3 cats, 1 box, 400 sq.ft.

3 cats, 1 box, 400 sq.ft.
Before the Petsafe, I had been using the Tidy Cats Cat Litter, Breeze, Litter Box Kit System, 1 Kit for my two cats and really loved it. However, we got another cat and I knew I would have to scoop every day or get a second box. I really didn't want a second litter box in our tiny, 400 sq.ft. studio and I knew I'd fall behind on daily scooping. Plus changing the Breeze pee pads every other day would be costly! I began researching something that would self-scoop periodically so that the 3 cats wouldn't feel the litter box was too dirty to use. I settled on the Petsafe Sccop Free Ultra with lid and I've had it about a week. FIRST TIP, I bought some crystal cat litter at the grocery store and made sure my cats would use it - they did! SECOND TIP, I setup the Petsafe and left it turned off for a few hours while my cats explored it so they wouldn't be afraid of the noise. I also kept both litter boxes out for the first 48 hours until they were comfortable using the new one. THIRD TIP, the lid is nice because it limits litter spill to only one side of the box and for tall males that might spray over the back of the box it keeps everything contained. FOURTH TIP, definitely order the forever tray. Don't even play around with those cardboard trays if you have multiple cats. Also based on the reviews I bought the Forever Tray brand instead of PetSafe brand because the fit is supposed to be better. I have no complaints!Pros:- Size and smell are really critical in my tiny studio. I've been using the Scoop Free for several days and even with 3 cats it doesn't smell. The unit is somewhat large but significantly smaller than two separate boxes. The lidded Ultra version is large enough for my two big males (13 and 15lbs). I have not experienced the sludgy crystals that some commented about but my place is relatively dry and my cats don't have any urinary issues.- Noise is also important because my bed is 6 feet away. You can hear this unit, but I don't find it very loud and it has not disturbed me in my sleep.- Cleanliness is awesome. With three cats using this one box, I only have to clean the tray every 2-3 days. It's all neatly piled so that process is pretty quick and easy.- Forever Tray and FreshStep (or similar store brand) crystals work great with this system and substantially reduce recurring costs.Cons:- Crystal litter gets tracked everywhere! This is true regardless of litter box though. I highly recommend getting a rubber mat that catches litter.- My cats are currently super curious about the automated scooping and sometimes they stand on the moving door to watch the rake. Not sure if this will cause motor problems from extra strain in the future. Hopefully they will give this up once the novelty wears off.So that's my first week. I'll update later!*Update* Changing from 5 stars to 3: I've been using this product for a little over 6 months now. My cats like it and have never been afraid of it. In fact, they still play with the comb and cause the machine to freeze meaning I have to reset it to properly scoop. This often results in some poop being stuck on the backside of the box BEHIND the comb. It gets smushed back there and is not fun. With 3 cats I change the crystals every 4-5 days which really isn't too inconvenient. It allows me to have one box that I can sort of ignore (by see above) for most of the week. However, crystal litter is THE WORST litter and I've tried 4 different brands. I say this because it tracks absolutely EVERYWHERE in my house. Did I buy a fancy cat paw mat? Yes!! Does it help curb the onslaught of crystals? No, not nearly enough. They are everywhere and they absorb urine so it's like walking around crushing pop rocks of pee under your feet. For this reason I'm at my wits end with this product and have grown to HATE it. I'm going to give some clumping litter a try before I dismantle entirely, but note those are not recommended for use because they'll wear out the motor so even if that works it's not ideal for such an expensive product. Despite the mechanics of this being a fairly decent product I wouldn't recommend that people buy it because of the crystal litter.

I have a chronic illness that makes bending down and scooping litter hard for me. My poor cat went through years of having a stinky litter box because I couldn't scoop every day. We desperately needed a solution. Enter the ScoopFree Ultra!

I was skeptical about this litter box. I read the reviews and there were a lot of complaints, but I was desperate so I decided to give it a shot. Mostly because all the other automatic litter boxes were triple the price. I've been using it for a couple of months now, so I feel I am able to write a review. Here are my thoughts:

The box isn't perfect, the design has some flaws but most of them can easily be solved with a little ingenuity.

The best part is that it's easy to change the litter. Just take off the top and cover the old litter with the included box lid and stick it in the trash.

Set up is a little complicated. Make sure you take ALL the blue film off. At first the sensors in mine weren't working and it was because I had missed a couple of the blue film stickers.

Like all litter, it can start to get stinky. But if you just sprinkle some baking soda or Nature's Miracle Litter Box Refresher in there, it helps with the smell and you can stretch one litter tray out for almost an entire month.

The litter is expensive. I want to get the forever tray, but I live in a tiny Brooklyn apartment and don't have a place where I can wash the forever tray out. But if you think about it, if you stretch the litter out to last almost a month, you are only paying 14.00 for litter a month and that isn't a whole lot more than a 20 lb gallon of Tidy Cats. Plus, you are paying for the luxury of not having to scoop every day!

Some people have complained about the cardboard boxes leaking onto the floor. I haven't had that problem, but because I knew it was an issue, I went ahead and bought a rubber litter mat big enough to put completely under the litter box and catch the stray litter my cat kicks out.

The box is a little snug if you have a big cat. My cat is 11lbs but she is long and she is a side pee-er, so sometimes she pees on the poop trap flap and it flows onto the litter mat. Luckily, it is easy to just wipe down the litter box and the mat with a clorox wipe. This doesn't bother me too much because even when she had an extra extra large litter box, she still peed on the sides and it would leak onto the floor.

Some people complain about poop getting stuck to the rake or behind it. I haven't had this issue but I do have the timer set to 20 mins to give the poop enough time to dry out a little before the rake pushes it into the trap. I have also read that you can spray the rake with teflon spray and it will solve that issue.

Over all, I am happy with my purchase and will purchase it again in the future.

I pretty much never write reviews, but this product really warrants one. I've had it for about half a year now and it works great! I have 4 cats. The smell is gone, the unit is quiet, it's easy to clean and my cats have had no problems with it. I've had a few different self-cleaning litter boxes in the past and they always failed, the motor wasn't strong enough, it would get stuck and be a nightmare to clean. That is not a problem with this box. I have to note that I haven't used the blue crystal litter that came with the box, I've been using Prettylitter. I chose Prettylitter since it is crystal (so it kills smell) but it is also really fine grain like regular clay litter which my cats prefer. The Prettylitter works very well with this box. It's easy to clean and much cheaper as previously I was buying 2 large disposable litter boxes and litter every 2 weeks so even with the more expensive litter, it's still cheaper and I only need 1 box. I did purchase the plastic reusable tray and that is a very good deal (it would be cool if you could buy the trashable cardboard boxes empty tho).

If I had to pick some dislikes it would be that the plastic thing that connects to the magnets in the reusable tray always falls off very easily (it needs stronger magnets) and I had hoped that it would move the waste into a box or bag or something instead of needing to be scooped. But I've got 4 cats and I only have to scoop every few days and there's never any smell, so I am very satisfied.

My cats had no trouble adapting to it, but they do get very curious when it starts a cycle, they'll look over to see what is making the (light) noise. I'm including a video showing the noise level and a real time look at how long a cycle takes and in case you can't read it, yes, the counter is over 900. Solid product, I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran compra!

I like that it sweeps cat poo away so I have extra free time no worry to rush home to scoop out. But I found that if I scoop out the poo every 3 day and stir around, the crystal will last longer and less smell. I also sprinkled cat litter deodorant on the crystal. Sometimes if cat makes big/higher pile of crystal the sensor will stop. You have to flatten then press the button to operate it.
Overall I like it!

Love the whole process, easy to set up and clean up. My cat transitioned to it immediately and loves it. No messy or smelly sand tracking anymore. The crystals smell fresh and there’s no dust. You still need to watch that the rake is working as some stuff can get stuck but the management is very minimal. I would recommend getting the hood and a mat as some crystals can scatter around the area.
Highly recommended if you don’t like cleaning or smelling litter ever day. For 1 cat every 2-3 weeks is fine. 😅

3.0 out of 5 stars It doesn’t work as advertised and I still have to scoop.
Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2021

It doesn’t work as advertised. If your cat only urinates, it works fine. However, it does not work properly for bowel movements whatsoever. It clogs up and then jams in place. If by chance, it manages to make it to the collecting compartment, it cannot scoop it up and deposit the waste accordingly.
