OK, moms, let's get real. Breast-feeding is really hard in the beginning. No one tells you that it takes a lot of coordination, can be VERY painful, and there are lots of things that can go wrong (infections, baby not getting enough milk, mom rushed in to surgery, BLISTERS!!). I know every mom wants to do what is best for her baby and most would agree that breast-feeding is ideal, but it can be so easy to give up when the going gets tough and the hospital sends you home with formula. Here's where this book is absolutely essential. It will give you the confidence you need to keep going. Whatever goes wrong, you can find it in this book, and it will assure you that it's going to be okay and tell you what to do about it. And then it will remind you why this is best for your baby and cheer you on -- You CAN do it! I know that breast-feeding is occasionally impossible, but I've seen too many moms give up too soon. I wish this was mandatory reading for all new moms. What a great baby shower gift this would be -- it might be the gift of breast-feeding for a baby whose mom might otherwise give up.

This is my favorite book about breastfeeding, offering a lot of very helpful information about the how and why and what to do if things don't go smooth. It covers many different topics. The appendix offers a long list of other titles for those wanting more in depth information as well as several lists of breastfeeding products and organisations that offer support and where to find them.
Many have commented that this book is written only for attachment-parenting parents. La Leche League's mission is to provide mothers with information to help them establish a successful breastfeeding relationship with their babies. If someone had a negative experience with an individual representing LLL that doesn't mean that LLL is judgmental or unaccepting/intolerant of mothers who don't stay home with their babies or mothers who don't wait for their babies to self wean.
I found this book to offer information that also encourages me to follow my intuition and to listen to my baby since as a mother I am the expert on my baby.

This book is the ultimate in information for any woman who plans to breast feed her infant. The first book got me through any challenge I faced when nursing my three children and contained the most useful information of any source I found. Now it is a standard gift I give to any woman I know who is planning to breast feed her new infant. I've given several editions and this most recent 7th edition is well loved by the woman who received it a few months ago as part of a baby gift after the birth of her first son.

Some people may be turned off by referrences to 'the family bed' thinking it is too radical, and thus dismiss the book entirely, but that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater! You only need to take what you want to use to help you successfully nurse your child, and this book has it all!

LLL is the most authoritative place to turn to for breastfeeding help. I suggest every breastfeeding mom have this book on hand. Take what works from the book for you and your family and leave the rest. Mismanagement of breastfeeding is the most common reason moms are unable to breastfeed. Read this before you get pregnant, plan a natural birth and bring several vials of colostrum with you to the hospital wtih specific instructions that baby only receive colostrum (no artificial baby milk). Ask that your baby be born unmedicated (that means no meds for you) and that you and your baby be left uninterrupted for the first hour after birth so baby can breastfeed within the first 1/2-one hour after birth. Make contact with an LLL leader and a lactation consultant before birth and as many breastfeeding friends/family as you can so you can turn to them for support and avoid mismanagement of what mother nature intended our babies to do. Bring this book with you to your birth along with colostrum so it is clear to your caregivers what you plan to do. Be determined since you are up against millions of $$ to be made if you don't breastfeed and our society is not set up to help you breastfeed. Good luck.

As a nursing mom, I find this book to be invaluable. I bought it to read while in my Bradley class, and have used it for so many things after the baby was born. What a great resource, and one I'd recommend to any mom who is planning on nursing! If you aren't planning on nursing, I'd suggest you read it, as well, because it's got a lot of great information on the benefits of nursing, as well, and how to try to make it work for you.

I bought this book when pregnant with my first child and began reading it before she was born. After she was born I had a very hard time with breastfeeding. There were also a lot of questions that I had and some things that I was just curious about. I found this book to be a good reference for anything I became curious about and it was very easy to go to the back of the book to the index and quickly look up what chapter or page I needed to look at.
I have now passed this book onto my sister who has used it a few times to look up things that shes become curious about.

I bought this book just before my 1st child was born. I now have two kids and breastfed both of them until 14 months and then 16 months with the 2nd. This book has been a fantastic reference, especially during the early weeks with my first. It gave me the confidence to know that women really are successful at exclusively breastfeeding their infants! This book is great at explaining how to increase and maintain your milk supply, troubleshooting problems, and general reference information. There were some parts I didn't agree with 100%, but that didn't negate the useful parts I did enjoy and benefit from!

C'est pas mal. J'ai lu quelques parties du livre. Mais ce qui compte le plus c'est la pratique. Allaitement de 2.5 ans pour le premier et de 2 ans et un mois pour le second. Je peux écrire un bouquin moi-même à présent.

Get this book, honestly if you are a breastfeeding mother, intend to be or like me are just a supporting partner you need this book in your life.

So much great advice about parenting in general but awesome tips for breastfeeding mothers, actually helped my partner get the confidence to go to classes where she found, in part because of this book that she was already considered to have great advanced knowledge.
