Quality product, recommended.(updated 24/6/2107)
Updated Review (24/6/2017Some months after purchase, the results I am getting are still good. but I feel the need to remove a star from what was originally a 5-star review. As mentioned in the original review (below), the blade assembly was tricky to re-attach after removing it to clean the unit. Tricky has now turned into difficult. I have removed the blade numerous times and it's getting harder to replace it after cleaning. Originally I thought the process would be simpler over time, but now I don't even want to take the blade off the trimmer at all. Getting it back on really is a test of both patience and dexterity. I really don't understand why the design makes it so difficult to re-attach the blade.Charging the trimmer after it stops running takes approximately three hours, and that still gives plenty of time between charges, but the unit does seem to turn off before it hits 'zero' percent battery life. I haven't found the cut-off point, but the trimmer just stops running when you think there is still a little bit of charge left. Be prepared to plug it in if it stops mid way through a trim. I'm going to call it a 'design feature', as it's really not an issue. Heads-up, that's all.Original review below.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Recently purchased after my Wahl HomePro finally EOL’d.It’s been a long time since I bought a new trimmer, and wasn’t prepared to pay over $100 for a new one. It would have been a lot cheaper to get the latest version of my old trimmer, but I wanted something cordless, and not over the top from a price point of view.Packaging.Good quality. On a scale of one to ten (one being a paper bag, and ten being Apple’s obsessive quality packaging), I’d rate it an eight. Trimmer and accessories come in a sturdy cardboard box with a hinged lid with magnetic closures. Inside it’s compartmentalised, with little covers over each section. Trimmer itself was additionally wrapped in plastic. If you don’t intend keeping the trimmer in the box, it can certainly be repurposed. Crafts people will love it!Trimmer and accessories. The trimmer is solid and comfortable to hold. It has an easy-to-read display showing time remaining, RPM (from 5000 to 7000 in increments of 500), a ‘burden meter’—if this goes into the red, the trimmer needs a good clean--and two indicators to alert you when the battery needs charging and when the unit needs oiling (after about one hour of use).It has a simple on/off button that is well positioned with a positive feel, a rocker switch to adjust the RPM (speed) of the blade and a locking, sliding switch for fine adjustments of the cut length. The shortest cut is 1mm (o.o4 inches), and slightly longer lengths are set at 1.3, 1.6 and 1.9mm.The blade easily pops off for cleaning—don’t use water to clean it—and the instruction booklet is quite right when it states that putting the blade back on can be a little tricky at first. The power cable plugs into the bottom end of the unit, as seems to be standard. The trimmer, without comb attachments, is 17.8cm (7 inches) long. The power cable itself is 7ft long and has a USB fitting, making this ideal for taking abroad—it charges when plugged into your computer, too. The other end of the cable fits directly into the trimmer itself, or the base, if you are looking for something more permanent. The base is wide enough to provide good support when used to charge the trimmer. Brio suggest letting the trimmer discharge down to about 20% between charges, (30 minutes or less time remaining), rather than plugging it in after each use.Two reversible clipper heads provide extra cut length (3, 6, 9, and 12mm). They are pretty solid, and clip securely to the trimmer with no rattling. The end of the ‘teeth’ are well finished, and not pointy, as some can be,In addition, there is a simple but sturdy little brush for cleaning, a bottle of lite oil, and instruction booklet.Trimmer use.The unit needed an initial charge, which took a little over 4 hours when plugged directly into an outlet (Brio claim 3 hours for a full charge). I used the shortest cut possible on a beard with approximately one week’s growth. Adjusting the RPM didn’t seem to affect the speed of the cut all that much, and overall it was simple to use and gave me a cut that I was more than happy with. It was nice to have a trimmer that wasn’t burdened with a cable, which made the job that much easier. (Also handy if you like to trim other areas!)Cleaning the unit was easy, with very few nooks and crannies where hair might get trapped. I removed the blade to check to see how much hair had found its way underneath and was surprised to see it still very clean, with just a few hairs hair stuck to the lower (exposed) part of the blade.A fully charged battery should give about 240 minutes of cutting time at 5000RPM, and 180 minutes at 7000RPM—plenty of time between charges. The unit can be used with the cord if the battery has not been charged.Downsides (nothing that warrants the removal of a full star, IMO).It would have been nice to have had a travel pouch included to hold the trimmer and accessories. I am fortunate enough to have one already, but if you don’t, and plan on taking this away with you when travelling, the box is not ideal. Also, the blade assembly IS tricky to re-attach--Brio acknowledge this in their instructions. It will probably become easier with practice, but I am a little surprised that this is even an issue on what is otherwise a well-built product.Overall I am happy with the purchase. Time will tell if it lasts the ten years that I got from my old trimmer, though. I feel it well deserves a five star rating, and would recommend it without hesitation.

I've trimmed my head, beard and body for my entire adult life (I'm 42) so I've had a few trimmers, some were ok, some not and I know what I'm talking about.

Presentation:

The Beardscape arrived in a nice, magnetic opening box that you can reuse to store it and its accessories or you can use it to store other stuff. Each compartment comes covered with cardboard lids printed with the shapes of the parts underneath it. In it you'll find the Beardscape, two combs with two different lengths each, a charging base, a long USB power cord, an iPhone-like 110-220 Volt power adapter, a brush, a bottle of oil, a small instruction booklet and a warranty card.

Design and construction:

The Beardscape is made of high quality plastics in light and dark grey tones, the blades are made of ceramic for the moving blade and titanium for the static blade. The static blade has smooth, rounded teeth. It has an adjustment lever to change the height of the cutting blade from 1 to 1.9 millimeters in 4 steps for very precise cutting lengths. It has a rocker switch to change the speed of the motor between 5000 and 7000 RPMs in 4 steps and a power on/off button. At the bottom of the Beardscape is an LCD screen where you can see the speed setting, the remaining battery time, an indicator to oil the blades, another to show if it is plugged and charging and a burden meter to show if the blades are moving freely or not.

The Beardscape feels hefty and solid in the hand with no creaks when you grab it firmly, the blade height lever has firm locking positions and the rocking lever and on/off switch have a nice, clicky action with no rattle.

Usage:

After charging the battery for the first time and turning it on, the sound of the motor makes you wonder if it will be powerful enough, even at the highest speed it sounds less than half as loud as my one year old Phillips Multigroom but as soon as you start cutting you realize that it is not underpowered as it cuts decisively and without pulling hairs even at its lowest speed. It is a strange feeling for the first few uses that this thing that vibrates so little and is so quiet, cuts as well and with such precision.

The Beardscape can be used wirelessly with the integrated lithium battery or plugged to the wall with the power adapter and USB cable which plugs to the charging stand or directly to the trimmer.
The battery lasts a long time and I hope that with good care it will stay this way. Lithium batteries are very different from standard Ni-Mh or the older Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries, they are very powerful and could even be dangerous if not cared for properly but with basic care they can have a long life and are perfectly safe. They don't like to be totally discharged or overcharged but they don't have a memory-effect so try to keep the Beardscape in a medium state of charge, it is ok to charge it completely and let it run out from time to time but try to keep it between 20-80% of charge, especially when storing it. Don't leave it charging on its stand or at least disconnect the stand so the battery is not kept at 100% charge all the time.

The blades have to be oiled from time to time to reduce friction and maximize battery life but the choice of titanium and ceramic already reduce friction and heat. Trimming my head, beard and neck at a medium speed for 30 minutes barely produces any heat on the blades or the motor. Comparing again to my Phillips Multigroom, the blades of the Phillips get quite hot in this amount of time.

It is not waterproof or even splash proof but if it were, you would have to oil the blades more frequently. This is the only thing that I think that could be improved in a future model.

Conclusion:

As I wrote in the title of this review, this is by far the best trimmer I've had by far. It is a solid, high quality product with great design and good choice of materials. It feels much more expensive than what it costs, I recommend it highly.

I thought I'd get some use from this before writing a review. My initial impressions were very positive as I am used to beard and body trimmers more in the 30-45 dollar price range with experience in even cheaper options (stay away from shavers less than 20 bucks). There are a few things that set this shaver apart from the less expensive alternatives.

1. The cutting mechanism on this razer appears to be ceramic. Ceramic can maintain a very sharp cutting edge for a very long time (longer than metal in my experience) but is brittle making it not ideal for knives and other tools that may see harsh treatment. For a shaver? Perfect. The leading edge is metal to protect the blade allowing it to never actually touch your skin. This also allows it to avoid nicking you when pressed directly against your skin vertically (Think lining up your sideburns or other more sensitive areas).

2. The micro-adjustments on this shaver are very good. There is a slide mechanism on the razers head that allows for very small adjustments. It also locks in place in case you get a little sloppy with your grip or finger placement while shaving. Speaking of micro-adjustments, you can actually adjust the motor speed of the trimmer to go from turbo-ish cutting power to something a little more smooth and easy for more sensitive areas. This is also a feature that I love on this trimmer.

3. The battery life appears to be excellent. While I've only owned this a couple of weeks, I use it almost daily and so far I have not had to charge it once. Big plus. There is a digital readout on the trimmer that gives you some stats like speed and charge and it still looks great.

The only downside I can see for this trimmer is that It is not waterproof. I do not shave in the shower so that feature isn't a deal-breaker for me but I do like to occasionally rinse the head off and I know this trimmer requires care of precision if I am going to be doing that. This is not a big enough downside for me though to not give this trimmer 5 stars since it does state upfront that it is not waterproof.

If you've been using inexpensive trimmers that after months of use begin to pull or tug on your hair instead of the experience you got when it was brand new, have a trimmer with less than stellar battery life, or just want to try what a premium trimmer feels like and stop buying new trimmers every year or two, Id seriously considers getting this one. It's fantastic.

Bottom line: If you purchase the beardscape, you won’t have to worry about buying another pair of trimmers for your beard for a long long time. While a $100 price tag may seem steep for a pair of trimmers, there are a few key details to keep in kind in what you’re getting with this product:

1) This is a quality durable trimmer that’ll last for years, if you’ve bought cheaper trimmers before like me, you’re lucky for them to last a year or two and maintain their quality, you buy this and you’re set, don’t have to worry about replacing it.

2) the features: you have 3 or 4 different blade speeds, a battery life that lasts way longer than you’ll ever need, it’s cordless, but If you do happen to run out of battery life, you can plug it in and it’ll work instantly, you don’t need to wait for the battery to charge.

So far in my experience with it, no pulling, tugging or pushing, it’s a very clean, precise cut, this is a $100 investment that is worth the money, Brio’s got a recommendation from me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Display upgrade and sharp attachments
Reviewed in Canada on March 22, 2024

The only change from a v1 that I can see is that it has a subjectively better display (which definitely did not need to be upgraded) and the attachments which are scratching the skin because of rough plastic edges.

The display was fine and had a large font, very easy to read even from the mirror reflection. Now it is a fancy looking colored display with a small font.

The battery in my v1 died completely after 2 years of once-a-week use. I it won't happen to this newer revision

UPDATE:
Battery died after 5 months. I observed 50% dropping to 0% in a matter of seconds while it was disabled. Charged it only once and used once a week

Amazing beard trimmer, the only con which is minor is that it is a bit fiddly to put on the attachments but apart from that this is the best beard trimmer for beards in the market, in my opinion. You will not be disappointed. Great for longer beards and I can see it would be great for shorter beards too!
