House Tour | Nayland Blake

The artist and collector Nayland Blake invites T into their Brooklyn home.

[MUSIC PLAYING] We’re in the home that I’ve lived in for 17 years. This is the bedroom and also where I draw. I’ve been making daily drawings for about five years now. The house is kind of broken up in terms of the ways that I use it. The living room. The kitchen. The inadvertent walk-in closet. It’s one of the downsides to being a borderline hoarder. That’s kind of my guiding design principle— both the joys and horrors of getting to have exactly what you want and as much of it as you want. This is a Christmas present from— oh, wait. That’s— I need that. Christmas present from South Carolina. A raincoat from Walter Van Beirendonck from his Pig collection. I call this room the archive. This is where I keep the majority of my art books. One of my favorites, I’ve had this for almost 40 years. My Dungeons and Dragons dice. And my main character, [INAUDIBLE],, who is a wizard gnome. These are sketchbooks and journals going back to my childhood. June 14th, 1978 “Dave and I were buzzed in fuzzed after a bizarre graduation party scene. Inner peace.” Yeah, I know. I think that’s probably a good place to stop. I’m big on pins. And I designed these to go along with my retrospective. In the early ‘90s, we used to put these up on advertising in San Francisco. I’ve had this Richard Nixon dartboard since I was 8. Walking stick made of string and popsicle sticks. My collection of vintage Melmac. Stuffed portrait of [? Newman, ?] my fursona. I love this, even though I’ll never be able to figure out why this rabbit is in love with this volunteer gnome firefighter. As a side project, I made the Village People in Lego. I won Best in Show at the Brooklyn Library’s Walt Whitman Memorial Beard Contest. My vintage can of Billy Beer. A Christmas card from John Waters that my dog liked so much that she chewed it up. I mean, I can keep going. You want me to keep going? [MUSIC PLAYING]
