This Brut Rose from Caran d'Ache features a truly stunning and elegant rose gold colored body. Finished with a light dusting of glitter, this fine Swiss made writing instrument will appeal to a wide number of personalities. Flirty yet dignified, this hexagonal bodied pen will fit almost anyone's hand comfortably. While there is no real gold in the body, the clip and push button are plated with 1-2 microns of gold.     This one may take a minute to catch on with writers. Firstly the hexagon body threw me at first but the more I use it the more comfortable it feels. The rose gold brush finish gives it a nice flair but the pen is very light weight, I thought it was metal when I saw the ad, it's plastic. Although I think it would be a better writing experience with a metal body, the goliath refill is excellent and lays down a solid smooth black line with no blotching and I am beginning to enjoy the light weightiness of it. I am happy with this purchase.

    Caran d'Ache ballpoint pens are the best ballpoints, IMHO. I write with fountain pens, but have need of a ballpoint once in a while. Most ballpoints have ink that skips so you don't get a perfect line. But these pens are smooth, the ink doesn't skip, and they have a small size, so they're easy to carry around. This one in particular has a beautiful champagne color. Also, the matte finish gives it a great feeling to hold.

    The minute you get this pen, the minute your expectations start to run high. The gorgeous aluminum box impresses with the its rather unique design with the pen's relief shape sticking out on both sides, the gorgeous color and clean branding translating Swiss manufacturing instantly. When you open it, a black velvet interior seats the gorgeously contrasting pen right in the middle like some sort of jewel.

    Holding the pen, you immediately recognise the high quality of the aluminum unibody that has a very nice texture to it. The clip and push button finished in gold match the pen luxurious stance without looking flashy. The minimal branding -a white square denoting "Swiss Made" and a Caran d'Ache logo and the model's 849 ID resides stealthily under the clip- all speaking further about the attention to detail devoted to this product.

    It's a small pen, about the same size as a Cross Century, but a bit wider and a tiny bit more heavy. It's pretty comfortable to hold and to manipulate while writing, and you will find time and again running your fingers thru the body in order to appreciate its texture. The button mechanism is silent, meaning there is no "click" sound every time you deploy the ballpoint. It's kind of weird at first, if you're not accustomed to these pens (somehow you expect it to click), but in the longer run, it's way better proving non-distracting in meetings.

    The reason behind the 4-star rating, has to do with the Goliath-refill that this pen uses. For those of us that use fountain pens on a regular basis, the writing characteristics for this refill are way disappointing. It's not very smooth and the ink color and quality does not reflect the great quality of all other elements on this pen. Compared to my trusty old Cross Century, its a bit coarser in feel when writing, thou it doesn't blotch when left unused for several days as the Cross does. The ink is really not much different than what you'd find in cheap ballpoint pens. At this stage in writing instrument technology, I would have expected an hybrid or gel-ink refill that could prove more of a match to the luxury feel.

    Since the Goliath refill is proprietary, you won't find third-party refills with which to replace it, but if you are willing to experiment, you can fit any G2 cartridge refill on it by cutting a few millimetres up top. That way, you can "upgrade" the writing quality with the use of Schmidt's excellent easyFlow 9000 capless-system refill or a Schneider Gelion one.

    Then again, if ballpoints are you go to pens, you won't find much to disappoint you here.

    I fully admit I bought this particular pen for the aesthetics. I've used caran d'ache since elementary school and everything I've ever used is great quality. You pay for what you get. This pen is well-designed with a smooth ink flow and balances well in the hand. It may look thin, but the hexagonal design allows for excellent grip. Plus, I'm far less paranoid that someone will steal this than the mont blancs. Those just stay at home now and to be clear, sometimes their ink skips. There, I said it. Anyway, I really prefer to take my own pen and write well when I have to, and this does the trick very well.

    This is a beautiful looking pen. However, if you do not have petite hands, it is quite small which makes it difficult to write with. And the hexagonal shape doesn’t help with writing comfort. And the ink in the cartridge is not great. You have to press hard for it to be legible. (It took 10 days to reach me so they sent it by the slowest/cheapest means possible.)
