Ok, sorry for that. I was able to get it to install and even update the firmware and connected to my original wifi network. It has soooo much better coverage/extending abilities. There is even a page on extender configuration to limit the power (100%, 75%, 50%) of the extender so as not to interfere with the originating wifi signal. My kids can now wander the house doing whatever they were doing on their wifi devices. I had mainly gotten this as I was having problems with the signal getting to my Roku downstairs thru concrete. Now there is never any buffering and I can/could wifi up to 4K video. You also have the option to change the wifi band (2.4 or 5GHz) on the Ethernet port out.
It seems that to configure the extender, the install wizard app says to use any wifi able device to connect for installation, and that is not true as the compute power is beyond my new Samsung GS7 phone. My newer desktop was able to do everything in seconds. There was none of the authentication problems that I had encountered before. I feel a little foolish as I had spent so long trying to get it to install correctly but using only one way. I have no problems recommending this device to extend or even to be an Access Point (there's a switch).
My only beef with the way Amazon sells Netgear anything is that they lump all the reviews together for all devices.
================
ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM 2020:
Installation Attempt #1: Set up the router where I wanted it and installed the app. The app wanted me to set up an account, wanted my location, wanted me to agree to giving up ALL of my personal information, all just to install a wireless extender. By the time I'd given it my spam email address and done my utmost to avoid giving it any further information, I was already pretty darned unhappy.
Then I ran the installer, it failed (my assumption is that I was too far away from my original router, and there was no way to recover.
Factory Reset #1.
OK. Moved closer. Followed all the steps exactly. It told me, "Congratulations! Your extender is all set up!"
Except... it somehow didn't get the passwords correct, so while I could connect while close to the original router, I couldn't connect while near the extender because it thought the password was wrong.
Again, no way to recover.
Factory Reset #2
I hate the app so much that my next attempt is going to be configuration via WPA, but at this point I'm ready to just throw the piece of junk back in the box and ship it back to Netgear.
I mean, seriously. "Give us your wifi name and password and we'll configure our router to extend it."
It's not rocket science. I've written code to do exactly that before.
But even though I can code it, I apparently can't get my Netgear router to DO it.
That's pretty darned sad.
UPDATE: It took 4 factory resets, 4 different locations, and 3 installations of the app software, but it's finally working, and once it works it's doing quite well (27 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up, when my wired is 53 down 5 up). But it's all about the "sweet spot": If you're too close OR too far when you run the app, it first disables its configuration network (NETGEAR_EXT), then fails to install, so you're hosed and have to do a factory reset. Er, Netgear? How about coding it so that if the install fails for any reason it resets the configuration network WITHOUT my having to do a factory reset? And just plain get rid of the app remembering ANYTHING about a failed install?
