Product Description

For over 30 years, Furman has pioneered the development of AC power products for the most demanding audio, video, and broadcast professionals. Furman's Series Multi-Stage Protection (SMP) delivers the purest AC power and the most comprehensive protection available - going far beyond what is found in traditional surge strips. With Furman's Power Station Series, everyone can reap the benefits of unrivaled power purification and unequalled surge protection. The PST-8 all feature Furman's SMP circuit which incorporates Linear Filtering Technology (Lift) and a high current TVZ-MOV to insure that any electronic device (including televisions, projectors, CD-DVD players, or computers) is fed clean, filtered AC power. This dramatically reduces noise, ensuring consistent peak performance from your equipment. Typical AC filters feature antiquated non-linear circuits. Though these multiple stage filters or power cleaners reduce some noise, they do so unevenly. In fact, they can add noise to your power line due to their filter's excessive resonant peaking. With Furman's proprietary Linear Filtering Technology (Lift), AC noise is suppressed evenly, assuring maximum performance from your system. Furman's SMP circuit offers the highest degree of protection available without sacrificing itself or any of its components. Another feature that is unique to Furman's SMP circuit is automatic extreme-voltage shutdown. Extreme voltages are statistically the most common, damaging AC event. The Extreme Voltage Shutdown circuit automatically turns off the unit when it is fed 137 volts or higher protecting itself and connected equipment from the extreme voltage. Only Furman offers this degree of protection! Add Telco and cable /satellite transient voltage suppression, and you have what is, unquestionably, the most comprehensive protection available in a portable AC power conditioner.

Furman Power Conditioner PST-8

Furman’s Series Multi-Stage Protection (SMP) delivers the purest AC power and the most comprehensive protection available, going far beyond what is found in traditional surge strips. With Furman’s Power Station Series, everyone can reap the benefits of unrivaled power purification and unequalled surge protection.

For over 40 years, Furman has pioneered the development of AC power products for the most demanding audio, video, and broadcast professionals.

Today’s overworked, outdated power grid delivers poor quality AC power. When connecting sensitive equipment to regular power outlets, AC noise masks and distorts critical signal information which cripples performance. This is why it’s more important that ever to purify or clean the AC powering your sensitive audio/video equipment.

The PST-8 all feature Furman’s SMP circuit which incorporates Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT) and a high current TVZ-MOV to insure that any electronic device (including televisions, projectors, CD-DVD players, or computers) is fed clean, filtered AC power. This dramatically reduces noise, ensuring consistent peak performance from your equipment.

Typical AC filters feature antiquated non-linear circuits. Though these multiple stage filters or power cleaners reduce some noise, they do so unevenly. In fact, they can add noise to your power line due to their filter’s excessive resonant peaking. With Furman’s proprietary Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT), AC noise is suppressed evenly, assuring maximum performance from your system.

Most people know that they should have surge protectors to protect their electronics (TV, home theater, computer) from surges that occur when the power comes back on after a blackout or from lightning strikes and other incidents that cause unwanted bursts of voltage. They usually buy an inexpensive unit for $25 or so, plug their stuff into it, and forget about it.

The problem is, these inexpensive surge protectors "sacrifice" their electronics with every surge. One big surge can render them useless; many small surges over a period of time can do the same. Once those sacrificial bits are killed, the unit becomes a simple power strip with no protective ability.

Manufacturers recommend replacing surge protectors after any big power event or every two years, which most people-by which I mean ME-don't do.

The Furman units like this one absorb surges without sacrificing the electronics, making them a good choice for people like me who want to plug it in and not think about it anymore. It's three or four times more expensive up front, but it should pay for itself over time, especially if it saves my equipment.

Then there's the power conditioning aspect. I read opinions about power conditioners varying from how essential it is to clean up the power from your outlet to opinions that conditioners are a waste of money. Some people say it depends on how dirty your power is, that dirty power can result in speaker hiss, and that cleaning up the power can give speakers more clarity and extend the life of your receiver. I don't know who to believe.

I have no idea how you're supposed to know how dirty your power is, but I do know that I can walk around my neighborhood and hear the power lines crackling overhead, so I figure it's pretty messed up. I'm happy to have power conditioning built into my surge protector. Can't hurt.

Other reviews talk about how BIG this unit is. In some photos it looks as big as a coffee table! It's big compared to cheap surge protectors but it still fits handily under my TV shelf and under my desk. I don't find the size to be a problem at all, and I appreciate the heft of this aluminum-clad unit.

Is it working? Heck if I know. I guess I'll find out sooner or later, but for now I'm betting on Furman's reputation and doing what I do best with surge protectors-I'm forgetting about it.

If you are purchasing this unit for surge protection for valuable electronics gear. You've made the right decision. I am an experienced electronics engineer and the approach Furman has taken is the best I've seen. Yes, it is expensive and rather bulky, but the build quality is superb and the massive inductor and support electronics simply couldn't fit in a much smaller enclosure. Frankly, I think most people will find little advantage to the linear filtering from an audio line noise perspective, especially with modern gear. That said, buy this thing if, as I have, you've spent a ridiculous amount of money on home theatre gear and don't want the next lightning strike or line-cross to cost you big bucks. I live in a rural area, and power distribution here is a bit on the fingers-crossed side, especially during thunderstorm season and I've experienced some long-term overvoltage issues from crossed lines twice. Fortunately only a clothes dryer motor and some light bulbs were fried by those events, but now that I have finished moving in and installed a ton of expensive gear, I am more comfortable having this unit's auto shutdown on overvoltage protectiion for my stupidly expensive AVR and OLED TV. This is something only a few other high end surge protectors offer. This thing wasn't cheap to build, so the price is quite reasonable. Just buy it.

I rarely leave reviews, but this time I had to say something about this surge protector. It is definitely more than just a surge protctor! I had no idea it would improve my Audio signal this much. I'm using it with an audio interface and Windows PC. The sound was noticeably cleaner and clearer. I was using a basic surge protector, but trust me, this one is worth the extra money spent!

Easy setup, plugged it in and it's working without issue. I'm concerned about it's integrity though especially due to the nightmare of packaging it came in. The outside box was completely beat up to the point it couldn't be stacked, and twisted in strange ways, making it look like there was no way the item inside was intact. Opening this box revealed that the plastic casing on the product packaging was busted through, and the power conditioner inside was exposed.

Despite this, I examined the power conditioner and found no signs of damage or scratches whatsoever. No rattle shaking it or anything. Plugged it in and it works perfectly. So, while the packaging was horrible, the fact this device survived it somehow really shows it's good build quality, and makes my confident it won't break easily down the line.

I have owned two of these Furman surge protectors. The first one failed in 2022 after 30 months of use. I replaced it with a second in october 2022, and now that one has failed. Perhaps there was a power surge. Or perhaps the device just wears out. Either way, it is an expensive and major hassle. I have had a Tripp Lite ISOBAR4ULTRA Isobar 4 Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip over the same time period and it has never failed. I am replacing the Furman with this Tripp model which, fortunately, is still available on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Audio Conditioning For Analog Music Studios
Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2022
I am a career music producer and I use a lot of analog equipment in my studio. For whatever reason I have never used a power conditioner. I admit that there was often an annoying buzz in my mixer signal but I chalked it up to it being a piece of true analog equipment and that that buzz was just a part of its operation. And usually the music was enough to mask it. But very recently I moved and had to set up my studio in a new country. After a month of setting it up, I was finally back to work and mixing a project on my Thermionic Culture Fat Bustard 2 when I heard a sound in the signal that sounded like a distant power saw. (That is in addition to the low buzz I was used to.) So, I took my headphones off and sat quietly. Sure enough I could hear someone using a table saw. With one ear in a headphone and the other listening I could confirm that whenever the saw was active it penetrated my audio signal with high frequency buzzing. This was just the beginning. When the sawing finished I heard a new sound. A rhythmic hum/click/buzz that went for about 2 seconds every 5 seconds... The source... my own washing machine. Immediately I went on the search for a power conditioner. I settled on the Furman PST-8 because it was the lowest priced one with Furman's "LiST" technology. I was incredibly nervous setting it up, expecting the hum to still be there. I was wrong. I've never heard my $7000 mixer sound so pristine. The buzz was gone entirely, leaving just the very low level floor noise that all analog gear has. I am kicking myself that I never got this years or even decades ago. If you use analog music gear, you need this to get the most out of all that expensive goodness. And I tested with power tools and the washing machine. The interference is gone and my signal is cleaner than ever before.

Highly recommended.

P.S. I see some reviews complaining that it doesn't work for them but in those reviews it seems their power is not what their problem is. I can say that this cleans up AC power exceptionally well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade for Audiophiles on a budget
Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2021
I bought this for the security offered to my pretty darned good audiophile components. Ideally, I would make major electrical changes to my home but not all of us are able to do the electrical modifications that a high end specialty store would recommend. So this unit has provided both security and power conditioning at an affordable price. Can I hear the difference? I think so - can I prove it? Not easily because doing a side by side comparison is difficult. I actually bought 2 of these units - one reserved for my high end receiver and another for the rest of my components because ideally, the receiver would have its own electrical connection at the box but to me, this is the next best thing. And also I do believe in the quality of this product so that's enough for me. They say that you pay your money and you take your chances but with this product, I feel confident and that I am not taking any chances while also get a better degree of electrical conditioning without breaking the bank. My highest recommendation for audiophiles on a budget!
