I bought two of these for Christmas. One for my son and one for myself. Where we live, it's quiet. Too quiet. Trying to fall asleep to nearly complete silence is rough. We both used to run box fans just for some noise, even in the winter. Summertime, sure a fan running is nice. But in winter, they add a chill to the bedrooms and add to our electric costs for both running the two fans and for the added cost of the furnace running overtime to reheat the rooms. Since we have been using these our electric bill this year has dropped $152 from last year for the same time period but the outside temp has been 2 degrees colder this year over last. So, by using these instead of a real fan, I have already saved more than the cost of the two units in only one month. That's a win-win in my book.
VOLUME:
As far as the unit's volume. The volume is excellent. The volume controls are easy to access and the volume ranges from nothing to uncomfortably loud. So, yeah this unit has very good noise levels, unlike a unit I had for my son when he was little that couldn't even be heard when his door was closed. The speakers on these units are very well made.
SOUND:
The sounds in this unit are both varied and pleasant. The fan sounds do sound just like a variety of fans. There are no makers as to which type of fan it is, but most people know the sounds of the different fans by experience alone. The white noise sounds are also excellent. They are similar to the fan sounds but not so distinct a sound.
All sounds whether they be fan or white noise NEVER have a repeating session. Nothing worse than those "nature sounds" units that each sound only lasts for so long and then the sound suddenly cuts to return to the beginning, Those types of units only keep a person awake, waiting for the end. at which point of you are almost asleep, you will naturally wake back up. These units don't have that issue at all! These Adaptive Sound units never have those horrible sound stops and starts that will only keep you awake. These sounds run continuously.
QUALITY:
I was impressed with the packaging and the unit. A lot of care was taken in both. The unit appears to be very well made. The controls are easy to work and should last years. The unit is a nice size and doesn't take a lot of room on the nightstand. They are a nice hexagon shape and color that won't look unsightly in your decor. The bottom contains a wire guide to keep the wire contained and running from the plug to the back of the unit as to not bunch up under the unit allowing the unit to sit well on the table.
OVERALL:
I had hesitated to buy these for a long time because I had a very expensive unit for my son when he was young that I was unhappy with for multiple reasons (too large, not enough volume, speaker of low quality, the sound would stop and restart from the beginning again, waking him up. etc. Not to mention other people's reviews of similar units. However, when I caught this on a sale and was looking at another winter of high electric heating bills, I went for it. I AM SO GLAD I FINALLY GOT THEM.
Cons: None
Even after running these every night for over a month now, neither one has had an issue. My son runs his during the day as well while he plays his video games in his room. Never an issue and not a single thing I would change about them.

Love it
I love this thing. I was looking for something to create white noise while I sleep without having to run a fan (especially in the winter). I work 3rd shift, so I'm sleeping in the mornings when most other people are getting up and heading out to start their day. I also live not too far from a school, and busses run nearby my house every weekday morning on school days. So I really benefit from having some white noise to help block out outside sounds. This device is great. I had bought a different brand originally and it was terrible. The sounds were so fake and so obviously on a loop. I ended up returning that piece of garbage. This device isn't like that at all. The sounds are either various fan sounds or various types of white noise. There are twenty different sounds. None of them sound like they're on an obvious loop like other sound machines tend to. It's been a very helpful device for me when it comes to sleeping. The ONLY negative thing I can think of is that I kind of wish the controls were digital rather than analog so it would be easier to differentiate when scrolling through the different sounds. But overall I'm VERY pleased with this device and I recommend it to anyone looking for a white noise machine.
