FIFA confirms Olympic roster alternates policy, USWNT's Emma Hayes says it offers 'flexibility'

Emma Hayes has clarified the rules over Olympic roster alternates, telling media on Monday that players replaced by an alternate can return to the core 18-player group. Hayes, the newly-appointed coach of the USWNT, said that as long as the team gives at least six hours’ notice, they can make a temporary change to the roster that may then revert back for the following game. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) went with the more flexible approach three years ago following Covid-19 and updated guidance published by FIFA on Thursday confirmed that it is sticking with that change.
