Just what I needed.
5 out of 5 stars
Just what I needed.
Perfect lightweight hitch rack. Handles two hard tail mountain bikes easily. No assembly required. Easy to put on and take off. One note that isn't a knock on this product at all: it won't fit on a Jeep with a 32inch spare tire or larger on the tailgate. Luckily I had plans to remove mine in the first place.

If you are looking for a bike rack that's light weight and easy to handle, but still tough - this is it.

It's not that light as it looks from the manufacturer's video (where they are throwing it around), but IT IS light, so much lighter compared to the steel racks much higher priced, overpriced actually. And IT IS TOUGH. Once installed you wouldn't be able to guess it's aluminum. There was a reviewer saying that after tightening the cam not only by hand, but even with an allen key as advised, the rack was still shaking - I believe his hitch receiver was the problem, the opening being too big, not really 1.25". My one fits like a glove and once the cam is tightened BY HAND it is rock solid. Pulling and pushing on the rack twists the steel Hidden hitch on my Honda Civic, while the rack is not affected at all. It is so easy to install, remove and carry. Perfect if you want to keep the rack in the trunk while you are on the bike. I prefer to do so, because a locking pin does not really protect ANY rack itself from stealing as the vertical part is held by one or two screws only to the bottom part locked in the hitch.

I was missing one knob (screw) so I called Kuat support - the person was really friendly. Three days later a got delivered 2 knobs and an allen key, which I don't need anyway. Pleased by the fast response.

The only issue for me is that the manufacturer off-centered the hole for the hitch pin with the idea that once you install a two inch adapter the hole will line up perfect in the 2" hitch receiver. Who cares about the 2" receiver, I just specifically bought a 1.25" rack. For the 1.25" hitch the holes do not line up and you'll be forced to buy a 10mm (thinner) hitch lock pin - DON'T. There was a reviewer saying that once the cam is loose you can remove the pin without unlocking it. I just installed the hitch, marked with permanent marker where the hole does not line up and filed it off with a round file. Don't worry about weakening the rack - you have to file off an arch just 2 x 5 mm. And after doing that you can use a regular 1/2 inch pin - nice, tight fit. You might void the warranty, but for sure the rack won't get stolen. Anyway it's a keeper.

Somebody complained about the anti-sway carriages being flimsy - they are not. My bikes are staying steady, not moving front/back at all. I hope that the rubber straps are going to last though as on some of them I have to pull quite a bit to secure good the bikes.

This rack is a significant amount more expensive than other two-bike racks. For that reason I spent more time than usual being certain it was worth the additional money. I must have looked at fifteen other racks over a two week period here on Amazon and some other highly regarded--and specialized--sites. I kept coming back to the Kuat Beta as the best hitch for my purposes. But, I was still concerned I'd be paying $50 or so more than what appeared to be several other very similar and very suitable units. It turns out I should not have been concerned.

First off, when I opened the shipping box I was impressed by the solid, effective packaging; not a dent or blemish anywhere. Then, when I got it loose of it's packaging I saw it was solid, tight, beautifully designed and a well-crafted product. It took a minute to pull the pin, turn the draw bar around and put the pin back in. It took a few seconds to see why the bar would not slip into the receiver; the anti-rattle cam was somewhat extended. A couple of twists of the 'T' handle let me slide the hitch home. A second later I put in the hitch pin and safety clip. I pulled the pin at the support arm, pulled up the arms, slipped the pin back in. I tightened up all three anti-rattle devices. It was then I realized this was the tightest, most solid rack I have ever seen... and so light! As an added bonus I think it looks great, too.

I turned the two forward cradles so they would hold and stabilize my road bike and put my bike on them. I noted there was plenty of room to clear the brake cable running along the top bar and then wrapped the four rubber straps around the tubes. These were the "beefiest" straps I have ever seen on a bike hitch; they held the bike solidly in place. I checked everything over, loaded up the rest of my gear and headed for the bike trail.

It's thirteen miles from home to the trail. That distance includes some very rough, paved (well, the map says it's paved) road, a freeway and some stop-and-go city streets. All that distance I could see in the rear vision mirror the rack was absolutely solid; there was no movement of the hitch at all. And, no rattles; none! Excellent! I think my bike was smiling.

I've always been concerned about leaving a hitch on the car while I spend three hours on a ride. To address that concern I've always used a cable lock to prevent the hitch or parts of the hitch from walking off. This time I had a better solution. In two minutes I had the support arms down, the hitch off the car, the draw bar parallel to the post and whole thing stowed in the trunk of my car. Man, that's the lightest--and tightest--hitch ever.

Over the years I have had several bike hitches, both hanging and platform, expensive and bare-bones. For a lot of reasons this is the best of 'em all. I gotta say it: I'm glad I spent the extra bucks and bought the Kuat Beta.
