Grinds better than the supermarket grinders. I’m not sure if this is a real Zassenhaus pepper grinder or a knock off. Works good though!

This mill has a ceramic core which stays where you set it. The beech finish is smooth but still offers sufficient traction for producing a lot of pepper in short order. Twisting right-to-left or turning continuously in either direction seems to produce about the same results: copious, uniform ground pepper. I live near the Pacific Ocean, and I've used this mill daily in my kitchen for more than a month so far with no corrosion on any visible hardware, and no visible wear to the finish of the wood either. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a simple, functional, and attractive little pepper mill, not a gargantuan medieval table leg. Some of the mills being offered here appear to be designed to club recalcitrant guests into submission...

Amazing. I have gone through so many salt and pepper grinders that either performed poorly, were a pain to use and keep adjusted, or just plain broke that I nearly gave up on them. These grinders grind beautifully, stay adjusted, yield a good amount of grind per twist, and hold lots of product. A joy to use and built to last. A little expensive but worth every penny. Some have commented on not being able to get a very coarse grind, but that is what a spice grinder or the bottom of a pot are for. The only possible modification I could ask for is offering them in multiple colors for different peppers and salts.

First off, let me say that for the price of this mill, it should come in a box or some packaging that is more protective than the single layer thin bubblewrap pocket it arrived in. Of course amazon packed that in a bubble envelope that was way too large, so you might expect some dings in the body or cap as mine has (minor).

Initial impressions are that it really does grind nicely throughout the whole range. Coarsest is pretty darn coarse and the finest is nearly a powder (this will depend on the corns somewhat), and it's super smooth and easy to use.

Compared to the Peugeot classic and some unknown quite olde German mills my grandparents had, I think the quality of craftsmanship on this is just mediocre. The cap nut is nicely chromed. The stainless hex mill rod on mine had pretty poor threads such that the cap nut wasn't easy to start and felt gritty - so being the handy type, I cleaned up the threads with a die (6mm x 1.0 for anyone interested) and touched it up on the grinder and wire wheel. Acceptable now but that was twenty minutes spent that shouldn't have been necessary. The way the plastic rod socket is pressed into the wooden cap doesn't inspire long term confidence but the mill does grind with very little effort so maybe it'll be fine.

Finish on the wood is thin and not very rich, but it's even...whatever clear coat is on there isn't very water resistant, especially on the bottom end grain.

Most bothersome was the rough texture on the inside (which is stained, by the way) from the use of either dull tooling or too-fast turning in the manufacturing process, not sure how they make these exactly. As I dumped out the dozen tester corns, I noticed several wood splinters. Looking in the chamber, there were a couple areas where rough damaged wood was jutting out. I poked a needle file in there and broke those off - they came off with zero effort so it's likely they'd end up coming out with the pepper at some point if not removed. That's a big failure for a food product and not worthy of the pricing. Zassenhaus, get with your factory and address that.

All of this is ok, really, it's just a pepper mill, but for the price and "German"-ness, I expected more. The quality of classic Peugeot and the USA-made Fletcher's Mill is a little nicer, for the same price. I like the grind adjustment on this more, however, so it's a keeper and I hope it ages well.

I'm happy with this pepper grinder. The grind selection mechanism on the bottom is handy, and doesn't need to be reset every time you refill. It isn't the easiest to refill. The opening at the top is pretty small. Kinda wish I'd gotten the lighter wood version, but that's just a matter of visual taste.

Update: Reduced to 3 stars. I liked this for some time. But the grinding mechanism suddenly failed completely. Maybe it was the peppercorns hardness. I don't know. There was no fix, so into the trash it went. I gave it a second shot (new one), and so far it's doing
OK. I prefer my grind medium coarse, and that's what I get.

I do find it awkward to fill. The peppercorns have to be loaded slowly, or they go all over the place (the floor, usually).

Finally received this beauty after a mishap on my first delivery 2 weeks ago.

Finally it was packaged correctly.

This time, the small booklet was attached to the top. So happy to see that. I didn't realise the included peppercorns were from Vietnam. Regardless, I tested this grinder and it works flawlessly.

Now, I need to save up for a sea salt grinder.

Glad this was made in Germany...

This is the third Zassenhaus pepper mill I’ve owned. One is still in use after 35 years. Another served me well for more than 30 years. The grinders were steel. When it came time to replace one of them four years ago, I purchased another Zassenhaus. This mill has a ceramic grinder. It never impressed me,. Didn’t grind as precisely as the older style. Tended to clog. But it was adequate for for the first couple years. Now it barely functions at all. Changing the coarseness of the grind is useless. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Within the past couple weeks that’s become irrelevant since it’s no longer working at all.

I had to buy this pepper mill after reading the glowing reviews. There is just one problem with this pepper mill. It does a very poor job of grinding pepper. After grinding for several minutes, only a dusting of pepper is delivered. I have it set on 2 as I prefer a finer grind. My experience is nothing like the reviews. It really makes me wonder if anyone acually used this mill prior to reviewing it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Prodotto valido ma attenzione a quello che ricevete, potrebbe essere usato!
Reviewed in Italy on October 28, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine sehr gute Pfeffermühle
Reviewed in Germany on July 10, 2018
Size: 7.1-InchColor: Dark StainedVerified Purchase

Excellent grind, easy to adjust grind. A little disappointed that there is plastic or nylon in the cap that turns the stem. Made in Germany so I hope they knew what they were doing. Seems to work really so far. Don't rely on a claim that it comes filled.
