The Washington Capitals have promoted Chris Patrick to senior vice president and general manager, the club announced Monday. Brian MacLellan, who served as general manager for the past 10 seasons, will remain as president of hockey operations.

“We are thrilled to announce Chris’ promotion to general manager,” Monumental Sports & Entertainment chairman and CEO Ted Leonsis said in a release. “Chris is a dedicated and hard-working executive, who is fully prepared for this next step in his career. His vision, extensive experience, hockey acumen, and player evaluation make him the perfect leader to drive our team forward. We are confident that he will thrive in this new role.”

Patrick, 48, becomes the seventh general manager in franchise history as he enters his 17th season with the Capitals. He served as associate general manager in 2023-24, working closely with MacLellan, and has held various roles with the organization since 2008-09.

MacLellan, 65, is entering his 24th season with the Capitals. During his tenure as GM, the Capitals won a Stanley Cup, two Presidents’ Trophies and five consecutive Metropolitan Division titles from 2015-16 to 2019-20. Washington has a 449-244-88 record under MacLellan and the third-most wins in the league in that span. MacLellan has held the position of president of hockey ops since 2023.

The Capitals finished the 2023-24 season fourth in the Metropolitan Division with a 40-31-11 record. They were swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the President Trophy champion New York Rangers.
