SPRING DESIGN 2014

In our spring design issue, T celebrates risk takers. Leading the way is the architect-of-the-moment Joseph Dirand, whose elegantly spare Paris apartment, with its towering windows and generous slabs of marble, puts a new spin on minimalism. We travel to Tangier — long a refuge for adventurers and free-thinking outsiders — where a merry band of eccentric expats are letting their freak flags fly. We also step into the homes of a pair of visionaries: the self-taught sculptor Alma Allen, whose journey as an art star has taken him from the streets of SoHo to the wild borderland of Joshua Tree, Calif; and the madcap designer Nicky Haslam, whose new London reflects his flair for the unconventional and must be seen to be believed. Elsewhere, David Netto makes the case for personality and practicality in interior design; Hauser & Wirth buck convention by opening a gallery in a quiet English cider town; the legendary French fabric house Le Manach gets fancy new digs (but brings its handcrafted ethos along with it); and the surrealist director Alejandro Jodorowsky and a surprisingly-nimble-in-the-kitchen Kelis snack on gold popcorn while considering the future and blinged-out Louboutins.
