Great steel
Our sharpening steal is 20 plus years old, it was wore out. My husband looked for a new one that was good but not so over priced. We ordered this one, and we are very happy with. We also purchased a finishing hone just to complete the sharping. We are extremely happy with the sharping steel

This sharpener works really well. Sharpens great and is long enough that you can get long stokes for quicker sharpening.

My review philosophy:
As a longtime customer of Amazon, I depend on others' honest reviews. I do my best to provide that same courtesy to others.
I purchase lots of items through Amazon, some I get for free, some I get at a discounted rate, and some I pay full price. I will always disclose if I receive an item for free or a discounted rate. I do a lot of reviews so here is a break down on how I determine my star rating of a product:
5 stars – I love it! It is awesome and I highly recommend everyone to purchase this product!
4 stars – I like it, but there are some flaws. Don't we all have flaws? I would purchase again.
3 stars - It was okay, but I would probably not buy it again unless there are no other options.
2 stars – There may be worse products out there, but you can definitely find better choices.
1 star – I dislike the product, I wish I had not purchased it and recommend others to not purchase.

Purchased this because the Wusthof sharpening steel we had been using had 'Wusthof' imprinted in the steel. This created divots which could catch knives as you were honing them! After worrying constantly about chipping our knives catching the imprint, we replaced that steel with this item.

First impressions - 12 inches is long! Much longer than many of the steels you'll see coming with knife sets. Honing 10 inch knives is a breeze on this steel regardless of what your honing stroke looks like. The steel is smooth and effective, this works just like any other honing steel but for a great price. There are no imprints on the length of the steel so you can use its full length.

The handle is a little less than ergonomic, but it gets the job done. The hook on the end is useful if you want to hang this, but the guard at the end of the handle is so thick that it pushes the steel outward from the wall. We just keep it in our knife drawer.

Steels are intended to hone not sharpen but this steel appears to have grooves that are more coarse than fine as in some others, so it may well sharpen as well although I cannot confirm. In using this steel I have found that it works very well with my kitchen knives and leaves a very smooth and sharp edge. Due the following I almost sent it back but kept it due to positive reviews from professional reviewers, appears to be made well and works very well for me. A good value for the money.
1. Listing in Amazon states country of origin : USA (one of the reasons I bought it); However, packaging states made in China. Misleading information.
2. Item was received without hanging loop: Will not be hanging so I kept anyway
3. Misspelling on packaging: Makes you wonder about manufacturer's professionalism

I bought this because I was led to believe it was represented as a sharpening rod. There are a lot of "experts" and "chefs" here who disagree as to whether it is honing or sharpening.
This is my experience:

When it was brand new 2 years ago there was a nice drag/grip across the knife and I could tell it was removing some metal which is what I wanted.
I use it once a week and use a different Henckel honing rod afterward every day which is smoother and has a ring sound to it. They keep my knives nice and razor sharp.
I haven't had to use a sharpening stone in a long while unless one of my guests cuts on a ceramic plate, stone counter or mistakenly puts a knife in the dishwasher.

Being 2 years old now it has less drag but still sharpens. I am due for a new one. Well worth the money

My grandfather and one of his sons were both old fashioned butchers - no saws! Steels are not sharpeners, they're to hone blades. Every time you use a knife, parts of the edge will become misaligned - a steel straightens it out. Grandpop was really fast at it - the showoff! Unfortunately I don't know where I packed it so its in a box somewhere. This steel got good reviews on chef sites. Get it, learn how to use it and actually use it regularly if you want your blades to last. Dull knives are dangerous!
