My husband and I recently traveled for the holidays and purchased the Sherpa Original Deluxe carrier in a medium for our dog. For reference, our dog is 11 inches in height and weighs 7 lbs. With Sherpa, there is a "Guaranteed On-Board" (GOB) with this carrier. Once you have purchased the carrier, you follow the directions included with the Sherpa's instructions. I suggest you find out if your airline is included with Sherpa's GOB before purchasing the Sherpa by going to their website www.flygob.com. Some airlines do not approve specific Sherpa carriers (some only approve the Deluxe and not the others) and some do not include all of the carrier sizes. We flew Southwest Airlines to and from our destination including the connecting flights. Southwest Airlines is apart of Sherpa's GOB; however, Southwest Airlines only approves the small Sherpa and not the medium or the large. We purchased the medium anyways so that our dog had more room. There were no issues with the size of our Sherpa (medium) and Southwest. They didn't look at it or inspect it. The middle seats on Southwest have more leg room than the aisle and window seats, which is where my husband sat with the carrier. During take off and landing, the carrier has to be under the seat, but in the air we were allowed to have the Sherpa in our lap on all flights with no issues. As far as the carrier itself, the medium was a good size for our 7 lb Papillon. He was able to lie down comfortably with the top closed and was able to stand with his head poking out. The carrier was not that heavy while walking with him in it, maybe around 10lbs. There is also a pocket that zips on the back of the Sherpa where we kept his leash, a collapsible water bowl, and some treats. Our dog also had no issues with the Sherpa, but I also prepared him by training him with the Sherpa before we traveled. I would carry him in the Sherpa around our house and reward him with treats if he went inside of it, sat in it, or would lie down in it.I have included some photos with this review for reference:Photo #1: The carrier itself, which has a faux lambskin liner.Photo #2: The rear pocket that zips, which we kept a leash, a collapsible water bowel, and a bag of treats in.Photo #3: Our dog standing in the Sherpa. Size: 15.0"L x 10.0"W x 8.5"HColor: Original PlumVerified Purchase
I have a six pound toy poodle (Daphne) who will be traveling back to America with me in a few days. Airplanes, especially internationally, are super sticklers for the size of carryon pet carriers, so it was hard finding one that was the right height. I finally ended up ordering this one and having a friend bring it from the states; this was worth every penny and all of the hassle! Initially Daphne was highly skeptical -- she barked at the carrier for a full five minutes when I tried to convince her to go inside -- but gradually she has come around to an acceptance of her little portable prison.

Why I give this five stars:
1. It is extremely convenient for transporting a pet: You have a front zippered opening through which they can climb in on their own (which makes a pet feel better about the imprisonment) and a top zipper for letting a little head poke out now and then without the "cargo" escaping (or to slip in some little treats or ice cubes now and then). The zippered compartment on the other side will make keeping Daphne's documents much handier and means I don't have to be the frazzled lady holding up a hundred people in line while I frantically empty out my entire carryon searching for mandatory papers.

2. The liner is soft, removable, and can be easily cleaned. If we have any accidents from airlines not letting her take potty breaks, that's going to be something I REALLY appreciate. Daphne likes the lining and can even be persuaded now to nap in the carrier (we've been doing daily practice for the past three weeks), which gives me hope that I will not end up with an entire airplane full of people who hate me on our departure date. Oh, and the liner fits snugly enough that, thus far, Daphne has been content to cuddle on it rather than attempt to rip it out and kill it (even the sweetest dogs get temperamental after multiple hours in a bag).

3. The size is perfect. The right height for airlines like Asiana (they seem to be the strictest on height, FYI), plus the whole caboodle will fit nicely under the seat without squishing or inconveniencing my little fur-minion.

4. Mesh on three sides, so that Daphne has plenty of air and also doesn't end up stifling hot. Think about whether you would want to be stuffed in a bag for fourteen hours and you quickly see the need for three sides of mesh. Having a fourth side that isn't mesh is nice for camouflaging the carrier (see #5) and also makes it more stable/durable. Since pet carriers are pricy, I'd like this to be a multi-use purchase.

5. By having the mesh in a dark color and by having the carrier come in a fun purple, it looks more like a small duffle than a pet carrier. Having traveled with pets before, I have learned that it is 100 times better to have a camouflaged carrier. Why? Because amongst your fellow travelers are a species known as Idiotus Amongus: parents who let their special snowflakes poke or smack your carrier while nodding approvingly as your already worried pet is traumatized, animal-haters who spaz out at the thought of sharing airspace with anything furry and four-legged and rush up to complain (especially if they hear movement, yawning, or -- worst of all -- the light squeak of a favorite comfort toy), and boorish bozos who try to unzip the carrier to see what is inside (since curiosity is more important than etiquette or personal space) or demand that you take out your pet to show them. If people don't realize you're traveling with a pet, the whole voyage is happier.

6. Finally, I have to comment on how convenient this bag is for carrying. I love having both a shoulder strap and handles, because this gives more flexibility when you are also fighting a losing battle against two wayward suitcases and another carryon, whilst simultaneously maintaining a death grip on a passport and ticket/s.

******* Update *******
After having traveled with this carrier, I can add beyond a doubt that it was well worth every penny. It fit perfectly under my seat on both flights, and it was easy to open the top whenever I wanted to offer Daphne an ice cube, a drink of water, or little bites of my meal. This is a great little carrier!

Quality of the making is generally good. Zippers don't operate as cleanly as I would have expected but functional as is the bag overall. Will be fine for my puppy Cavoodle through to 10 or 12 months for vet visits or short crate experience in transit elsewhere.
