As most everyone says, it is sturdy and works well. The company says it has been sold for over 30 years so it is a time proven product. I'm using this gate to keep two golden retrievers out of the dining area during meals. However, being a little picky, I do want to clarify some issues I have with the instructions and/or design.
It is not clear in the description that the gate must be lifted up slightly so it drops into a channel to lock it into place and must be lifted out to open it. My previous gate was a Munchkin which worked easily with one hand and latched perfectly when even kicking it shut if my hands were full. The only reason I replaced the Munchkin was because of the permanent bar on the floor, even when the gate was open, which my new Roomba couldn't climb over!
The instructions are clearly written, not a translation to English, and with good pictures. My jamb/frame has screw holes from the previous install, so I was hoping to use the same ones or cover them (yes, I'm lazy, not wanting to get out the spackling and paint). But after looking carefully at the pictures on the box and instruction book, I saw the plastic wall mounts are at different heights (by design) so I ended up with holes after all. And on the hinge side, the instructions don't allow for the gate to open and lay flat onto a baseboard (at least mine, which is at least 1/2" thick). The I had to add washers as spacers to the hardware to build it out from the wall so the gate would lay flat.
To adjust for varying jamb widths, you screw two gate pieces together which means one bar is overlapping another. No problem with that. But if you center both templates on the jambs, you end up with a gate that looks a little crooked with the threshold on the floor when looking down. The instructions could easily compensate for this. It is due to the difference of 1/2" from one overlapped bar to the other. When choosing the location of the hinge side hardware (the first ones you install), pencil in where the latch side hardware will line up to match up with its bar. It won't be centered on the jamb like the hinge. I hope I am being clear. Not compensating for this, the gate is still operational its just noticeable to someone who is picky about things being lined up (OCD??).
Again, it IS solid, and will keep babies and pets out, and looks great. I just wanted others to be aware of what I experienced.
My likes: no tension fit, no step over bar on the floor, secured to walls. This gate does take much more time to install, you need to put screws into the wall. They include a template to make mounting about as easy as they can, but it definitely takes more time to install than the tension fit gates. It’s a lot more stable, though. The 2 year old pulled a tension gate down. This one stays put. This one was a larger gate as well, our opening was the maximum width listed for other products. I was unable to use them, they wouldn’t quite span the opening. This one is wider. It works smoothly and shuts securely. One thing was that the open gate tends to swing out and come to rest partially blocking the hall. I put a “cow magnet” in a wooden block and attached that to the wall. A cow magnet is relatively large and not too strong. You do not want to use small or ultra strong magnets around children. Besides being choke hazards, 2 strong swallowed magnets can stick together inside a child pinching intestine. The strong magnets pinch off the blood supply to the trapped tissue and the pinched then perforates requiring emergent life saving surgery. The cow magnet is too big to swallow and it is strong enough to secure the gate open without exposing the child to the hazards of the strong magnets. Cow magnets are used for cattle, they sit in the stomach and then trap bits of swallowed iron/steel such as staples and nails.
