Beginning to agree with other that this is a fire hazard!!

Beginning to agree with other that this is a fire hazard!!
So after reading and ignoring the posts stating various issues with excessive heat, glass shattering, and toast catching on fire, I bought one anyway because the size was exactly the same as our old B+D, and the price was 1/5 that of a similar sized high end brand. Small toaster ovens are not easy to find anymore, and I thought the problems that others experienced were anomalies. After 6 weeks of using the oven, my wife was toasting a brown rice tortilla, left it unattended for too long, and filled the house with smoke. Her fault! (I thought at the time.) The oven was so soot covered inside that even after cleaning, the burnt smell remained. Out to the trash it went... and I bought another identical oven to replace the first. This morning (about 2 months after the replacement purchase) my wife was again toasting a brown rice tortilla. I was in the kitchen and saw a slight curl of smoke coming from the door. I opened the door and the smoke dissipated, so I closed the door and went back to my breakfast. At this point the tortilla was still floppy and white. A few minutes later my wife came into the kitchen to check it, and it was nearly toasted to her satisfaction, so she opened the door to remove it and flames ERUPTED! The oven sat under a cabinet, which now had flames reaching towards it. I pulled the oven by it's door handle to get it out from under the cabinet. I started to run for the fire extinguisher in the garage but the flames were now 10" above the oven (I measured this based on the cabinet height after the fact), so I ran back and slammed the oven door shut, which temporarily contained the flames. My wife opened the front door, I yanked out the power cord, grabbed two oven mitts and rushed the oven outside. We both stared at it as the flames slowly died (and the cat ran in hysterics from the wailing of the smoke detectors). Now several hours later, I've tried some crude forensic analysis. The tortilla is a cinder (literally), but only as a result of the flames, not the initial toasting process. The drip pan was out of the oven at the time, and we never "cook" in it so there was no grease, fat, or oil residue present. The bottom of the oven is perfectly clean except for the little grainy things that come on English muffins, and none of those were burned which indicates that only the tortilla was on fire, with the flames going up from the wire rack, not up from the bottom of the oven. Again, a clear indication that nothing on the bottom had caught fire. Although a tortilla is thin, which may cause it to burn easily, others report this occurrence with bread. And I don't know if brown rice is more flammable than wheat. There is one black mark on the back of the oven wall (inside), and I know that the exterior back gets very hot. (The attached photo shows the black mark as well as the clean, unscorched bottom.) I took the oven outside and plugged it in. Both heating elements heated normally with no sparks. Is it possible that the edge of the tortilla was touching the inside back wall, which superheated that edge while the rest of the tortilla was still "toasting" normally, and that edge was the origin of the fire? I don't know, but after buying two of these in the past few months, both of which are no longer in service, and imagining my house burning to the ground while trying to contain the flames this morning, I promise that I won't be buying a third. If anyone from the CPSC reads this and wants to contact me, please do. I'll hold on to the oven for a while just in case.(And as a safety message: 1. Fire extinguishers should be closer than the garage. 2. Smothering flames works wonders (had I not pulled the door open trying to get the oven out from under the wall cabinet, the flames would have not grown as quickly). 3. Learning from the experience of others would have saved me a lot of trouble!

This is a fairly good toaster oven. It can hold average size pans and up to 4 breads or 9" pizza. A classic 9 x 13 wouldn't fit in this oven!
This oven as a single heater on top, and another on bottom. This oven toasts bread relatively even and is way more convenient to use for warming up food as opposed to an oven. It's small and quick!
This oven heats up to 450 degrees on bake, has a broil option, warm option and toast option. Both heaters don't work at all times, it depends on what setting you put it on.
It has a 30 minute timer or stay on option. I always opt for the timer to ensure my food doesn't burn!
I use it most often to bake and rewarm goodies, and of course to toast my morning bread!
I find that my food in the toaster oven just the same as if does in a regular sized oven. Toasting however, is different. In a toaster your entire bread gets toasted at once. I the toaster oven, the bottom side is on the wire rack, forming a zebra effect! You can set the toaster in how dark you want your bread. From really light to dark. All a matter of taste. You need to be on top of your bread at all times, they tend to burn fast. Once you get the hang of it (which will happen fast) you'll learn how to set it just right to suit your needs.
The cord is just 2 short feet long for safety reasons. It is a 3 pronged plug. The outside if the oven gets really hot. Keep it away from plastic, wires or anything else. And of course, out of your children's reach!!
I always take this along when I travel. It's not that big, doesn't way too much and is the best way to rewarm food! I learn to appreciate this most while on vacation, or on a road trip! My husband and kids sure deserve warm meals at all times!

This oven comes along with a wire rack, baking pan and a crumb tray! Happy rewarming!

In short, this oven is great for rewarding and toasting. The perfect size and great for travel as well. Highly recommend!!

I bought this to use for baking polymer clay for my miniature projects. Heating up my big oven for crafts is a waste of energy and time to heat and this little oven works perfectly for this purpose. It heats very fast, maintains the heat and bakes my clay to perfection. There have been no failures or burning with the clay and it is safer to bake polymer clay in an oven not used for food preparation. However, I have never owned a toaster oven, so I was curious about it and, before baking clay, I tried it with food. It toasted, heated and broiled quickly and I was tempted to bag my clay baking idea and keep it for food! However, I decided it is so reasonably priced, I can buy a second one for food if I decide I want to do that. So, it is a craft oven and functions very well for that purpose. The only thing I would like that is missing is a way to latch or lock the oven door in the closed position. It would be a good safety feature and it is missing. I move it from surface to surface and have to remember not to tip it, or remove the pans, prior to moving it. I have forgotten and had the pans and oven rack clatter to the floor! So far, I haven't bumped it while baking so the door hasn't flopped open. I think that is a design improvement needed in the next model. Overall, it works well for what I need and it's been a good purchase for my use.

Update!!! Black and Decker contacted me about my review and spoke to me personally on the phone and they are taking care of me and getting me the toaster I wanted direct from the factory. I was amazed at their customer service and how far above and beyond they took care of me in this situation. I didn't know good business practices still existed like this. Very, very impressed and they won me over and I look forward to buying their products in the future with confidence that they will stand behind them. The rep Michael also told me there's a two year warranty and if there was any problems with my new oven to contact him directly. Once again this toaster is really nice and works great, I just nit pik a bit much. thx Black and Decker. Sincerely a won over customer by outstanding service.

I just got this and holy big for what it is. My family I just visited had a little black and decker toaster oven we were using to do bagels and hot tuna melts and I got home and said that's what I wan't. Just a little toaster oven. This thing is huge, twice to three times if not more the size of theirs. It has no room once the shelf is in either from rack to roof of the unit is like three or four inches. Then take into consideration that this whole unit except for the sides heats majorly up to burning hot (front, back and top) So you have to keep it even further away from the wall which leaves not much counter space in front of it. I just wanted a little toaster oven. Why do they have to keep improving stuff too no limit. The handle got fairly warm for just making toast and I'm worried if I reheated a pork chop for fifteen minutes that it might get hot or melt. I'm guessing it will be fine and it works nicely so it's a fine unit. For all you big fancy home owners with tons of counter space and that don't have the plug in right behind the toaster so as forcing to make you move the toaster even further forward so it doesn't touch the cord like I had to do. You guys and gals should love this oversized four slize toaster. It's a five star unit for ability. But like I said I know how small my aunt and uncles is and it doesn't have to be this big. So enough of me complaining unit works fine and has tons of dials to adjust for needs, it's overkill for a toast, grill cheese maker and hot open sandwiches though. Sorry to complain thought I was getting the cheapest smallest one sold and it would be like my families.
