2016 is a year of anniversaries for Riedel. The company is celebrating being in business for 260 years while Vinum - the company's most successful glassware range - is turning thirty. 1986 was not just an important year for Riedel but for all wine lovers around the world. The launch of the machine-made Vinum glass collection by Riedel Glas fundamentally changed the drinking glass culture. In 1973, Claus J. Riedel, the ninth generation of the family-run company, introduced a winefriendly, handcrafted and hand blown range of glasses. The 'Sommeliers' range is now world famous. In 1986, his son, Georg J. Riedel, presented a further innovation which would become even more significant: the first varietal-specific machine-made glass in history – Vinum!

Broken on Arrival: Buy in a Store
Broken on arrival: The glasses themselves truly do make a difference in how the wine tastes, but Amazon’s packing for shipment leaves much to be desired. The wine glass boxes (4 of them) were placed inside a large packing box with no peanuts or paper for cushioning to prevent the inner boxes from bouncing around. Do NOT buy these online. Your best bet to ensure safety is to pick them up in person from an actual store.That said, the glasses themselves are very delicate, and everyone who knows Riedel is aware of this, so I don’t know why they weren’t packed appropriately.The glasses are quite plain looking, but they do greatly enhance the taste of wine. I like my glasses to be elegant and pretty, but I am willing to sacrifice aesthetics for taste. I attended a wine-tasting (glass) seminar recently and was astounded by the difference both the shape and the quality of a glass make in how a good wine can taste.Overall: fve stars for enhancing the wine, three stars for appearance, and one star for inadequate packing.Be aware that buying these online might well result in broken glasses arriving at your house.
