Once I got it correctly set up, I love it. Until then, Yale documentation and support were pretty poor.

You can't use the Yale Secure App to set up a Yale Lock in Homekit. You have to use HomeKit. Once in HomeKit, adding the locks is a breeze. "+" to add a new device, shoot a picture of the code on the HomeKit Module (I kept the "receipt" for that purpose, and basically that's it, you're done. I can unlock my lock with the key, with the keypad, or with my Apple Watch using Siri. At some point, I'll want o test it from my office 12 miles away, but for now I have no reason to do so.

One minor quibble: I get a notification from HomeKit every time a lock is locked or unlocked. If I am "at home" I think I can do wihtout those notifications.

I’ve had the iM1 module installed on my Yale 226 for only a few days now, and it works perfectly with the Home App / HomeKit. I can lock / unlock using the phone, Apple Watch, and Siri (including on the HomePods mini at home). I also get notifications when the lock is locked / unlocked on my phone, watch, and Apple TV.

My original review is below. Essentially we were happy with the product then tonight around 9:30 I noticed it was unresponsive in the home app. The Yale app wasn’t working either. I tried removing and reinserting the module but it wouldn’t work. The “7” key on the lock menu would appear, but tapping it would just freeze the lock, and then it would do the error sound and the lights would bounce from left to right like it does when an error occurs. So yeah, unfortunately the bad reviews match my experience with it. It works when it works, but when it doesn’t you’re screwed. Yale support took nearly a month and a half to send me a new one after constant communication with them. I was supposed to get a notification when it shipped with a return label for the busted one, but I never got either. After the 3rd or 4th time contacting them it finally “magically” appeared in my email and I got the lock module 2 days later. Immediately returned it. WHEN this one dies I’m upgrading to the Connected by August module so I can control it via Wifi instead of unreliable Bluetooth.

Bought a Yale Assure Lock SL from Lowe’s for my new home a little bit ago. Finally bought the HomeKit module for it after a little bit. First off, ignore Yale’s “installation guide”. Just take out the batteries, shove the thing in, and plug it back in. I went into settings to the new “7” option and “connected to the local network”. It immediately said it connected to something — my guess is the Bluetooth within the module — then I just went into the Home app and added it. No Yale Secure app required. It works flawlessly. The best part is that it doesn’t show up in your settings app under Bluetooth, and it doesn’t require the device you set it up with to unlock it. My wife can unlock it with her phone too, and my iPad acts as a home hub so we can monitor it from anywhere as well.

Not sure what problems everyone else is having because it worked fine for us as we installed it in 2 minutes flat. The Yale app allows you to modify settings for the lock AS LONG AS YOU UPDATE IT. In the Yale app, if you tap the settings for the lock, it’ll have the option to do a firmware update at the bottom. After that I was able to change all the lock’s settings from the app, and then promptly delete it. Home app does all the lifting.

Does what it’s intended to, however I’m on the fence about how I feel about the Yale Assure SL in general. But I guess that’s another matter entirely and shouldn’t detract from my review here.

All in all fairly effortless to set up and nice to have modules like this in case you are on the fence about what smart home ecosystem to commit to.

Just make sure you write the number down on the unit before you put it in! You’ll need it during the setup.

Yale advises the iM1 module works on all Yale Assure Smart locks, but not the models rebadged under the "Lockwood" brand. I have the YRD426 key entry version that is z-wave/zigbee rated, and the specifications have not yet been updated to include the iM1/HomeKit compatibility. Works as expected with the Apple HomeKit, but not the Yale Secure App*.

*Warning: I cannot provision custom codes from the Yale Secure App. The Yale Secure app is known by Yale tech support to be buggy. They advise waiting for the update through the App Store. Contrary to advice from customer support, Do not attempt to refresh the iM1 or you will brick it. Just leave it alone and live with the defect till the app is fixed.

This device was unable to be integrated to home kit. The lock could only be controlled using HomeKit when one was within Bluetooth range. Once I left the house then the lock became unresponsive. Removing and re installing it rendered the lock invisible and unable to re join the YALE app. My return window closed 2 days ago so maybe if the manufacturer contacted me to replace the unit and it could be working that would be great. Update: The seller has reached out and plans to provide a replacement. Good news!

Reviewed in Australia on November 29, 2020
Yale is more than happy to ship its smart lock products internationally, but does not offer any customer support. My network module stopped working within 3 months, and needed replacing (according to Yale). However, because I am outside of the US I was told I would need to buy a replacement module (not covered under warranty). This despite my offering to pay for shipping costs.
