Ruud van Nistelrooy has held talks with Burnley and is in the frame to become the club’s new head coach.

Burnley are searching for their successor to Vincent Kompany, who was appointed as Bayern Munich head coach last month despite the Lancashire club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy is one of several candidates under consideration by Burnley, who have interviewed former Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior. Assistant coach Craig Bellamy — who was placed in interim charge following Kompany’s departure — Scott Parker and West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan are also candidates. Frank Lampard had previously emerged as a contender but now appears unlikely to succeed Kompany.

Kompany guided Burnley to promotion to the Premier League during his debut season in charge as they topped the Championship with 101 points. However, the club were relegated from the top flight the following campaign after taking just 24 points from their 38 games.

Van Nistelrooy was PSV Eindhoven head coach for the 2022-23 season. The 47-year-old won the Dutch Cup at PSV but resigned before the end of the season, citing a lack of support within the club.

Burnley manager search: Three-figure longlist, interviews this week - but no rush

In May, Van Nistelrooy spoke of his desire to return to management and aspiration to experience the Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga — three leagues which he played in during his career.

The former Manchester United striker previously coached PSV youth teams and was twice an assistant coach with the Netherlands international team before his managerial stint back in Eindhoven.

Van Nistelrooy netted 384 goals across his career, which included stints at PSV, Real Madrid, Malaga and Hamburg. However, he was most prolific at Manchester United — scoring 150 goals across five seasons.
