Puuurfect For Everyday Use
Update: So I ended up keeping it after all!Went on vacation, set it for breakfast only (and let the pet sitter handle dinner) and it worked like a charm. My cat is extremely food-driven, and surprisingly she leaves the filled feeder alone. So I don't think she can smell the food in there. My original review:This is perfect for pet parents who want to auto feed their four-legged kids on a daily basis. Instead of filling separate meal chambers, this style of feeder allows you dump a ton of food in and let it go.For me though, I rely on my little fuzzy alarm clock to annoy me out of bed in the mornings, and really just need something for the weekends and short getaways. So I'm returning mine and going with the other style. It does have a power button on the bottom, so I could just fill it up then shut it off during the week, but I'd feel bad teasing my little long-tailed darling with a dormant canister of food in the living room. And one meal at a time isn't right for this type...When I dumped just one meal's worth of food in the bin, it didn't really work. The rotating rudder that pushes food into the exit chamber doesn't touch the bottom, and doesn't extend very far, so it can't sweep much beyond the center. So I reached in and swept it all into the chamber myself. So it's really designed to just keep full.It seems air tight enough to not entice hungry critters. My cat was pawing at the food dish, wanting more, but left the cylinder alone. This seems like it's a tough nut to crack. There is no way, in my opinion, a kitty paw could reach up inside to get food. I've added some photos... the food chamber comes out, and I photographed the bottom of it, where u can see a stiff plastic brush guard blocking the exit, and the distance between the food exit and hole to the dish is such that I just don't think little paws can reach it.The top of the chamber opens with a button, but not an easy one. In fact, it's awkword enough that I needed two hands each time. So that should deter your cat burglar.Huge plus: it plugs in.The minus: the first morning I tried it the thing woke me up.... out of nowhere I hear my own voice shout out from the other room, "Tinker! Chow time!!" Then sounds of a motor as it goes into action, then the sounds of pellets falling on plastic, then another shout out to my cat. The whole point was to sleep in! So that kind of defeated the purpose. But if you have a 2-story house or perhaps a sounder sleeper than me, it might not be a problem. And you don't have to record anything.Settings are for 4 meal times. Set the time, choose the amount, then move to meal #2, set the time, choose the portion amount, then meal #3, etc.It beeps at you when there is no food. A great feature. There is a battery indicator light to let you know when they're low. It takes 3 Ds, but they're not required. You can use just the plug, but batteries are a nice backup for power outages or whisker-faced cord pullers.Hope this helps!

This is the second time I bought this item. Our first one has worked for 7 years despite being pushed over many times by racoons. It still works fine, but I decided to buy a new one that looks a little better. The feeder has worked amazingly well and our cat is very tuned to the feeding time. He is often waiting at the bowl when the food drops. No issues with either machine and I appreciate the quality. Great purchase.

Cons: there is a bit of programming required. I found it easy to program, but if you don't like following the setup directions, then you may have some trouble.

4 YER UPDATE: I was looking back through my reviews and figured I would update my review on this specific product. I’ve owned the exact unit I originally purchased for about 4 years now and I still LOVE it. I now have 2 cats, and love that I could easily update the portion sizes. I’ve moved 3 times since I originally purchased, and this baby has held up through being tossed and shuffled hundreds of miles.
Pros:
-the machine remembers your programmed dispense times and portions even if unplugged, meaning power outages and relocations aren’t the end of the world
-super secure, the lock still works great 4 years later so my chubby kitties cannot break in
-easy to fill and holds a LOT of food. even with 2 cats eating, I only have to refill it every 2-3 weeks

Cons:
-like an alarm clock, it does lose the time when the power goes out or it gets unplugged… while rare, this is annoying if I don’t notice right away and fix the time BUT its very easy to set again
-my orange kitty has learned that if he rams his body into it, it will release about 3 pieces of food. it’s otherwise secure and he usually gives up after 3 hits anyways, and it doesnt seem to have damaged the machine at all over the years.

All that being said, HIGHLY recommend this product. If mine ever decides to kick the bucket, I’ll only buy this brand ever again!

Original:
I shopped around for an automatic food dispenser for a while before settling on this one and I am so glad that I did. It is middle range for price and definitely worth it. I bought it for my cat because my work schedule has me getting home at strange hours sometimes and he was not being fed on a consistent schedule. With this you can schedule 4 different feeding times and each one you can schedule a different portion size. It does have a voice recording feature but I never used it because my cat gets so excited at the sound of food coming out he doesn't even care about my voice. It hold an entire 3.5 pound bag of cat food which is very convenient because I don't have to have a partially open bag of food lying around. I would by this 100x over again. I swear this is the best thing I have ever purchased! He has been more pleasant being on a better eating schedule and no longer gobbles at his food when it comes out. He has also lost some weight and is at a healthier size which the vet is pleased about, because I can now control his portion sized throughout the day. I would recommend this to any pet owner!

I have had this product for 5 years and it's been a great first automatic feeder. I got it when my cat was just a kitten because as a busy young adult, I didn’t want him to have to wait around and be hungry when I wasn’t home. My cat is a grazer and doesn’t eat a lot at one time so it works out really well that He can just free feed as he wants to and I don’t have to constantly scoop food for him. Even when there’s left over food in the dish he will sometimes wake up out of a dead sleep when the feeder starts spitting out food and he will rush over to it for some fresh kibble.

So let’s get to the pros and cons.
First the pros: I like that it’s dual power. It comes with a power cord but also has the capability to use battery power in case of a power outage. Something I really like about this particular feeder is that the programming controls are on the top of the reservoir under the clear cat proof lid, which makes them super convenient to access. Programming is fairly simple and straightforward. It comes with 4 programmed meals a day which you can set to certain times. And you can set how big the portions are. I have mine set to 3 meals a day and 3 tablespoons each serving. It seems to work with having a grazer as there’s always food left over.
The size of the food reservoir is great and I like the sleek style. I buy a 7lb bag of food and will get two full reservoir refills out of it and each fill lasts about a month.
I like the width and depth of the food dish as I’ve read that cats don’t like dishes that are too narrow because it can irritate their whiskers. It’s just deep enough to keep food in and wide enough to where he doesn’t have a problem getting to his food.

Now the cons: I’ll start with the dish, and this is my main reason for four stars) While I like the size of the dish, I don’t so much like the inside of the dish. Only because the way the dish is designed, it’s flat and it’s placed kind of behind the chute where the food comes out. This is a problem because as my cat eats, the food gets shoved under the chute and he has to stuff his face under there to get the food. This dish doesn’t have a forward tilt to it which would keep the food from being pushed away as my cat eats. I end up having to scoop food out from under the chute which kinda defeats the purpose of an automatic feeder. Really my only other gripe is about the rotating wings inside the reservoir. The way this feeder operates is inside the reservoir, there’s a rotating head with wings attached. These wings are meant to push food down through the chute at meal time. The only problem is, these wings are soft and flexible which means they kinda bend (and eventually break as one of mine did) when they push against the food and don’t always push the food down the chute and it ends up getting stuck up there. I sometimes have to put my finger up the chute and dislodge the food so it operates properly. Again kinda defeating the purpose of an auto feeder.
Other than those two things, it’s been a great feeder for the past 5 years and I don’t think I’ll go back to hand feeding.

Reviewed in Canada on July 25, 2018
This was my first automatic pet feeder, so I don't have much to compare it to. It works very well, it has changed our day to day life for the better. We initially bought this to use while we were gone for the weekends only, but now we use it for every feeding meal.

We use this for our cat who is food obsessed. He used to try to wake us up at 6 am and then again at 7am if we were not already up to feed him. He used to jump on the bed an paw our faces. Now that we use this pet feeder for breakfast, he no longer associates us with food. He will sit and stare at the feeder praying to the food gods about 15 minutes before it goes off.

The portions are very easy to change and to figure out. Instead of picking 1/8 of a cup, you have to pick portion amount. We set the feeder to various portion sizes and measured with a measuring cup to see what number corresponded to his meal plan. Every time, the same amount of food is dispensed. It can hold a surprising amount of food, at least 3 weeks worth of food for one cat, maybe more.

There are 4 different programmable feeding time slots which you pick a time and corresponding amount of food. We only use three; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The 4th time slot is left at 0, but its nice to have a fourth if needed.

The dispenser and hopper are removable to clean which is a very nice feature. The battery backup is also nice incase the power goes out while we are gone and unit resets (not sure if this would mean he wouldn't get food otherwise, but better not to risk it).

We tried the voice recording function while our cat got used to it, its a nice touch. It does startle us sometimes as is very loud, especially when we are not fully awake in the morning. Even without the recording, the dispensers mechanical sound and the noise of the food dropping is able to attract our cat.

The black and white color is very modern and fits in with our furniture. It doesn't look like cheap glossy plastic. It blends in with the rest of our décor very well, something we never even considered prior to setting it up.

Our cat has tried to paw at the feeder and even stand on top of it, so far no extra food gems have fallen out. The unit is fairly heavy and stable, especially when it is loaded with food.

The only annoying thing about this unit is the clock is slightly fast. Each day we notice there was ~ a one minute difference. Over the course of the week this added up to about 5 minutes. If left uncorrected, it could easily add up to 30 min or an hours difference. We try to change the clock every few weeks.

Overall I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking to purchase an automatic feeder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good feeder for smaller kibbles. Feeder gets jammed with larger kibbles some times
Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2021
I've had this for a few years now and it has performed fairly well.

A complaint I have is that I use kibbles that might be a little too big for the machine and some times the kibbles will get jammed and prevent and food from being dispensed for some meals.

One feature that I wish was included was a button that when pressed dispenses a small amount of food. That way I could more easily test that the food is being dispensed properly to give me peace of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars No issues so far!
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2017
I received the machine sent in its packaging box (no second box), and it was packed pretty sturdy, to prevent any damage. Prep cleaning and setup were easy and stress free. I appreciated the plug option, as constantly replacing D batteries is a hassle. The feeder holds a good amount of food, about a month's worth depending on the portion size/kibble shape.
We have two cats, both of whom are devious in different ways. Our previous feeder (different company) was absolutely useless, as one cat pulled the feed tray out on the first day and shook the turnstile with his paw for more food. This one has a better design by far. One, the food dish locks into place on both sides of the main body, so even the most dextrous of cats would have issues pulling it out. Second, the mouth is too small for a cat to shove his paw into.
The machine is surprisingly sturdy, thanks to the locking dish. My other cat enjoys knocking things over and playing with his food, bowls, and really anything he can get to move. And he is strong enough to move dining chairs to be in the best direction for sunlight. So far he has not moved the feeder, and has made a few preliminary attempts. I think if a large cat like mine body slammed it, he would be able to tip it over, but since it doesn't slide, the cats believe it's immovable. They haven't tried to open the top, but because of the button press going pretty deep (farther and harder than any cat could reasonably push) I doubt they will be able to get in that way.
I haven't had any issue with the kibble size (Wellness at the moment); it's been pretty uniform portions. I do a big batch once every morning though, so any discrepancies may be balanced out. However, every time I do a test single portion it's been pretty standard.
I can see why the newest version has the app controlled feeding, but for my purposes it's fine without.
The only thing I would change is to add an optional stainless steel insert for the feeding dish. I prefer having at least the bowls in stainless steel, as they are easier to clean and don't harbour bacteria over the years.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy - high probability of defective feeder, with no refund from seller!
Reviewed in Canada on November 21, 2019
I purchased 2 of these units. One worked as advertised. The other worked fine for only a few months, then stopped working completely. Arf Pets customer service refused to do anything to fix this situation.

I use these for my cats, but only when I'm on vacation. This means my feeders don't get very much use and should last a long time. A few months ago, the feeder started jamming and displaying the error message on most feedings. I thought the problem was on my end and thoroughly cleaned the unit.
Then I went on vacation for 3 weeks. The feeder jammed and displayed the error on every single meal. Thankfully, I had a cat sitter, so one cat didn't starve.
Because the feeder jammed on every meal with no blockage, I finally realized the problem was the feeder and not how I was using it. That's when I contacted ARF pets and was told they won't do anything.

Now I'm out $100+.

I just want to add the disclaimer that I am generally satisfied with the products I buy, and I have never left a negative review on any product before. Even when there's a problem, if the seller can fix it, I'm happy. So it takes a lot to make me leave a bad review, that's how frustrating this experience is.

Easy to setup, clear recorded voice prompts, easy to clean and worked well on Orijen dry dog food kibble....till recently. Purchased August, 2018 for our 6month old Cockapoo.

About a year ago, noticed one of the lower feed plastic blades was missing....didn't think much of it at that time.

Now, July 1st, 2020...food is no longer feeding properly or at all? 6 of the 8 total plastic 'bottom feed blades' have broken off?

The two black upper rubber feed blades in the food chamber area feeds the kibble down to the lower set of plastic white translucent blades.
These upper rubber 'paddle blades' are still in great shape(not visible in pics).

Bottom line, with 2 upper blades only remaining (2 rows with 4 in each around the perimeter, picture clarifies🤔)...it pretty well is a paperweight at this point. Shame...as our little girl loved it.

Unless the company has a warranty for what I consider to be a defective part, these should not have broken off in less than 2 years use with 4 x 1 portion meals daily IMHO?

The Amazon Basic batteries have been outstanding and outlived the Art Pets feeder....1st set as well!

Could have been great.....
