Our story
How we got our start
It started in a living room in New York City in 2016. It all began when we spotted a trend; overpriced, low-quality gear being sold as high end. We knew there had to be a solution. That’s when Montem Outdoor Gear was born. What makes our product unique
What started out as a trekking pole developed by hikers, for hikers became a passion for developing, and engineering the most ergonomic and innovative outdoor gear. Our mission is to bring you the highest quality gear, for the best prices, with a touch of style (11 colors!), and a lot of ingenuity. Why we love what we do
Simply put, we have a passion for the outdoors. We aren't a generic company looking to start a massive business, we just love making gear and getting it into your hands without forcing you to spend a lot of money. We love coming up with new design ideas, colorways, and advancements in our gear.Product Description
Strong, durable, and made to last, thats our promise. We've spent over 5,000 hours designing, testing, and perfecting our trekking poles so we can offer you top of the line gear.
What's so special about that? We use aircraft grade Aluminum 7075, not cheap alloys or mixtures and we treat our aluminum appropriately during the manufacturing process. We don't cut corners and put the integrity of our gear at risk. This allows the poles to take a beating and keep on going.
Don't just take our word for it. There's a reason we've been chosen by Backpacker Magazine and dozens of other publications as THE BEST trekking poles.
At just 9.6 oz per pole, they're lighter than the other models made with more affordable materials, but MUCH stronger.
Perfect for any hike, walk, or stroll in the park, these poles act as two extra points of contact, taking load off your back and offering security on the trail.

Last week, I was hiking with a friend who brought her poles. I borrowed one of them to help with climbing over rocky terrain and from then on I was sold on the benefit of using them! I came home, did some research, and decided to order the Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles.
I have hiked twice since receiving them. The day they arrived, I headed to the state park that is 5 minutes from my home and hiked one of the trails there. It's an easy trail to walk so I wouldn't have really needed the poles but wanted to learn to use them and try them out. Then, yesterday, I went on a more challenging 7.6 mile hike in the North Cascade Mountains with my family. It was a much more challenging hike with lots of elevation gain and hiking over varied terrain. Here are my thoughts on these trekking poles:
On the first hike after I received them, I was more learning how to walk with them than really using them to help to help hike over uneven or difficult ground. The hike was an easy one with a friend and she and I both tried them out. While I could have easily done the hike without poles, I noticed that they were helpful in getting up the hills and that I didn't feel quite as tired going up the hills. They felt as if they helped propel me up the hill.
On the second hike, which was much more challenging, I noticed a huge difference in my ability to feel more stable when moving over the rocky parts of the trail, in walking thru the creeks we had to cross, and in feeling more secure crossing the bridges which had only one side with railings installed. Going up hills, while still not easy for someone who's not quite in shape yet, seemed more "doable" and a little less difficult because, again I felt as if the poles helped propel me up the hill a bit. My 20 year old son even used them for a while because he has a knee issue and commented they seemed to help him feel less stress on his knees.
The poles themselves are very easy to work. The flip lock adjustment system is smooth and simple to use. The flip lock feels a little flimsy, which makes me wonder if they'll hold up over time, but they held the poles firmly in the adjusted position with no sliding out of the adjusted position on the poles. The grips look like cork and feel very comfortable. Regarding the noise level using them, I found them to be fairly quiet with not much vibration noise. The few times they were noisy were the times when I tripped over them or connected one of them with the toe of my hiking boots. User error, not product fault! ha ha! There is a slight vibration noise occasionally when they may connect with a rock or tree root on the trail but overall they are quiet. They are lightweight and did not feel as if they added noticeable weight to my daypack.
Overall, I love them and look forward to using them as I make myself get out and do more hiking. I think they are a huge benefit for moving along the trail in a more stable and efficient way and I like the color choices they have as well. Their winning price point is a huge attraction for me as I could not have afforded more expensive poles and did not want to purchase something that was heavy, cheap, and wouldn't last. I expect the use these poles for several years to come!
I love supporting start-up companies who produce true top quality products so Montem will have my business and my recommendations to friends looking for hiking gear as well.
I ordered a set on a Friday with Prime shipping and had them in my hands on Tuesday morning. The only sipping padding they came with were cardboard sleeves around the handles. There was no other padding or wrap to keep them from bumping around in the box, but mine arrives completely undamaged.
The construction and quality are excellent, and the design seems thoughtful and purposeful down to the smallest detail. These aren't great poles with cheap handles or inexpensive rubber parts.
On top of each handle are smooth, rounded rubber grips for palming them during your descent. The rubber is comfortable and strong, not a cheap or slippery plastic.
The handle straps are sturdy with soft lining on the inside that will keep the straps from rubbing your hands raw on a long hike. While the straps are adjustable, it took me a bit to figure out how. There weren't any instructions, but I eventually got it. The adjustment mechanism is designed to tighten with the natural pressure of you hands when walking so they won't come lose with movement. The ends of the straps are flared so they don't pull all the way through if pull too loose. This seems like a small detail but I can't imagine trying to retread little straps with gloves on an icy trail.
The grips themselves are probably my favorite feature. They're made of a synthetic cork-like material with curves that fit very nicely in my hand. They're firm enough to hold tight but give enough to form to your grip. I have long thin fingers and it fit perfectly. I hope the material will stand up to long, repeated use, but so far it feels great and looks like they'll hold.
Just under the grips, the poles are covered in a black padding for choking up on a steep ascent. That's something I thought would be a no brainer, but seems to be missing in many other poles I've seen.
The shafts themselves adjust easily and have easy-to-read measurement markers for proper height adjustment. The adjusting clamps hold tight and have screws to ensure they stay tight. The grooves on the screws are wide and stand out slightly which is nice when you have to make an adjustment in the field with only a pocket knife or basic multitool.
The end of the poles have standard steel tips with rubber covers for the non-rocky hikes. They also come with a pair of baskets that screw on to the end for use in snow or other soft substrate (I use them on the ash fields in Mt St Helens.) I do wish there was somewhere to attach them when you're not using them. I foresee them getting forever lost in my gear pile at home when they're not attached. There is a clip that attaches the two poles to each other for easy attachment to you pack. I'll probably fashion something homemade to attach the baskets to that.
The metal shafts are indeed very light, but seem really sturdy and I have no problem putting my full weight onto just one pole. The one-year warranty gives me a little more confidence to give them a full hardcore workout. I can't speak to how easy it is to replace them, but based on the quick response and great service I've received from the company so far, I can't imagine they would ever give me a problem.
The introductory price seemed reasonable to me before I bought them ($40), but now having actually gotten my hands on them and used them, the price is well below what I would expect for the quality.
Thoughtful and thorough design, solid construction and they look stylish in the trail. I would recommend these to any of my hiking/climbing friends from novice to adventurous expeditionary.
