the wallet, but it’s less of a pain than cleaning every nook and cranny of your home every week, and 3. White dust is so bad for asthma that it’s just not worth playing around with.

So after reading many different reviews, reading through online product manuals for various evaporative humidifiers, I settled on this one. And it’s AMAZING! Seriously. It’s very simple to break down for cleaning, there are no edges or corners inside that you can’t get to and wipe down, the clear water holder tank is super easy to fill because it’s FLAT on the top and bottom, and it’s pretty quiet! It’s obviously not as quiet as an ultrasonic humidifier, but it’s not a big deal. On low, it sounds like a quiet fan noise, and still puts out a good amount of humidity.

I’ve been very pleased with Vornado fans— we have 4 of them in our home. And since an evaporative humidifier is basically just a fan, a container of water and a wick, the quality of a fan seems pretty important. And this one is great!

The touch screen control is simple to operate, but keep in mind that if you press the button for ECO setting, then the humidifier will only work within a specified humidity range. If you want continuous humidification, just turn OFF the ECO mode, and press the + button until it reaches the highest humidity %, then one more press of the button will engage the CO, or continuous mode. It’s simple, but I think some people haven’t figured out how this works, since I read some reviews that complained that their humidifier would cut off at 60%, or would only operate within a certain range. This is by design! Just turn off the eco setting, and you’re good to go if you want it to run all the time.

Seriously, this is the best humidifier I’ve ever owned in terms of ease of operation and cleaning. We purchased 2 of these, one for upstairs and one for downstairs use, and I’ve only been using one so far, since we don’t have the heat fully cranking quite yet. But winter is coming! So I’ll update my review if anything changes.

On the plus side, this humidifier takes up little room, is easy to refill and clean. I’ve not had any problem so far with leaks, and the noise level is perfectly fine.

On the negative side, even running continuously this unit cannot possibly humidify a 1000sq ft room unless it’s raining out, and even then…our bedroom is roughly 400sq ft and I can’t get humidity past 30%. Other evaporative units I’ve owned did just fine (and if I hadn’t been looking for a smaller footprint I’d have kept my old Honeywell) so I know it can be done.

Also, even with filtered water I am blowing through filters like crazy. I feel like I bought a razor handle…I am constantly buying expensive blades, so to speak.

Bottom line: good form factor, quality build, but crummy performance. Would not purchase again and unless you’re humidifying a closet I wouldn’t recommend this unit.

UPDATE 1/4/2023 Reduced review to 1 star
The unit must have heard that I hadn't had a leaking problem because this morning it started to leak for no discernable reason. No location change, no visible cracks, the tank spring moves fine, there's no debris clogging anything, and the unit hasn't been moved (yes, it's flat and level too). Tellingly, a call to Vornado Customer Service got me an immediate replacement unit without even having to explain the problem fully. So...after 1 month+ (in which I have had to change the wicks twice, even using filtered water) can I really trust this thing not to leak again, or the new one to not start leaking randomly? Clearly this is a known Vornado problem based on the myriad reviews I've read. If the good folks at Vornado are reading these reviews, I'd be very interested in a concrete response.
UPDATE 1-24-23
So the company didn't replace my unit at first. To solve my leak problem they sent me a new tank and base. Leaking continued randomly and the unit began shutting off randomly even in continuous mode. From reading other reviews this is a common problem. Contacted Vornado folks who were very nice and this time sent me a new unit...after I emptied my existing one, and sent them a picture of the base serial number tag AND a snipped power cord.

5 days later I got a brand new machine...that shuts off randomly and flashes its "I need water" light while the tanks are >3/4 full. Yes, the humidifier is on a flat solid surface. It's also level in all dimensions. Knock on wood, the only thing it's not doing right now is leaking. Of course it's not humidifying particularly well either...I have sent them a detailed note to ask what we can do to resolve this and will share the results.

If you're reading this review in its entirety, I refer you to the top of the original review where I state that it clearly doesn't humidify the size space it claims it can cover, so even if all these other failings did not exist, the bottom line is that it will not do what it needs to do for you in a large room in my experience to date.

The price of electricity skyrocketed this year in New England. I bought two of these humidifiers because of the DC motor. We've been using them for several months now. Running on low it is very quiet. Medium and high get noisy for sleeping, but become white noise in the living area. Each unit uses about a gallon a day on low, running constantly, and maintains humidity level in the upper 40's. The unit is very easy to clean. I change the filter every month due to hard water. My previous humidifiers were warm mist and they were impossible to clean. I've gotten to like the clear tank, feels flimsy at first, but has proven to be quite solid. The cover is very difficult to remove, but does not leak. Very tight. On the down side the humidistat does not work well, if at all. I set the humidity level to CO and use seperate readable humidistats. The unit dose shut off randomly. but CO setting minimizes shut off. Moving the unit away from the wall also helps with this, probably due to better air flow. Overall, although not perfect, I would definitely buy these again.

I like the unit but no matter what I set the humidity sensor to it would shut off after a few minutes ( even when the house had low humidity.) It works fine if you leave it on the constant setting. I returned it and bought another hoping it was just a bad sensor.
Update:
Second unit behaves the same way. I just leave it on the continuous setting. The unit still shuts off after its been running for a while even before it runs out of water. I will keep it as it does help a little with the humidity and is nice and quite. Works as a nightlight and white noise machine as a bonus !

5.0 out of 5 stars A really well designed evaporative humidifier

I'm writing this review after using this unit for over a year.

Like all evaporative humidifiers, this device is composed of lots of separate pieces, and requires a fair bit of manual ongoing work. But when you buy an evaporative humidifier, this is what you're signing up for. Thankfully, this Vornado unit is really well designed, and all the pieces are of high quality. The fan is very strong and efficient, and can operate from a quiet level to a loud one. The touch controls work great, and the humidity sensor seems to work well.

It would have been nice if the tank could be top filled instead of having to pull it out and fill it from the bottom each time, but unless you have a hose handy, it's not a big deal.

Unlike smaller units, this device really pumps water into the air. It can do a gallon is less than a day, which is great for a small apartment.

I recommend this unit to anyone with a small apartment who wants a humidifier that actually does the job.

The EVDC500 is a cool wick evaporative unit, so it doesn't leave the white mineral residue "cool mist" units do. Since it doesn't heat water to generate steam, it's more energy efficient and the humidity is more natural. The unit works well and maintains precise humidity levels between 40% and 60% - normal household range - adjustable in 5% increments. It's well made and intelligently designed. Here are the pros and cons...

Pros: modular design, easy to take apart and clean; simple settings, easy to use, set and forget; DC motor is energy efficient, quiet "eco" setting. Fast, friendly, customer service.

Cons: fan is noisy on high setting; evaporator wicks need seasonal replacement; tanks are made of fragile hard plastic, must be removed for filling, will break if dropped.

One of the tanks on my unit arrived with a crack - not a result of shipping. Customer service FedExed a replacement which I received the next day, no questions asked. Now that's what I call reliable customer service,

Update: The unit works perfectly after several months of 24/7 use (humidifying my guitar room). No problems at all, so I've upgraded this review from 4 to a well deserved 5 stars.

I have now received two broken devices in a row. The first had totally unresponsive controls. The second has only partially responsive controls. I'm giving it one last chance because I trust the Wirecutter recommendation and I like the energy efficiency. But what a pain!

Edit: Just received a third broken unit! I now see others have the same problem in the reviews. It just shuts off after a minute or two regardless of the humidity in the room.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one is a keeper!

Last year, I bought EV100 which went straight to recycle bin because of technical issues - wick wouldn’t get wet no matter what!

Apparently, it was a known issue based on reviews on Amazon (US)! But, we threw out the box before using it for first time!

This time, even though there are tons of complains with small cracks on its tanks, I decided to give it a try - without throwing the box!

Thankfully, everything is 100%. No cracks and wicks get water perfectly.

However, it’s ugly! I liked EV100 / 200 design more than this one! It was unique and kind of reminded me of Star Trek stuff! LOL

This one is not that bad though. I can live with it as long as it works. The energy saving feature is nice to have considering Vornado’s smallest fans use over 20W!

The wick is kind of expensive and this one requires 2 = around $12 ~$18 depending how seller feels like!! I bought 5 pack for $12 and good to go until Spring!

I wish we could fill the tanks from top instead of removing them completely and take them all the way to sink! Many similar products have switched to top filling.

Closing the tank’s lid, you must be extra careful and don’t overtight them or - YES, you will break them - or cause those tiny little cracks = water leakage!

All in all, I recommend this product. If your room / entire space is about over 600 SQ, get this one. If smaller, the EV300 should do. Those numbers advertised by manufactures are not accurate.

My apartment is about 1200 sq (2 bedrooms) and humidity is about 35% - default setting + energy saving enabled.

Also, keep in mind these stuff are much safer and cleaner than ultrasonic humidifiers. Most important, you don’t get white stuff all over your furnitures or your hair!

We still use ZeroWater to make sure filters last longer, less cleaning and safer air to breath!

————————————-
*** Update as of Aug 2023:
I told you it’s a keeper! Looking forward to use it during upcoming Winter and many more to come! I was looking to buy some filters because they are cheaper at this time of year! When Winter hits, the price goes much higher - so I thought update this review from 3 years ago!

FWIW, Fan is no problem and not noisy unless you live in a small place and close to it. We always set it in energy saving mode so it runs whenever it feels like it. Tanks are safe and still look like new!
