Gardena 18709-81 VS Melnor 65137 AMZ Oscillating Sprinkler Comparison
5 out of 5 stars
Gardena 18709-81 VS Melnor 65137 AMZ Oscillating Sprinkler Comparison
I'd like to think I've more important things to do than making sprinkler comparison reviews but when my first sprinkler, a Melnor, arrived unusable, I decided to both request a replacement from Amazon and order this similarly priced Gardena as a backup. I'd already lost a few days, and with the aforementioned important things on my plate and my dying grass (see pics) I couldn't risk another setback. The issue with the first Melnor was that the brass coupling was miss-threaded; there was simply no way of getting any hose or even the supplied quick connect to properly connect. It leaked massively and would even pop off because it could only be threaded about one turn and was far from engaging the rubber washer inside. I was happy to see that both the replacement Melnor and the Gardena attached to my hose properly and without leaks so I set up both sprinklers side by side deathmatch style to see what they could do.First off I'd say that build quality wise they are quite similar in that both are constructed entirely of low-to-mid-grade plastic except for the fact that the Melnor has a brass fitting, a bragging point for the company that I personally would have kept mum about considering it was the fail point on my first sprinkler. Basically using either of these sprinklers is akin to placing a fine china plate in the center of your yard. If someone steps on it it's probably a goner but treat them with care and you may get a few seasons use out of them. I ran them both at once side by side set to full length and width and with equal water pressure (I switched hoses back and forth to confirm) and found their coverage to be very similar. Distance wise I couldn't actually determine a winner. Width wise the Gardena appeared to be winning by a short margin. The spread of the canons on the Melnor actually looks to be a bit wider at the output point but those outer canons don't appear to have the full power of the inner ones. The Gardena canons are consistent and I think this is why it creates a slightly wider spray pattern. Running the sprinklers separately for full water pressure I confirmed this, getting 31' of distance from both sprinklers but only 19' of width from the Melnor compared to 21' feet of width from the Gardena. Not sure what that's worth but I've heard that width matters. And I was spraying in only one direction and measuring width from the center. Placing them in the center of the yard and measuring the full area results in double those numbers. 62' X 38' and 62' by 42' respectively. I'm sure results will vary depending on your water pressure, windspeeds, and the position of the moon. The Gardena quick connect it a little easier to attach as well. The Melnor attaches fine but often as I switched hoses I had to re-tighten to get it to stop leaking. One advantage of the Melnor though, is that you can disconnect the quick connect entirely and not use it. I think the Gardena quick connect must be used unless you modify things a bit. That small advantage aside, the Gardena is a clear, if slight, winner in most other categories and it's the one I'll be reordering in the likely event that one of these breaks in the near future. I may update this review if I see a clear advantage in durability over time for one or the other but I really am a very busy person so we'll see.

One of the best oscillating sprinklers I've ever had! This sprinkler is so easy to adjust - both width of coverage as well as length of pattern. It's small and easier to store than most oscillators. Such a good sprinkler, our neighbors borrow it all the time! Christmas will come, neighbors - and the one who latches on to my sprinkler for too long will be gifted with it and I will be the recipient of YOUR new sprinkler! Seriously, this is a great sprinkler - I wouldn't wan to use any other!

For precision watering it is unrivaled. Low flow, high flow, whatever, it works beautifully. I bought my first one last year and have just now purchased my second one to replace my Nelson oscillating sprinkler which will not oscillate if I turn the flow down too low and which is difficult to adjust to cover various areas without over watering.

I have several 4 foot x 8 foot planting boxes and this can be set to water them easily and very accurately. I also have several other beds of varying sizes and shapes and this sprinkler can be easily adjusted from narrow to wide and from short to long beds. The nozzles are of a soft material (possibly silicone?) and if they get clogged, as they inevitably do, then a simple rub or prod at the offending nozzle usually clears it. The downside? Two things: it's plastic and does not feel particularly rugged so it should be handled with some care. I avoid tossing or flinging it or banging it around and I don't handle it by the sprinkler head. Second, the flow control valve is at the base just under the sprinkler head and adjusting the flow while the sprinkler is on can make for rather an uncomfortable experience. My solution is to add a 6 foot leader hose with a quick connect on the female end. In addition, I use a ball valve with male quick connect attached to the male end of my hose to control the water flow. This allows me to stand away from the sprinkler and adjust the flow without getting rained on.

Pricey? Yeah, it is. But this sprinkler is the best I've ever used and I'm getting rid of all my other sprinklers.

This oscillating sprinkler has many adjustments that make it perfect for our odd shaped yard. Very flexible in what shapes, widths, it will cover. That was what I needed. The stake secures it nicely in the lawn. It is made out of plastic, but that is not a problem as it is sturdy enough for what it does. Good purchase.

This is a very nice sprinkler for a small yard or a yard broken up into fairly small areas. It can be a pleasure to use on a hot summer day, depending on your outlook.

Pros:
- On its maximum range setting, with my water pressure this sprinkler will cover about 36' x 18'.
- The coverage can be adjusted separately to the left, right, front, and back of this sprinkler, so you can easily water just a narrow patch of grass or a small area you just had to replant.
- It's easy to turn down the flow/height so it doesn't hit an overhanging roof.
- This sprinkler is relatively small and light, while a large base keeps it stable during watering.
- You can remove an end cap and daisy-chain this sprinkler with something else, if you're so inclined.

Cons:
- The adjustments are somewhat complicated at first, though you can figure them out fairly quickly through trial and error.
- You've got five adjustments to play with, so if you move the sprinkler around there's no way you're going to get the settings right on your first guess. If you can set these all appropriately without getting soaked in the process, you're a better waterer than I am. ;-)
- If you decrease the width of the coverage the little nozzles all tilt up, meaning you'll get more water on the side you narrowed. This isn't a big deal, but be warned. Note that the width adjustment is stiff, so it can be hard to get it right (see the last point above).

Note:
This sprinkler is designed for Gardena's snap-on connector system, which you're either going to love or hate. If you've already adopted Gardena's connectors (they fit Melnor connectors in the U.S.), this will be a nice convenience. Otherwise, you'll have to screw the included snap-on connector onto your hose end each time you want to use this sprinkler. If you just leave the connector attached to the sprinkler, however, that shouldn't be a problem.

Update 4/29/15:
I bought another one of these sprinklers a few weeks ago, and it leaked like crazy around the back of the little orange dial that controls the water height. I returned the leaky sprinkler to Amazon, but the replacement did exactly the same thing. Finally, I got a replacement head directly from Gardena support in Ontario (905) 792-9330, which worked perfectly. Looks like Amazon might have gotten a defective lot. Just be aware that this sprinkler is not supposed to leak.

I have a small patch of grass in my townhouse and wanted a sprinkler to maintain it. I looked at the ones my neighbors had, and didn't like how wasteful they appeared sprinkling beyond their fences on the concrete sidewalks and their siding. This little sprinkler was just the right solution!
I can control pretty much exactly where and what I want watered... Easy to operate and set; well built with good weight so it doesn't tilt or move from where I positioned it.
Very happy with it! Plus I also got a watering timer and I water twice a day for 15 minutes and can already see a difference in my yard after a week... Nice 👍

For Gardena people: lately I have experienced some problems with this Gardena Zoom Max, eventually it stops oscillating and need to give a little push in order to swing again, always stops on the same side (right as seen from the water inlet), so what ¿can I do to correct this problem?
The water in this area is some hard, so please give me instructions to fix this problem.
