England goalkeeper Mary Earps has joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer following her exit from Manchester United.

Earps has signed a two-year contract with PSG after her United departure was confirmed on Saturday. The Athletic previously reported that the 31-year-old was considering an attractive offer from PSG with her United contract expiring at the end of last month.

Earps flew to Paris on Friday to undergo a medical, sign her contract and film promotional content with her new club. The decision to leave United and sign for PSG was a tough one and only made late last week.

“Joining Paris Saint-Germain is a fantastic opportunity,” Earps said on her new club. “I’m very honoured to become a Parisian and I can’t wait to play alongside my new team-mates.

“Together, we’re going to give our all to help the club shine and make our fans proud. I’m determined to contribute to our future success so that Paris Saint-Germain continues to rank among Europe’s top clubs.”

In a message to supporters upon leaving United, Earps said it was “the right time to make a change and embark on a new challenge” with the club “about to undergo a period of transition”.

Special report: The state of Manchester United's women's team

Earps is currently with the England squad continuing her rehabilitation from an injury sustained in the 2-1 European Championship qualifying defeat by France at the end of May. England face Republic of Ireland and Sweden in a pair of Euro 2025 qualifiers on July 12 and 16 respectively with Earps set to remain within the national team set-up during that time.

PSG’s team training ahead of the 2024-25 campaign resumes in mid-July, depending on players’ international commitments. They will head to Australia for a pre-season tournament from August 25 to September 2.

PSG finished 11 points behind Lyon last term after winning the Division 1 Feminine title in the 2022-23 season.

United, meanwhile,  have been heavily criticised in recent weeks amid growing discontent regarding the club’s management of their women’s team.

The Athletic reported last month that the club’s women’s team will be moved out of the £11million training facility that had been built for the women’s outfit and academy in order to make way for the men’s first-team during the 2024-25 season.

United finished fifth in the Women’s Super League (WSL) last season, their lowest league finish since winning promotion in the 2018-19 campaign but did win the FA Cup, the women’s team’s first-ever major honour.

Earps played 125 times for United after joining from Wolfsburg in 2019 and has 50 senior caps for England.

In January, she was voted The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper for a second successive year, becoming the first two-time winner in the award’s history.
