Great if you get flange adapters
    5 out of 5 stars
Great if you get flange adapters
Background: I originally wanted to give this pump a 3-star rating but, given a recent discovery, I am giving it a 5-star rating. I pumped exclusively with my son due to latch issues and used a rental Symphony for him. With my second child, I had high hopes that I'd only have to pump for sitters and daycare, so I researched personal use pumps and bit the bullet and bought this pump based on the high reviews. Sadly (and I knew this when I bought it), none of my Symphony parts, Medela collection bottles, or Dr. Brown's bottles could be used without either hacking this pump (which I tried and failed at) or buying an overpriced bottle adapter. After my second child was born, I ended up pumping more than anticipated for the first few weeks due to a not then diagnosed tongue tie (now blessedly fixed), and decided to at least rent a Symphony while on maternity leave so I could use all my flanges (less frequent dish washing with a newborn is key to my sanity) and pump directly into my Dr. Browns bottles without having to also clean the huge bottle adapters sold by Spectra. When the Symphony was more uncomfortable than I remembered, I sought lactation support and learned that I needed smaller flanges for at least one side. So I ordered a set of Maymom Medela 21mm flanges and a set of Maymom S1 21mm flanges.Lo and behold, Maymom has a tiny adapter that comes with its 21mm Spectra flanges that allows me to use any Medela flange with my Spectra pump (pictures attached). This is a much cheaper and easier alternative than ordering a bunch of Spectra narrow-neck bottle adapters as it makes all my Symphony and Spectra flanges interchangeable and this part is easily cleaned with my Dr. Brown's tiny bottle brush. Basically, I can have half the crap and clutter with this one tiny yellow adapter. And, bonus, the Maymom flange is so inexpensive that even if you don't need a smaller flange, you don't have to feel too guilty ordering it just for the adapter. (I've also emailed Maymom to ask if they'd be willing to sell the adapters separately from the flanges, so we'll see.)Pros: Overall, the S1 is equally adept as the Symphony at draining my milk, has a great battery life (hello doing dishes while pumping!), is incredibly quite and light, and is much more gentle than the Symphony. Though the S1 takes me about 2-3 more minutes to get the same amount of milk as the Symphony, it is so much more comfortable that I use it exclusively at work (using the Symphony only for extra pumping at home and even then only until my current lease term runs out).Cons: The only major complaints I have about the S1 are that I hate the wide neck flanges, that the bottles that come with it are terrible (seriously, the ounce markings wore off after 1 run through the dishwasher and seemed to not be accurate), and that any spare parts and adapters have to be ordered online, sometimes from specialty retailers.Summary: Save yourself from the cons of the S1 and all the problems people have with the PISA and buy this pump and a set of Maymom flanges (for the adapters).

Buy this pump. Seriously, stop looking, buy it. This review is long but will hopefully answer any questions you have. Or post one and I'll try to answer it.

Earlier this year I had twins born at 34 weeks. They were doing well, but did spend some time in the NICU. When babies are in the NICU, you become super obsessed with how much milk they are getting. They can't go home until they take their "minimums" and gain weight. As a result, I've pretty much been exclusively pumping since they were born. My girl would latch, but I couldn't tell how much she was getting and she would get tired after a few minutes and wouldn't take the rest of her bottle. My boy had breathing problems at first and was being fed with a tube for the first 10 days. After that he had to learn how to eat and would get tired, so I didn't try to nurse him. Since I had to feed two and wanted to share my supply, pumping was the way to go.

Since I had preemies, my insurance paid for me to use a Medela Lactina pump. This is the big blue thing that is "hospital grade" and retails for a boatload ($1500 for the love!). I used the Lactina for the first two months but wanted something more portable (I bought a car adapter so I could plug it in and pump in the car on long days out). And, the Lactina is loud as all get out, which was annoying and I actually covered it with a blanket to muffle the sound so I could pump in the same room my husband and 3 year old daughter were watching TV in so I could be part of the family. I contemplated getting a Medela Freestyle, but read mixed reviews about being able to maintain supply. Having twins I did not want to risk my supply going down.

I took a leap of faith and bought this pump using gift cards for about half the cost. I figured if it didn't work at least I wasn't out all the money. Best. Decision. Ever.

    Awesomeness:
-It is SUPER quiet compared to the Lactina. I have no idea how it compares to other pumps, but it is going to be nice to have at work and be able to answer the phone while pumping.
-It is pretty portable. I wanted something I could clip to my belt and walk around the house, but that is the Freestyle and I couldn't risk it. This is pretty lightweight, and I'm actually contemplating putting a ribbon through the handle and putting it over my neck. It never fails that when I'm pumping my husband is out of the house and my older daughter needs something. At the very least, I've put it on with my hands-free pumping bra (Simple Wishes brand- buy that too) and been able to put it on the kitchen counter to make bottles or lunch or whatever. Haven't tried cooking dinner yet, but that may happen.
-Nightlight is pretty neat, and has two levels.
-Timer is a cool feature. Most folks don't need to pump for more than 15-20 minutes, but most folks don't have twins. The timer shuts the pump off after 30 minutes which is how long I pump for. I used to set a timer on my phone, but don't need to do that so much anymore.
-Massage feature is pretty nifty. This pump almost pulses when creating suction. It was kind of weird at first since the other pump didn't do it, but it actually makes pumping pretty comfortable. The "massage" feature speeds up the pump and is designed to stimulate letdown. Once you have letdown, you are supposed to turn off the massage feature. (I don't, I like the fastest speed for my pumping. But again, twins.)
-Memory feature- the pump remembers what your last "normal" and "massage" settings were and goes back to them.
-Vacuum control- I use the pump on either level 2 or 3. It has 12 levels. Wow. As a nurse I'm really wondering who would need level 12. Maybe for someone with inverted nipples. Maybe if the battery ever gets weak I'll need to go up.

    Quirks:
-It took a LONG time (probably 12 hours) to fully charge the battery when I first got the pump. It also says it can run plugged in, which is true, but so far as I can tell actually uses the battery regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. I could be wrong.
-If you use the nightlight feature while pumping it will drain your battery faster, and you will likely not get a full three hours of pump time. Probably not a problem for most people but worth noting.
-The bottles and pump kit are pretty cheap. That would probably be my biggest gripe about the whole thing. If we are spending this much money on a pump, the kit should be stellar. (Most pump kits are pretty terrible, so this is about par for the course.) But all is not lost. The ends of the tubing actually fit into my kit I had been using with my Medela. Also, and this is a problem with most pump kits, most women would need to lean forward to get the milk to drop down when sitting upright. So, my Lactina kit had removable flanges which I promptly tossed and used the angled ones from Pumpin' Pal. (Buy those too.) Also, I bought a pump adapter kit that worked with the Playtex bottles I was using so I could pump directly into the drop-in liners. (Cleaner that way, eventually the bottles will get gross no matter what you do.)
-If you are not using their backflow valves, you need to pay attention to your tubing. I am not, and have gotten some moisture into one of the tubes on the end. I just blow it out with a hair dryer in a couple of seconds. The tubing is nothing special and you could easily replace it with something from the hardware store if you needed to. It would also be pretty easy to jerryrig the tubing from another pump kit, which I may do so I can attach the backflow valves.

The "cons" I listed here may seem like a lot, but to me it wasn't enough that I would take away a star. I've had it for two weeks and I love it, and haven't noticed a drop in supply. I'll update this review if anything changes, but I don't see that happening.

So go buy this pump. Or put it on your registry or wishlist. You won't be sorry.

Updated 10/16/13 -A couple more product links for all the parts I'm using with my cobbled-together homemade kit. You really don't NEED anything but the angled flanges and hands-free pumping bra, but if you wanted to piece something together that's a bit more user-friendly, here are the links:

UPDATE 10/28/13- I've gone back to work and am taking this pump back and forth. I just put it in a small tote bag I had at home. I made two pump kits so I can leave one at home and one in my office at work and all I take back and forth is the pump. That probably wasn't necessary, but I probably would have ended up forgetting something one day so this was my way to make sure that didn't happen. Pump is awesome, and nobody can hear it when I answer the phone. The doctor in the office next to me is pumping as well, and you can hear her pump down the hall...
-Also, I finally attached the backflow valves. I basically just cut the tubing and attached one piece to either side of the valve. It's a small challenge to get the tubing on the large side, but it does fit. Now I can still stick the end of the tubing into my homemade Medela kit and it works great and I don't need to worry about moisture getting into my pump.

If you've got questions, post 'em and I'll do my best to answer! (I should probably just make a video...)

Update: I bought a second one after having my third child. My first two days back at work I pumped 12 oz and 15 oz. The baby only needs 9-10 oz while I'm gone. This pump is the best. I know my review is super long but the short version is you will not find a better pump. It is effective, gentle, and what more could you want? The price has even gone down since I bought the first one.

I bought a second because all pumps eventually lose suction. I think I paid about $130 for my second one. I'll use it for a year, so that's a little over $10 a month. Well worth it.

    ------

This pump is amazing. When it comes to something that you're probably going to be using several times a day, almost every day, for about a year or so, you want to like it. The best you can hope for is a love-hate relationship with the pump, because you'd probably rather just be nursing the baby, but at least you can still pump and that's the next best thing. So, you want one that won't make you hate the entire process even more, right?

I pumped with my first, who is now 2.5 years old, from day 2 until he was 1 year old. I just had my second baby (1 month now) and have used this pump 4 times so far, 3 times as single, once as a double. As with my first, I plan to return to work at 12 weeks and will be pumping until she is 1 year old as well.

I love this pump. With my first baby I used a Medela single electric, then got a Hygeia double electric. Honestly, I hated them both. The suction had to be super high, and the flanges that came with them were not big enough for me, so I had to spend more money on new flanges. The flanges that came with the Spectra are larger than the default Medela ones, and are comfortable for me. I was using the XL Medela ones before. These are slightly smaller than those.

The Hygeia would constantly lose suction and I had to replace tubes and valves every week or so, and keep increasing the suction. By the end of the year, my nipples had basically lost all feeling, except when I was pumping and they hurt. I also had to pump longer and longer, so I was spending 3 sessions of 1 hour each pumping at work, to get the same amount. So, 1 hour to get about 3-4 oz.

With the Spectra, under the same conditions, I can pump 6 oz in 10 minutes, with very low suction. The mechanics of this pump are just so much more effective. The letdown cycle actually works for me. With the Hygeia I would try to change the settings to get a letdown, and it would still take 10 min before it happened. With the Spectra, it's usually less than one minute. Reducing the pumping time to only 10-15 minutes is not only more convenient and comfortable, it makes it much easier to pump at work, and it's much healthier. When you pump for more than 20-30 minutes at a time without a break, it can actually damage your nipples and breast tissue. So an effective pump is not only easier to use, it's better for you in the long run.

I did notice I had to increase the suction when I plugged in the second tubing to use it as a double, so I went from using suction levels 2 & 3 to using 4 & 5. I did not increase the cycle. The vacuum goes up to Level 12, so if the pump does lose suction over the year like my Hygeia did, it looks like there is plenty of power to take up the slack.

Someone in another review said they don't know what the "cycle" numbers mean. When a baby is suckling, they typically suck between 60-80 times per minute to get a let down, then between 40-60 times per minute when drinking the milk. The numbers on the cycle setting reflect that. The letdown cycle is 70, meaning in one minute it will "suck" 70 times. Then you can pick from a wide range for your regular pumping. If your baby sucks faster, your body will probably respond better to a higher number. I personally have been pumping on the lowest cycle for comfort, and it seems to draw out more milk for me.

I love that the pump remembers which settings you had it on. The only flaw with this is that no matter which setting it was on (regular or let-down cycles) when you turned it off, it turns on in regular mode. I would much prefer it turned on in let-down mode, since what I do is get the flanges positioned in my hands free bra, then turn the pump on with it already attached to me. I have to hit power then quickly hit the let down cycle button to switch it to what I need. Just a slight inconvenience. Since there's no way to adjust the vacuum or cycles while it's off, if you find yourself using the higher levels of suction you definitely want to turn it on and check what settings it's on BEFORE you put your nipple in the flange.

I also wish you could see the battery indicator without having to turn it on. Basically, it needs an option to interact with the LCD screen without actually turning on the pump/suction part. A way to view and change your settings before actually starting trying to pump.

The only other thing I dislike so far is the timer - I actually love the timer, but there's no "pause" button. So when I was using only one flange and pumped one side, then wanted to switch to the other side, I had to turn it off to do my switch, then when I turned it back on the timer started over. I appreciated being able to see the time, but it goes away as soon as you turn the pump off. Again, a way to keep the screen and settings on, but PAUSE the suction would be a huge help.

These two tiny flaws are barely noticeable though when it comes to comparing this to any other pump on the market. The battery and handle are so nice, my old pump had to be plugged in. I have already once had to pick up the pump and go into another room to help my toddler with something, and it was so nice to not have to unhook everything to change rooms. I hear lots of stories of moms pumping in awkward spots because it's the only place with an outlet, so I look forward to NOT having to deal with that.

The "instruction" manual that comes with it is a joke, so if you're a first time pumper, go online and learn how pumps work and how to care for them, what the basic parts are, so you know what to do with the pump.

    _________

My baby is turning 6 months in a few days and I'm still pumping for her at work, every day. I still love this pump. I have not had to change the suction settings, so it's still working great there. I *think* the pump is a little louder than it used to be, or it could just be that I am used to the noise it makes. It's still very quiet, but it does sort of sound like something is rumbling a little in there. I do take it a lot of places and it could be a little beaten up by now.

The battery still lasts a long time, I charge it once every 2-3 days. I never use the light. I still wish it had a pause button. I have not had to replace any valves or tubing.

Things I don't like after 6 months: I ordered the tote bag and cooler bag from Spectra, and the pump and cooler bag do not both fit in the tote bag easily! I can make them fit but it's very difficult. Plus, the cooler then has to sit on the pump and occasionally it turns the pump on! I was expecting to get a tote bag that was designed to hold these items, but it's just a generic bag. No pockets or dividers inside, just one little pocket on the outside (which I do use for my wallet).

But the pump? still amazing. I tell everyone I can about this pump. Worth every penny and more.

I have a seven week old baby and breastfeeding/pumping has felt like such a struggle until yesterday when this pump arrived. I have used baby buddha medela etc and yesterday AM I got a sad 40 ml with my baby buddha. It felt like a major accomplishment if I got almost two ounces sometimes when my supply was highest. When my spectra arrived yesterday it felt like my last hope to be able to pump and have some freedom. Every time I have pumped with this I have gotten 4-5 ounces and it is SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. I only wish I had gotten this sooner and not wasted my time and insurance on the baby buddha. couldn’t recommend it more. Also my lactation consultant recommended this to me last week after watching my baby buddha in action.

I’ve been thinking about getting the spectra for a few weeks as I am exclusively pumping and I’ve been using my manual medela so far and some cheap wearables. The wearables left my nipples damaged and didn’t empty me, broke down after just a few days as well so I got the spectra. I should’ve got the spectra a lot sooner as it does not hurt at all while pumping and i literally went from getting 120ml with my wearables and manual to 170ml with my spectra!!! Highly recommend

I would not recommend buying this item outside of the US. My son was only born in January and the pump only lasted for 4 weeks of only light usage before the motor stopped working. I was refused a return as it had been over 30 days since I purchased it (I bought it before my son was born to be prepared). The seller told me to contact the manufacturer but when I asked for details they said they ‘couldn’t find them’. When I contacted the manufacturer myself by looking on google they said warranty is only covered for US. So I was left as a new mother of a young baby out of pocket and without a pump that I needed (as my baby had not been gaining enough weight and I had to supplement the feeds). I am shocked at the customer service as no help at all was given even though it broke within such a short time, and they couldn’t even tell me warranty details, just a ‘tough luck’ basically. To spend this amount of money for something that only lasts 4 weeks and then be left in the lurch without a replacement for something you urgently need is very disappointing. Don’t waste your money.
