Product Description
The hobby of amateur astronomy frequently takes the observer away from sources of AC power. After all, we are always in pursuit of the darkest skies possible, and that often means going off the grid. The most common way to power your telescope in these situations is to use a portable 12V battery pack, like the Celestron PowerTank, or to use power from your car’s battery via the cigarette lighter. The Celestron Car Battery Adapter is the accessory required for connecting any Celestron computerized telescope to a DC power supply or car battery. Plug the round post into the 12V input jack on the drive base of your telescope, and insert the power connector into the cigarette lighter outlet in your car or on your power supply. The cord is 25 feet long, giving you plenty of reach between your telescope and 12V power source. The barrel connector can be sued with any telescope that uses a receptacle with an outside diameter of 5.5 mm and an inner diameter of 2.1 mm and a “tip positive” polarity. For use with the following telescopes: NexStar SLT Series NexStar GT Series CGEM Series CPC Series CPC Deluxe Series Advanced VX Series

Sadly, while it "fits", the NexStar's Jack is not the correct mate to this plug, and it fails to engage the "Lock" - which is the main feature this cable promises. The lock is needed on the NexStar otherwise power will drop out intermittently as the telescope moves in RA.
It was necessary to replace the power jack in the NexStar, with a longer (deeper) variation before the lock engages. Once done, it's beautiful, and power is steady under all conditions with this cable.
I'm happy to have done this, and rate the purchase highly - but it wouldn't be fair to do so without setting expectations a bit. Now you know -
I am using this with a JNC300XL external jump-start battery and very happy with that setup. The Celestron powertank looks like a fine product, though it strikes me as possibly overpriced. The JNC300XL + this cable is a bit more expensive, but I find that external, portable jump-start battery (or a similar one) a more flexible option for jump-starting a car and I was pleased to learn that it has a cigarette lighter behind its bulb.
I suspect this cable should be compatible with just about any external battery that has a 12v accessory power hookup, but it's working great with my battery for my Celestron Nextstar 6SE.
This new cable is made a bit differently, so I won't know if it's better or worse until it's been through a couple of temperature extremes. One difference is the type of cable used. The new one uses something similar to zip cord or speaker wire, while the original had both conductors enclosed in a round outer jacket that was softer and more flexible. The new DC plug is a straight type, rather than the right-angle plug on the original, which I liked. However, the new plug seems beefier and appears to have a much better strain-relief, so we'll see how well it holds up. The cigarette lighter plug is identical on both cables, except the new one lacks the original's red LED power indicator. Unlike the molded plug on the other end, this one can be easily removed & replaced, so I might swap them. I'll plan on updating this review after the new cable completes its first winter of use.
UPDATE (Feb 2015): I'm a bit late with this follow-up, but happy to report that after 5-1/2 years of regular use, this cable is still good-as-new. Just like the original cable that came with the scope, I keep this one wrapped on a Cordpro Mini Cord Organizer . This ensures it never gets tangled or dragged on the pavement. I also continue to loop it thru the scope's fork handle in a loose knot to provide extra strain relief in case the anti-cordwrap goes awry (or I forget to turn it on).
It must be noted that Celestron may be using a different supplier for this cable than for the one I purchased several years ago, so your mileage may vary. As Patrick Niemeyer mentioned in his comment below, the cable currently being offered does, in fact feature an LED indicator on the cigarette lighter end. The photo also shows a knurled locknut on the scope end, which my cable does not have. The locknut would not do anything for me, since the 12V jack on my CPC does not have any exposed threads and I'm not inclined to take the scope apart just to remount the jack. Still, if the new version of this cable proves as durable as mine, it would certainly be worth five stars. The price has also dropped several dollars since I bought mine.
My problem with this is the input to the Nexstar SLT mount is evidently not regulated, so if your vehicle puts out 13 VDC or more momentarily, you can damage your motor control board in the telescope mount. I was using a Nexstar SLT mount. Celestron should only sell something that would not allow damage from a 1 volt over nominal spike if the mount will not handle any voltage variances. Now I'm sending my mount back for repair, even though I used a Celestron accessory. :-( Hopefully they cover the repair, just be careful on what you plug this into.
