Solid rack for Topeak MTX Trunk Bag

Solid rack for Topeak MTX Trunk Bag
I've been attaching my Topeak MTX Trunk Bag to the Topeak QR Beam Rack (V Type) for recreational rides since 2010. In 2015, I moved to an area that allowed me to commute to work on my bike so the Trunk Bag went from an occasional light duty weekend family ride to a daily ride packed down with change of clothes, shoes, lunch, and repair tools. While I never checked how much weight I had in my Bag, I know it was near the Rack's max weight of 20#. The rack would occasionally creak where it attaches to the seat post and I often had to realign it over my tire after a bumpy ride home on less than stellar roads. I decided it was time to upgrade to a rack that mounted more securely to the bike frame and the Explorer fit the bill. The assembly was pretty straightforward and the rails provided were long enough to reach the mounting holes behind the rear cantilever brake assembly on my Trek FX 7.2. To check the level of the rack before bending the support rails, I:1. placed my bike on level surface2. attached the bottom mounts of the rack first, but didn't tighten3. attached the rails to the bike frame, but didn't tighten3. placed a bullet level on the rack adjusted it either forward or backward until level and then inserted the bolts through the rack into the rails and tightened into position.I had to bend my rails to give them a slight arch to clear the brake assembly and stay level with the rack. but was able to do so without any tools. I also wasn't able to finger start the mounting screws into the frame near the rear gear cassette due to paint overspray on the threads. The included screws do fit, they just needed a little help with the proper size allen wrench. My MTX Trunk Bag slides on the Explorer rack and latches securely as expected. The rack is rock solid and I don't worry about the rack shifting out of position over the rear wheel anymore. I also like having the load taken off the seat post. My only complaint is that the length of the screws for the rails to mount to the rack are longer than necessary. While I'm sure they won't ever hit the tire because the rack doesn't bounce like the QR Beam could, a quarter-inch shorter would make me feel more at easy (see pics).

Just to start off, i should say that i am not really a 'hardcore' cyclist. If you're the kind of person who can put an entire bike together from memory, or the kind of person who commutes every day on a 900$ road bike and always wears spandex, your level of commitment and bicycle knowledge is probably years ahead of mine. I know enough to be able to name all the parts on my bike and do light maintenance, but i don't ride every single day, i don't tour, and i find road bikes kind of intimidating.

All that said, i like this rack a lot so far. It fit perfectly fine on my hybrid bike. I have a step-through frame, so the top of the rear tyre is actually several cm higher than the bosses on the seat stays, so i did have to bend the little rods on the front of the rack down quite a bit to get them to reach. But it's fine, it just requires a little effort; if i can do it, anyone can.

This might be self-explanatory, but just in case it's not, i do have one tip regarding those rods: If you do have to bend them, bend them only as much as you need to to get the holes on the rods to line up with the holes on the seat stays. Don't try to get it perfect, just keep it in place with one hand and use the other one to screw it on. The tightening of the screws will easily bend the rods the rest of the way.

Other than that, installation is pretty straight-forward. The instructions were kind of confusing to me at first because they're in a dozen languages, but actually there are only four or five steps. Partially screw the rods onto the rack, then screw the rack to the drop-outs, then bend the rods and/or screw them to the seat stays. You can then optionally install a rear light mount on the back of the rack. All the screws are standard hex bolts (i think #5 but i'm not positive), except for the one that attaches the light mount (it's a Phillips).

As far as quality and usability, i've only recently got 'serious' about bikes, so i don't have experience with any other racks. But from my experience just with this one, i'd say it's pretty good. I use a
Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EX  with my rack, and i have no complaints. There is a 'foot' on the bottom of the bag that slides into the rails on the bike rack, which holds the bag down and prevents it from moving side to side. Then there is a clip on the front of the bag that clamps down on the bar at the front end of the rack, which keeps it from sliding off the back. It seems very secure and there is almost zero movement.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a rear rack. My only disclaimer is, again, what i said at the beginning -- i'm not a hardcore cyclist and i don't know much about the things that they'd be likely to worry about, like weight and carrying capacity. But for the average person at least i think it's great.

I had this rack installed on my bike when I purchased it 16 months ago. I purchased a couple of standard panniers at that time, but they simply hung on the side of the rails, creating drag and occasionally bouncing off. There were non-Topeak panniers so they could not take advantage of the rail system properly.

I replaced the panniers with a
Topeak MTX Trunk Bag . I use my bike mostly for commuting and this bag worked very well. It is expandable, rugged and works well with Topeak's excellent line of clip-on lights, including the  Topeak Mega Red lite (3x1.5x1.5-Inch) . I use this bag on long weekend rides as well - its insulated main compartment can keep water and snacks cold for hours. The only problem is that I sometimes needed more room for things like a laptop, extra shoes and clothing, etc.

Because I sometimes need more room I recently upgraded to a
Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP Bicycle Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels . This bag provides all the room I could need for commuting and weekend trips. It too allows for a clip on Topeak light.

Both of these bags use the Topeak rail system and lock on the Explorer Bike Rack to attach securely to your bike. I have heard anecdotal stories of people losing bags but in most cases they will admit to not using the lock properly. Not that it's hard - it's a spring-loaded lock that is easily disengaged when you want it to disengage, but which will stand up to any conceivable pothole - trust me, I ride in New York City and its suburbs and, at certain times of the year, our potholes are just short of being officially classified as sink holes.

Overall this is the best rack/bag system out there and it is therefore not the cheapest, though it is not overly priced given its quality. I highly recommend the Topeak rail system for anyone who wants a reliable, sturdy rack with a long list of compatible bags and accessories.

Important notes:
1 - There is no such thing as a universal rack but this comes as close as you are going to get. That's why buying from Amazon is a good deal - their return policy cannot be beat.
2 - If you have disc brakes, you should purchase

You may think for this price it is definitely not worth it. I thought the same before I bought it. after receiving it i was very impressed by the build quality and the sturdiness of this rack. It can definitely handle more weight then it is rated, hold me up just fine with no flex at over 150lbs. It is very very light and I cant wait to add a bag to it.

I bought this so i could commute more on my bike. It fits my specialised crosstrail with discs very well. You may need to think a little carefully about fitting as a bit of imagination is required to get things lined up and straight as all bikes are different but i had no real problems. It gave me an excuse to potter in the garage for 30 minutes. In use the rack is really sturdy and i also bought this companies bag to slide and lock onto the top rail. This is really simple and has enhanced my ride to work ask I don't arrive with a rucksack induced sweat. several months of use and its held up really well. I also find the rear light fitting on the back good although I suspect it may not take every light especially older ones. On balance, great rack and would buy again.

Bought this rack for a 2018 Orbea MX50 mountain bike with 29" inch wheels and hydraulic disc brakes. First off this is a review of the RACK. If your bike has no eyelets, or weird geometry, or is not designed for a rack then dont give this product a bad rating because of YOUR bike. Sure this rack should fit most of the 29ers out there (and it does for 95%) but it wont fit all. If sometimes finding different screws or making fit adjustments is beyond your capacity then take your bike to a bike shop or buy a bike with a rack already installed. **Review** - This rack is very good. quality and finish are top-notch. This rack offers extra clearance for bikes with disc brake calipers which extend beyond the frame, my bike has its calipers between the seat stay and chain stay so i really didnt need this particular rack (since i didnt need the extra clearance) but no harm installing it anyways. it comes with the correct amount of hardward (stainless bolts , washers and nuts) but the bolts are all M5. The M5 fits most bikes with rack eyelets but my bottom eyelets (near the axle) were bigger than M5 so i had to get bigger bolts from the bike store (probably M8). The top eyelets were fine at M5. This is not a negative since most bike have M5 eyelets top and bottom so its not an issue. The install was easy and quick. The rack sits level to the ground (with my particular bike geometry) and the rack is solid. There is a bracket on the rear for a light. i will be mounting a fender underneath the rack for additional cleanliness. i dont plan on using the topeak bag, just strapping a backpack to the rack. Only 690 grams. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Rack for my bike

Superb quality bike rack and it fit perfectly on my Fortified Invincible 8 speed. Note that my bike has the disc brakes below the normal location so you can buy this rack, not the disc brake version. One of the concerns I had was bending the front supports but I found that by attaching the front pieces first loosely then attach the rear portion to the rear wheel you could just gently bend the front supports in an arch which looks excellent as opposed to bending them. I am so pleased with the way it looks and how solid it is. Bought the MTX Trunk Bag DXP and it fits beautifully, was worried the spring may get in the way but not the case it simply slides in perfectly with a satisfying click. Secure and solid, you can't buy better racks and bags than these.
