Frigid temperatures have engulfed most of the country. Thankfully, expert-recommended gear to lessen the bite of the Arctic blast doesn’t have to cost a fortune. From enjoying the frosty beauty of nature to braving your daily commute, these discounted puffer jackets, down vests, and other winter essentials can help you face the cold—or at least better tolerate it.

If you’re looking for a recycled-nylon puffer jacket or simply want something more stylish, this coat is impressively warm, with 800-fill-power down. We also appreciated the well-made zipper pulls, the waist cinch, and the elastic cuffs, which were easy to roll up.

Other things to know: Not a formal pick, but another good option. Pricier than most of our picks. Slightly smoother recycled-nylon fabric in comparison with previous version’s shell. We liked the previous version of this jacket when we tested it in 2020, and we like this newer version even more. On sale in select (discontinued) colors.

Of the multitude of cheap base layers out there, we prefer those from 32 Degrees. These leggings aren’t as durable as our main picks, but they are stretchy, comfortable, and a good value for what they are—especially on sale.

Other things to know: Not a formal pick, but another good option. Available in a variety of colors and sizes. Unlikely to make it past a single season of regular use, but sometimes you just need something cheap. Use code NEWS30SHIP for free shipping.

Our preferred cheap base layers are especially inexpensive and regularly on sale for an even better price. They’re not the most durable, but this top is longer than some of our picks, so it’ll cover your back when you bend over.

Other things to know: Not a formal pick, but another good option. Limited sizes available depending on color. Despite the flaws and fragility, it’s a solid choice if you need something especially affordable. Use code NEWS30SHIP for free shipping.

When you want a stretchy, comfortable base-layer top at an affordable price, we like this inexpensive option. This shirt isn’t the most durable, but because it’s long—longer than even some of our main picks—it will definitely have your back when you bend over.

Every ski bum we know has owned a pair of these cheap, comfortable base-layer leggings at some point—and worn them until they were threadbare. They’re not the most durable, but they do come with a working fly, which even some leggings 10 times the price don’t have.

The Sunbeam Velvet Plush Heated Blanket, our pick for the best electric blanket, laid on top of a sofa with the controls on top.

Compared with other options we tested, this plush heated blanket was by far the most comfortable, with a cozy, velour-like outer material and better controls. It requires only a single outlet, and it also has a safety locking plug and fewer safety complaints overall among reviewers.

Other things to know: We could feel the wires, but they didn’t make us uncomfortable while we were sleeping. Deal is for the queen size in red. First deal we’ve seen on this item since 2019.

Two pairs of the L.L.Bean Bean Boots, our pick for best duck boots for people who want a boot that does well in the mud.
Photo: Michael Hession

Because they’re laced tighter to the foot than rubber boots, they don't slip on and off as easily, but they’re some of the most thoughtfully designed pieces of outdoor gear we’ve tried. Deftly balancing fashion and function, they’re great for wet and muddy weather.

Buying Options

$139 $81 from L.L.Bean

Price includes shipping (limited sizes and colors)

Other things to know: Comes in multiple colors, but sizes are limited in tan/navy. First notable deal we’ve seen since 2022.
