Almost perfect: my comparison between this widely-available grinder and one that's slightly better.

Almost perfect: my comparison between this widely-available grinder and one that's slightly better.
I already had a Zassenhaus Panama grinder, which is included in my pictures to the right of the Porlex, but I accidentally let the bearings in the handle rust after I cleaned the whole unit, so I was using a grinder that was only mostly working for the longest time. Then, partly on a whim, I decided to get this grinder, because I'd been eyeing it for the last year, even before I got the Zassenhaus. I was very pleased with how durable and well-designed this grinder is; the bearings are well-protected inside the unit, and everything can be taken apart. I think the Porlex will still likely hold up in the far long term compared to my Zassenhaus, for which I anticipate needing to order replacement parts in the near future if I were to use it in place of the Porlex. This all comes with one big, important caveat, however. While I appreciate the ceramic burrs, and while it may be true that they stay sharp longer than stainless steel, as I've heard more than once, they do not do as good of a job as the steel burrs on my Zassenhaus. For the same grind setting on both, I tend to get many more disappointing large fragments of coffee beans with the Porlex, and yet the Aeropress brew I make still isn't as clean as is made with the Zassenhaus. Overall, the actual taste of the coffee made with the Zassenhaus is noticeably better (but by a small amount, to be clear): sweeter and more prominent in characteristic flavor notes. This comparison was done right after I cleaned, dried, and ran a couple beans through to "season" the grinder, and after tweaking different aspects such as water temperature and grind setting on both for a couple weeks. In the end, the burrs on the Porlex prevent me from giving it five stars. I'm really not sure how it would perform with different burrs, since the housing is different from the Porlex and the Zassenhaus, and it's possible that the Zassenhaus simply has a better housing for the burrs that enable it to produce a more consistent grind. The reality is that this disparity in end product will likely push me to use the Zassenhaus until it breaks. Even after that, I anticipate I'll just order replacement parts for it.This is a nearly perfect grinder. Due to the spotty availability of Zassenhaus grinders, I urge you to get the Porlex, but if you see a Zassenhaus: be cautious with the bearings (i.e. don't wash the handle/lid), and it will serve you well.

First off, great quality of grounds.... super smooth, consistent and even grind with the Espresso/Turkish fine settings. Be prepared to take your time (2-3 minutes for a full double-shot), honor your morning coffee as the relaxing ritual it's meant to be, and enjoy.

For home use, I'm cheap and can't seem to find a reason to replace my old Bosch blade grinder I've had for about 30 years, and can't really complain about the taste of my coffee....After all, my Bosch works quickly, produces smooth grind, and doesn't heat up all that much. I suppose when the motor gives up the ghost i will switch to an electric burr grinder.

Meanwhile, I bought the Porlex Mini after deciding I also wanted a small, manual coffee grinder for travel or camping or maybe to take to work, when i want to treat myself to a good cup of coffee made with freshly ground beans. Despite my loyalty to my trusty Bosch blade grinder, I did notice that beans freshly ground in the Porlex Mini and NOT heated up at all by the electric grinder do taste better. And mainly, they smell better! I like a very fine grind, between espresso and Turkish, and this grinder does the trick (had to actually back off the setting from the finest because the grinds were just a bit too fine and temporarily jammed up the filter in the Espresso maker).

Directions for the Porlex Mini are in Japanese, but it's pretty intuitive to change the burr setting to get a finer or coarser grind. The Porlex Mini is well made and for my small hands, easy to hold. I like the hand-crank, reminds me of the winch-handles i grew up with sailing. The fittings are simple and perfect. I had read a lot of reviews of this product and some others before purchasing. My other choice would have been the Skerton Mini which is cheaper, but the design of the Porlex, stainless steel vs plastic container, overall size, etc, and the slickness of the Porlex construction swayed my vote toward the Porlex.

After grinding your fresh beans, just slide the bottom of the stainless steel canister down and pour the grounds into your espresso shot (for home), very little spillage. For the complete "portable" espresso bar, the Porlex Mini (without the crank) fits inside the Aerobie AeroPress, for easy packing. Of course, I couldn't resist purchasing the AeroPress, and also went for the Kaffeologie S Filter for AeroPress (Ultra Fine Stainless Steel Reusable), so i'm all set for my next trip.

The Porlex Mini Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder is a solid, quality piece of equipment that performs very well. I purchased it to add to my backpacking gear with an Aeropress, so that I can bring freshly roasted beans for coffee that is as exceptional on the trail as it is in my kitchen. I have since taken the kit to work and on day hikes ad am constantly asked about it. It grinds so perfectly, I even use it at home, for single cups, instead of my electric burr grinder. I kind of like the mini workout I get using it.

Having removed the silicone grip sleeve that wraps around the grinder and holds the crank, the grinder weighs about 8 oz. The crank is heavy thick steel, but does not flex at all while grinding, which means it's more efficient and less prone to failure. The crank arm is one solid piece with a pentagon shape hole punched out that fits the perfectly on the grinder and does not slip while grinding. The bulbous plastic handle on the other end is comfortable to hold and spins freely.

The conical ceramic burrs can be adjusted for fineness/coarseness depending on style of brewing. The burrs are adjustable by a nut that can be turned counter clockwise to open and with each turn there is an audible click. For Aeropress brewing, I've set mine to 7 clicks. The burrs can be removed for cleaning and putting it back together is intuitive (it's just not possible to put it back together incorrectly and ruin the burrs).

There are other mini grinders out there. GSI makes one, but the differences are they are mostly plastic and the cranks are flimsier. You do not want a flimsy crank. This is just a beautiful, functional and well-designed grinder. Yes, it's expensive, but I doubt I'll be replacing very soon and I intend to get lots of use out of it.

This grinder is amazing. Seems this is a new model with the top as a slightly twisted rectangular protrusion. I've tried Javapresse (cheap version of old Porlex with a hex protrusion) and the Handground grinder (looks cool, but not well refined as a product) as well as the Bodum Bistro electric burr grinder. I mainly use this to brew single cups.

This Porlex comes out on top as it's the easiest/smoothest to turn and the fastest to grind 20g in about 30 seconds (compared with ~1 minute for the other manual grinders I've tried). Very consistent grinds as well in my opinion. The build quality is also excellent and feels great in my hands every morning. The grind capacity is also about just over 20g which is perfect for me (makes measurement pretty easy even if I don't have a scale), but might be a problem for larger batches.

Both the inner and outer burrs pop out so it's super easy to clean. This is really helpful because I really hate the taste noises caused by old grinds so I always clean my grinder between coffee batches. I also prefer manual grinders because electric grinders make cleaning a bit more complicated (you'd need to either buy coffee cleaners or take it apart).

In summary, this is a super high quality grinder in a very small and minimalistic package that serves all my needs perfectly, making it a super elegant product.
