    Caution cosleepers!

    Caution cosleepers!
Update July 2018:So a couple years, a cross country and conversion kit later, this was an awesome investment for us. The issues we had with it for cosleeping aside, we've been pretty happy with our purchase. It was a task (but not too bad of one) to disassemble, but it made the long move with us and nothing broken and was left in the closet for the time being. We never converted it to a toddler bed, instead opting for the full size mattress as we had several houseguests coming in the next six months and wanted a bed for them to stay in because our son still slept with us. My MIL ordered the conversion kit for my Christmas gift and we ordered a box spring and mattress off Amazon. This bed system WILL NEED either a box spring or you will need to put wooden slates to support your mattress once you convert it. It looks BEAUTIFUL and I'm so happy we have this for our son! Now he and I sleep in at as I am getting him used to his own bed, but honestly none of our guests had any idea this was ever even a crib until we told them! I also snagged a bumper for my son so when he's eventually on his own he won't roll off the high side of the bed, but at almost three years old he loves his "dino bed" and can climb up easily. Definitely recommend! We purchased this crib in honey oak for our 10.5 month old, who we have been cosleeping and bedsharing with since he was born. We wanted to use this furniture primarily for cosleeping arrangements so I can get more rest and the toddler bed later on (it does come with the toddler rail). I didn't find many reviews discussing using this as a sidecar cosleeper, and since the ones I did find sounded positive and I like how "green" the crib is, we ordered this. The box came on time and had a corner missing, but the crib is packed well so it had no damage fron the shipment. It took DH a few hours by himself to assemble, and although the instructions are lacking somewhat, it was pretty straighforward. It does scratch easily. Like, my fingernail flicked it and it left a mark on the finish that's noticible even with this lighter color crib. The stickers are also annoying to peel off, I suggest some Goo Gone since the finish is so soft you'd probably damage it with scrubbing it off without any helper. The wood being soft however is also what keeps the crib from being heavy, and as such, it's easy to move around because it feels lightweight. It does look great and feels very strong and solid, despite the finish being soft. It looks way more expensive than it really is. My son had a blast pulling on the rails and jumping/rolling/flinging himself around on the rails and bars, and it didn't budge at all, so it seems fairly sturdy. All that goodness aside, it's not a great choice for sidecaring, and here's why:Simply put, you can see from the 1st photo, that because the front rails are curved, and the crib feet are bowed outward somewhat, it cannot lay flush up against a mattress because the legs aren't straight. There is about a 4" gap between our bed and the crib (3rd photo), when the crib is pushed all the way up next to our mattress. Since our son is almost a year old, our solution was to push the crib mattress up against our mattress (2nd photo) and filling in the gap between the crib mattress and crib railing on the other side with a thick blanket that's level with the crib mattess. I am aware this is advised against for SID'S concerns, but since our son is older and since I intimately know his sleeping habits having slept next to him for almost a year, I feel comfortable that this is a safe solution for us. The mattress I chose to go with his crib is a very high quality and dense/firm mattress, so when applying pressure to the crib mattress that's unsupported for a few inches next to our mattress, there is no give. I can't say if we had a cheaper more flimsy $50 mattress I could say the same. The height of the crib with the crib mattress is pretty much perfect though. Our mattress is 19" tall from the floor up, and with the crib mattress laying on top of the wire support's highest setting, they are level with one another. There are 3 lower settings that we can adjust to if needed, but this fits to our bed's height perfectly.Overall, I'd say yes, it's a soft wooded crib that won't be heirloom due to scratches, dents and bite marks. However, for the price and inclusion of a toddler rail, it's quite beautiful and not too high profile like I've seen some other cribs (we have a small bedroom in a tiny house, so size was a consideration). We have to disassemble it in a year when we move, and it seems like it would be a fairly simple process to do that so we aren't too worried about moving it. Eventually we can buy the conversion kit and it'll make a nice looking bed then too with a gorgeous honey oak color. Overall we are pretty pleased, but the softness/durability concern is what took off a star in this review.

We purchased this crib in 2010 for the birth of our second son. We already had the same crib for our oldest son and it had lasted almost 2 years so we were confident in our purchase. Now, 4 1/2 years after we purchased our first DaVinci Kalani crib, our 2 year old is still using his and it has held up beautifully to his playing, jumping and climbing. The one we bought over 4 years ago is now being used by our 1 year old son and is in amazing shape considering it's been used nearly nonstop since 2008. There are dings and scratches due to the soft wood, but at this price range it's expected and easily repaired. And none are distinct enough unless you really pay attention to the details. We didn't have any issues with assembly, although the directions were missing. We found them online at the manufacturers website so it wasn't a concern. In fact, both cribs were assembled by me, while in my 3rd trimester. The only issue we have had is the bolts that hold the mattress support tend to wear after repetitive use. We replaced them after a quick trip to the hardware store (as easy as bringing one in and saying "I need 4 of these") and that was after 2 years of use. I would definitely recommend this crib to new parents. It has a beautiful, classy look, is easy to assemble, and will give you your money's worth. We have 3 wild, busy boys and both of our Kalani's are investments that lasted far longer than we anticipated. Congratulations to all in the market to buy!

We got this crib for our first child due in November. So far I could not be happier.

    - It is beautiful: The color is exactly the same as it is in the pictures and has very nice detailing. Simply gorgeous!
    - Very sturdy: We looked at cribs similar in price at many different stores, as well as cribs much more expensive. We decided on this crib because of the positive reviews and the fact that it was made of solid, sustainably harvested wood. Dollar for dollar, it is on par with cribs we were looking at that were double the price.
    - Great value: As I said, we were prepared to pay nearly $400 for a crib since all of the ones we looked at for less looked and felt so cheaply made. This crib truly seems like it is sturdy enough to withstand the test of time. Also, this particular bed came with the Toddler Rail included, which can/will save you nearly $100 when your little one out grows his or her baby bed.
    - Longevity: Besides the fact that you could use this as a baby crib, toddler bed, day bed and full-size bed, it also has 4 adjustable settings for the height of the crib mattress. This is very convenient for those of us with short little t-rex arms like me.
    - Easy to put together: From opening the box to completely assembled, it took my husband about an hour and a half to complete. In comparison to our changing table, putting the crib together was a breeze. The instructions were clear and there were no missing or misaligned holes. He did use a power drill to help screw things in faster, which was a huge help, but not necessary.

One thing that we didn't account for: we didn't measure the hallway or nursery door when we spread out all the parts and built it in the living room. After the fact we realized that it wouldn't fit. So to get it in baby's room we'll have to take it 100% apart and put it back together again. Thankfully, that won't be so terribly painful.

    Highly recommended!

Very nice and sturdy crib but pretty complicated to put together
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024

Purchased this as a gift for my first grandchild. I will admit I was a bit concerned about ordering a crib off of Amazon, but this turned out to be very nice! It looks and feels good quality.

We did have a bit of a problem putting it together... it was a combination of poorly written directions thus not being able to follow them very well and having to go back and take things apart and redoing. Be very careful to use the correct size screw and that you have all pieces facing the correct way. Honestly, that sounds pretty evident but because of poor directions and lack of markings on some pieces, it was harder than you would think.

Still giving it a 5 because once put together correctly, it is a very nice crib.

Update 1/25/15: After having the crib for a year, we still like it but don't love it. The finish on the crib comes off really easily and it dents super easy. My son was teething and now we have several lighter spots along the edge of the crib.

We bought this crib in the cherry color and it is absolutely stunning and sturdy. We have a mix of woods in our son's room and the cherry looks great with them all.
    Pros:
    -Beautiful color
-easy to assemble (just make sure you read the instructions carefully and lay out all the materials)
-sturdy (our son is only 6 mo old so we haven't seen its durability to him jumping...yet...but it seems very secure)
-mattress fits great (ordered the Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams White Crib Mattress)
-I was concerned that I would not be able to easily lay my sleeping baby in the crib because of the height if the sides since I'm only 5' 1". I've had no issues and neither have taller people in our family

    Cons:
-it's made out of a softer wood that does scratch and dent fairly easy. We've had it 9 mo and it has at least 10 or more scratches/dents and we're pretty careful. One caution I have is that you run your hands over all the surfaces before you put your child in it. I got a sliver from the front railing. Had the wood seemed like it would splinter more I would have called the manufacturer or returned it, but we've had no additional issues.
-since the railings are like a sleigh you can't attach crib soothers over the front or back railings with the holder they come with. However, we found that we could attach our crib soother by zip tying cloth dog collars to the soother and tighten the collars around the sleigh edge. Just make sure the clips to the collars done press into the wood or are accessible to baby

This is a nice solid crib made of sturdy wood for a decent price. It took two of us about half a hour to put together. I would recommend this crib to others

Muy bonita y práctica. Para hacerla colecho tienes que comprar aditamentos especiales, mi esposo tardó mucho en armarla pero si vale la pena
