StudScan

Use this mode to find the edges of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 inches (19 millimeters) deep. For best results, always start in this mode when looking for studs.

Note: WireWarning detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire.

DeepScan

If StudScan mode provides irregular readings or the Signal Strength indicator is weak, the studs might be behind more than ¾ inches (19 millimeters) of drywall. Slide the mode selector over one notch to switch to DeepScan mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1½ inches (38 millimeters) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets.

Note: WireWarning detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire.

WireWarning Detection

WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 inches (51 mm) deep. This feature works in both StudScan and DeepScan modes.

The Key to Success is in the Battery

A new, fully charged 9V battery is required to steadily power the integrated LCD screen in Zircon tools. Please note that, like a cell phone or any personal electronic device, the 9V batteries needed to power Zircon tools can lose power even when sitting idle. The installation of a fresh battery, with an extended expiration date, typically resolves 99% of problems seen by Zircon Customer Support.

Introducing the New StudSensor e50

The StudSensor e50 quickly and easily locates the edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It has two scanning modes that allow you to scan more surfaces in your home than normal stud finders:

  • DEEPSCAN mode doubles the scanning depth for walls up to 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) deep, and it enables scanning for joists in some ceilings and floors

For the e50, Zircon has wrapped up their proven, patented technology into a revolutionary new form. The e50's new body design can be held comfortably in either hand at any angle and reduces normal scanning errors. The rubber overmolded grip also gives you a secure hold.

In addition to a new shape and updated components, the StudSensor e50 offers several additional features to make finding studs and joists as easy and as accurate as possible:

  • Easy-to-read LCD display indicates stud edges
  • Updated SpotLite Pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to mark the target

Worked for me, but not exactly according to the manual or an intuitive way.

Worked for me, but not exactly according to the manual or an intuitive way.
Serves its purpose, if you learn how to use it. Red projected arrow (its appearance and disappearance) DO NOT identify the stud location, at least in my case. Here is how it worked for me (confirmed through repetitive hole drilling so I know exactly when were my stud edges):As you move the device steadily over the wall, as soon as the sound and projected red arrow appear, this means that the stud leading edge lies approximately underneath the area between the "C" letter of the ZIRCON name, and black triangle above it. Maybe around this triangle vertex. See attached photo. The device seems unable to identify the trailing edge (where does the stud end). You should rotate it and scan backwards to identify the second edge, which will be the leading edge this time.

I was initially hesitant to purchase this product after hearing negative things about electronic stud-sensors from my father-in-law and my handyman. Their advice was to go the old tried and true methods of tapping on the wall or using a finishing screw to confirm the location of a stud - both not an exact science either.

I spent the past weekend hanging various pictures, artwork, mirrors and other objects in my home after some recent remodeling work and I am THRILLED with the performance of the Zircon StudSensor e50! I can't say enough how well this product works!

The unit is super-easy to use and features a ergonomic grip with the power button recessed where you thumb will go. The unit automatically shuts off when the power button isn't depressed, saving battery-life. The onscreen indicator is virtually fool-proof and indicates the edge and center of a stud based on the completeness of the onscreen triangle. After finding center-stud the unit activates a small arrow-shaped laser indicating where to make your mark. Perfectly easy to use.

I'm happy to say that this sensor even saved me from a costly rookie mistake. I was planning on hanging a heavy mirror in my master bedroom and completely forgot that a pocket door was on the same wall. I kept scanning for a stud and I was receiving strange readings from the sensor. After initially thinking the sensor was malfunctioning I realized my mistake, thankfully before any drilling or nailing had taken place.

This stud sensor is now a permanent part of my toolbox. Recommended!

Works great.
I'm no home improvement guy, but it's always nice to have a good stud finder for hanging shelves, pictures, etc.
This thing does a great job of telling you if you're too close to electrical wires (you get a big ZAP bolt that flashes).

The price, quality, and ease of use made this the perfect choice for me.

I had a cheap Stanley model that would give false readings and left me with lots of extra holes in my walls... not cool.

This finder works great - no guessing at all. You can find the outer edges quickly - the center of the stud - electrical, etc.

Perfect.

The media could not be loaded.
It works and it doesn't. I guess it works MOST of the time.

The first time I used it, I used it to put up a towel bar and it did the job PERFECTLY. As seen in my video, I managed to get the towel bar up, directly in two studs and no extra mis-holes. I even mounted it level. Yay me!

My next project was a large metal rack to hold nail polish. This stud finder kept saying there was a stud where there was not. I ended up drilling 3 holes before giving up and mounting my second screw close to the door frame where I knew there had to be a stud. This was disappointing to me, because we live in a manufactured home and the sheet rock has a pattern in it and it is is not easy to just spackle and mud over. Normally, I do not even put holes in it ... I use 3M Command nails, but for some weight bearing items, I mount them directly into the studs. Thankfully, with my mount, I mounted the nail polish rack over the 3 extra holes, so I will not need to worry about it, unless we sell.

Thus ... this sensor works, but I would check, double check, knock on the wall and still be prepared to fail. I have not actually had a stud finder that was 100% ever in my life.

Takes one 9V battery not included. Lightweight and fits well into my hands.

I experimented by using the e50 through areas with known studs, and it detected them 100% of the time. The only time the e50 gave sporadic results was if I calibrated it initially in front of a stud or object behind the drywall. Then it would start producing erratic results. The LCD display and LED red arrow make it very easy to use, much more so than my dad's ancient 1980s stud finder with an analog calibration wheel and a series of LED indicators. The e50 uses a 9V battery and the battery actually just slides into the contacts without relying on those annoying connector tabs designed for 9V batteries.

Overall: 5/5 stars, works reliably - just make sure you are calibrating it in a empty spot otherwise it will produce erratic results - I know this isn't the easiest thing to do, after all it is supposed to find the studs.
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2015
This thing works well, as long as you're aware that the sensor is not shielded at all from objects on your side of the wall.

This means that, say, if you're working in a cramped space, or awkward position, or even standing too close, and your face or hand gets too close to the back of the sensor, you can get false readings. Or if it's initialized with something close to the back of the sensor, which is then taken away, it might fail to find anything in the wall.

Once I'd figured that out, it worked well... but frustrating that you have to be so careful with it. Is there no way to add some sort of shielding on the side of the device away from the wall??? And do other devices have this same problem?

To illustrate, imagine the device is extended to your right, then you drag it left towards your body... if your body/head/cat/moose gets too close, it can set off the detector, giving you a false reading. Or try with a pencil... initialize the device against a wall, then bring a pencil close to the back of the device; for me, it triggers when the pencil is an inch or two from the back... I'm pretty sure I'm not Magneto, and that this same thing must be happening for others...

I bought this to replace a three times more expensive branded German make that told me I had live wires in the middle of a composite door.
So far it's working well, I've had an issue when searching for studs the device can make them slightly wider than they are in reality through thin surfaces, but it's manageable once you understand it's querks.
