I got this on prime day for $29 and still feel like I paid more than it’s worth. It’s not dim by any means, and I do like how compact and lightweight it is. But for those people out there who are saying it’s some blow-your-mind, blinding flashlight where you can see for hundreds of yards… That simply isn’t true. It’s brighter than you'd expect for a flashlight it's size and weight. I like the fact that you can recharge the battery, but I hate the fact that you need to pull the flashlight apart to do it. It might throw light 100 feet, but only completely illuminates things maybe 35 feet in front of you. As far as the area directly in your orbit, it is very bright, but drop off is swift. Full power only lasts a moment or two, before it automatically adjusts it's power. I bought this to walk my dog at night, and it does not last the entire 20 minute walk, before it switches to 50% power. At 50% power you're all of a sudden just carrying around a five dollar Walmart flashlight. Still not sure if that’s the battery dying, or the LED getting too hot. Either way, a flashlight that only lasts 20 minutes is not a very versatile flashlight. If this was $20 and you needed it to momentarily peer into dark spaces from time to time, I'd say this is a good fit for you. But if you're in situations where you need 15, 30 or 45 minutes of decent illumination, this probably is not the best option. I will say it is a good alternative to a penlight, in that it's very portable. It's not much bigger than the size of a dry-erase marker, so it's easy to toss into a backpack or cargo pocket.

High quality, well made, well machined. Looks good, feels good in the hand.

PROS:

Warm yellow-gold cast white light. But NOT "too-too" yellow - or dingy. No, just pleasing non-harsh light. (This to me is a plus, I don't care for cold blue light).

The Zoom function works well.

It has an IPX8 water resistance rating. A web search tells me: IPX8 is based on testing conditions where the device is submerged in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

The flashlight remembers the last state it was in (low or high). There's a separate button from the tail switch for setting light intensity or strobe. Unlike other reviews, I have not found this to be something that I hit by mistake.

The highest setting of the 4 settings (500 lumens) has a powerful enough throw that you could run with it and have a good appraisal of what's coming for you on the terrain for 20 feet ahead or more.

This flashlight has NOT gotten hot or burned my hands - some high output flashlights do that.

The 2nd setting is merely a healthy regular flashlight output - it'd be fine for walking the dog, etc.

The 3rd lowest setting is minimal - I don't know if I'd want to use it for a walk and you'd never read by it but it would be a small area light.

You are provided with spare parts: 1. a spare rubber cap for the power switch tail piece. 2 rubber "O" ring gaskets - presumably for the battery cap or maybe for the front lens. This is thoughtful. These parts and tiny see thru bag are so small I'm going to retain the flashlight box and committing to keeping the flashlight box to store these in. YMMV.

CONS: The 4th setting - i.e. the lowest output settting: I almost wonder why they bothered. If you have the lowest setting running in a completely dark tent, and let your eyes acclimatize to it for 2 minutes or more, then yeah, it's the * vaguest * small-area night light. This setting is something to be aware of because...
The lowest output setting could drain your batteries to nothing. HOW? It's so weak you barely know it's on and if you somehow were to toggle to this setting and not turn it off , or not turn the main switch off , yeah it'd probably take a day or two but you'd drain your battery.

SO....I have had to cultivate an awareness that the flashlight is really turned OFF with (via) the tail switch. I look at the flashlight head after I have powered down. This is an annoyance but otherwise I like this flashlight.

It's not heavy, is long enough to be substantial but it is unlikely to fit completely inside a coat pocket unless you have deep pockets. It does have a built in belt clip which may be a Plan B solution for you. The belt clip is attached with a small machine screw and stay's put.

SUMMARY: I like this flashlight and am keeping it. I like it's quality of light, options and "throw". God bless non-rechargable AA batteries, you can buy 24 of them dirt cheap and they will keep 8 years in cool dry storage. I can recommend this.

This handy-dandy powerful small flashlight has been replaced by the manufacturer and I am now a very happy camper. It works great and immediately strikes me as a precision machined super-light. I was impressed with my 1st flashlight due to its high grade of machining/manufacture.

This time no change to that, I am pointing out how well the manufacturer stood behind their product. They responded to my problem immediately and I received another flashlight soon thereafter.

Good job and a huge Thank You to them!

My tool bag has a carefully curated set of base tools that are light, functional and durable. This flashlight is now part of that base tool set, replacing an AA Mag light and a short lived Duracell LED flashlight. My requirements were replaceable AA size batteries, durable case, not blindingly bright, and does not roll if you lay it down. This hit all the marks. Some flashlights have more lumens, but if you are working in a wall or under the hood, flashlights can be too bright. I typically run this on medium and that works pretty well. It still has a step up if I'm lighting up a larger area like a crawlspace or attic, but it has all the light I will need without being blinding. I thought about rechargeable models but I like the option of replacing the batteries quickly if needed. In the 6 months that I have owned it and used it frequently, I have only gone through one set of AA batteries. If your batteries are low and you don't have a backup set, it warns you by not going into the brighter modes. The flat sides near the neck prevent the flashlight from rolling if you set it down. This is a feature you don't know you need until you do. The tail cap switch is a bonus and has a satisfying click-on feel. I like this model enough that I'm thinking about replacing the car flashlights with these too.

I like how solid this 2x-AA light is. It feels like a well-made tool to my old hands. It's lighting modes are very good for my needs.
What I didn't expect is the controls are the opposite of my rechargeable light.
This light is going into my SUV, to replace the old 3x-AAA Mag-light that is starting to corrode inside. This new light was tested for hours, with old weak AA batteries and did very well. It's not going to get a lot of use, and will be inspected every few months for any sign of AA leakage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy little flashlight with brightness when you need it and extended AA battery life when you don't
Reviewed in Canada on November 27, 2023
Color: Black Cool WhiteVerified Purchase
I've owned this light for over a year now, and it has served me well through camping (in the rain) and power outages, and just the odd need for extra light. The 5 modes are nice: firefly for a little light and insane battery life, low and medium for in between, high for when you need the most light and aren't as concerned with battery life, and strobe for, well, whatever you want I guess, and it handily remembers the last mode you had selected when you turn it off and on again (except strobe; it will remember the last mode you had selected when you activated strobe). I've yet to replace the original AA batteries I installed in it.

The water resistance is an excellent touch. And the included lanyard and replacement button and o-rings are appreciated. The only feature I wish it had that it doesn't is a low-battery indicator. The only concern I have with its operation is that on high, it doesn't reduce its brightness after the amount of time specified in the manual, but ThruNite customer care assure me that this is normal and a temperature sensor will lower the output if necessary, so not worth deducting a star for.

If you want a versatile, water resistant, portable metal flashlight that runs on AA batteries and has good illumination and battery life, you could definitely do worse than this little guy!

Held up to a year of use, never got really wet but was taken on rainy days and nights in a back pocket. Max setting is properly bright and settings 3 and 4, I bought another one.

It comes with replacement rings for the LED and the button mechanism and a replacement button, I have had no need of them yet, and lanyard is thick and able to be tightened well. Lanyard has been attached since day one.
