Questions to ask before traveling with your pet:
- Is my pet too old or young to handle the stress of traveling?
- Is my pet in poor health?
- Is my pet recovering from surgery or a traumatic event?
- Is my pet pregnant?
- Does my pet get motion sickness?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, check with your vet if your pet is suited for transport in its current condition.
Prep your pet:
Be sure to purchase the correct size of carrier appropriate for the weight of your pet. Using a carrier that is too large could result in motion sickness. Your pet should have enough room to stand up and turn around inside the carrier.
Prior to traveling make sure to allow ample time for your pet to familiarize itself with its carrier. We recommend purchasing a carrier at least a month in advance to allow your pet sufficient time to become accustomed to it.
Put the carrier in an open area so the pet can investigate and get used to its scent and shape. Put one of your pet's toys, treats or blankets inside the carrier to entice your pet to enter it willingly. Do not force your pet inside the carrier. Take your pet on short trips in the carrier so they get used to being transported in it. If your pet does not like being inside, or tries to escape from the carrier, we recommend further training prior to travel or considering transporting your animal in a hard-sided carrier.
Traveling by Plane
- Always check your airline's rules and regulations prior to flying. Your pet should be securely in the carrier at all times when aboard the aircraft.
- Always supervise your pet. NEVER leave your pet unsupervised or unattended in a carrier. Failure to do so can result in damage to the carrier, escape, or injury to your pet.
- Never give your pet sedatives or tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet. If prescribed, be sure to get clear and precise instructions as to the dosage, the frequency of the dosage and any risks involved with sedating your pet. Follow the instructions exactly. Do not increase the dosage at your own discretion as pets can easily be over-medicated, especially when flying, as increased altitude can cause cardiovascular and respiratory problems.
- Do not allow your pet to travel with a choke, pinch or training collar. Cats should travel with a collar that has a quick release or break-away feature.
- Leads should not be used when your pet is enclosed in the carrier.
- Be sure your pet's collar is secure and clearly displays proof of current vaccinations, your name, address and contact info.
Travel Tips for You and Your Pet
- Book reservations for you and your pet early. Most airlines restrict the number of pets allowed on board each flight.
- Complete and print your Guaranteed on Board® forms, or call your airline for its specific requirements.
- Research your destination city’s pet rules & regulations, along with those of where you will be staying.
- Prep your pet for travel. Be sure it has ample time to adjust to its carrier and practice traveling with your pet in the carrier on short trips prior to the big day.
- Make an appointment with your vet. Acquire a health certificate and ensure your pet is up-to-date with its shots no more than 10 days prior to your departure.
- Research and create a list of local vets and emergency clinics at your destination.
- Be sure you have all of your and your pet’s documentation in order. Do you have your pet’s health certificate? Do you have your Guaranteed On Board® forms to show to the gate agent?
- Have your contact info clearly and securely labeled on both your pet’s carrier and on your pet’s tags.
- Pack for your pet in advance so you can be sure nothing is forgotten.
- Arrive early on your day of departure and allow ample time for you and your pet to check-in and board your flight. Plan ahead and know various locations at the airport(s) where your pet can relive itself prior to (and between) flying.
Traveling by Car
- Always supervise your pet. NEVER leave your pet unsupervised or unattended in a carrier. Failure to do so can result in damage to the carrier, escape, or injury to your pet.
- Secure the carrier in the backseat of the car only. Do not secure the carrier to the front seat - your pet will be the safest in the back. The seatbelt can be secured through the luggage band located on the rear side panel of the carrier. The shoulder strap can be secured around the headrest if applicable.
- Never give your pet sedatives or tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet. If prescribed, be sure to get clear and precise instructions as to the dosage, the frequency of the dosage and any risks involved with sedating your pet. Follow the instructions exactly. Do not increase the dosage at your own discretion as pets can easily be over-medicated.
The Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier is stylish, lightweight, and conforms with commercial airline carry-on specifications. It features a durable quilted nylon construction, mesh panels for ventilation, and two convenient entries: front and top. Its seat belt safety strap fits conveniently over upright luggage handles. The faux lambskin liner is machine washable and the carrier is to be spot cleaned only. All Sherpa carriers are protected by a one-year limited warranty against manufacturer defects.

We flew Southwest Airlines to and from our destination including the connecting flights. Southwest Airlines is apart of Sherpa's GOB; however, Southwest Airlines only approves the small Sherpa and not the medium or the large. We purchased the medium anyways so that our dog had more room. There were no issues with the size of our Sherpa (medium) and Southwest. They didn't look at it or inspect it. The middle seats on Southwest have more leg room than the aisle and window seats, which is where my husband sat with the carrier. During take off and landing, the carrier has to be under the seat, but in the air we were allowed to have the Sherpa in our lap on all flights with no issues.
As far as the carrier itself, the medium was a good size for our 7 lb Papillon. He was able to lie down comfortably with the top closed and was able to stand with his head poking out. The carrier was not that heavy while walking with him in it, maybe around 10lbs. There is also a pocket that zips on the back of the Sherpa where we kept his leash, a collapsible water bowl, and some treats. Our dog also had no issues with the Sherpa, but I also prepared him by training him with the Sherpa before we traveled. I would carry him in the Sherpa around our house and reward him with treats if he went inside of it, sat in it, or would lie down in it.
I have included some photos with this review for reference:
Photo #1: The carrier itself, which has a faux lambskin liner.
Photo #2: The rear pocket that zips, which we kept a leash, a collapsible water bowel, and a bag of treats in.
Photo #3: Our dog standing in the Sherpa. For reference, he is 11 inches in height and 7lbs.
Photo #4: Our dog sitting in the Sherpa.
Photo #5: Our dog laying down in the Sherpa.
Photo #6: My husband sitting in the middle seat on Southwest Airlines with the Sherpa underneath the seat in front of him during take off. The Sherpa fit fine with no issues and my husband was not uncomfortable.
Photo #7: My husband sitting in the middle seat on Southwest Airlines during landing. We zipped the top flap up just enough where our dog could poke his head out and see us.
Photo #8: During the flight, we were able to have the Sherpa in our laps so that we could comfort him. This was not uncomfortable and our dog did fine.
Photo #8: Our dog slept in the Sherpa comfortably with the Sherpa in our laps during the flight.
Overall, this was a great carrier to travel with, our dog was as comfortable as he could be all things considered, and I would highly recommend it considering their "Guaranteed On-Board." Be sure to check their website first before you purchase to ensure that your airline is apart of Sherpa's "Guaranteed On-Board" at www.flygob.com.

Why I give this five stars:
1. It is extremely convenient for transporting a pet: You have a front zippered opening through which they can climb in on their own (which makes a pet feel better about the imprisonment) and a top zipper for letting a little head poke out now and then without the "cargo" escaping (or to slip in some little treats or ice cubes now and then). The zippered compartment on the other side will make keeping Daphne's documents much handier and means I don't have to be the frazzled lady holding up a hundred people in line while I frantically empty out my entire carryon searching for mandatory papers.
2. The liner is soft, removable, and can be easily cleaned. If we have any accidents from airlines not letting her take potty breaks, that's going to be something I REALLY appreciate. Daphne likes the lining and can even be persuaded now to nap in the carrier (we've been doing daily practice for the past three weeks), which gives me hope that I will not end up with an entire airplane full of people who hate me on our departure date. Oh, and the liner fits snugly enough that, thus far, Daphne has been content to cuddle on it rather than attempt to rip it out and kill it (even the sweetest dogs get temperamental after multiple hours in a bag).
3. The size is perfect. The right height for airlines like Asiana (they seem to be the strictest on height, FYI), plus the whole caboodle will fit nicely under the seat without squishing or inconveniencing my little fur-minion.
4. Mesh on three sides, so that Daphne has plenty of air and also doesn't end up stifling hot. Think about whether you would want to be stuffed in a bag for fourteen hours and you quickly see the need for three sides of mesh. Having a fourth side that isn't mesh is nice for camouflaging the carrier (see #5) and also makes it more stable/durable. Since pet carriers are pricy, I'd like this to be a multi-use purchase.
5. By having the mesh in a dark color and by having the carrier come in a fun purple, it looks more like a small duffle than a pet carrier. Having traveled with pets before, I have learned that it is 100 times better to have a camouflaged carrier. Why? Because amongst your fellow travelers are a species known as Idiotus Amongus: parents who let their special snowflakes poke or smack your carrier while nodding approvingly as your already worried pet is traumatized, animal-haters who spaz out at the thought of sharing airspace with anything furry and four-legged and rush up to complain (especially if they hear movement, yawning, or -- worst of all -- the light squeak of a favorite comfort toy), and boorish bozos who try to unzip the carrier to see what is inside (since curiosity is more important than etiquette or personal space) or demand that you take out your pet to show them. If people don't realize you're traveling with a pet, the whole voyage is happier.
6. Finally, I have to comment on how convenient this bag is for carrying. I love having both a shoulder strap and handles, because this gives more flexibility when you are also fighting a losing battle against two wayward suitcases and another carryon, whilst simultaneously maintaining a death grip on a passport and ticket/s.
******* Update *******
After having traveled with this carrier, I can add beyond a doubt that it was well worth every penny. It fit perfectly under my seat on both flights, and it was easy to open the top whenever I wanted to offer Daphne an ice cube, a drink of water, or little bites of my meal. This is a great little carrier!
