Wrexham have appointed Michael Williamson as the club’s chief executive (CEO).

Williamson — who will replace Fleur Robinson in the role — has previously worked at D.C. United, Inter Milan and Miami FC, and will join Wrexham ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Most recently at USL side Miami FC, Williamson’s most notable experience came at Italian club Inter where he served various roles including corporate director, chief financial officer, chief strategy officer and co-CEO of the club.

The appointment comes ahead of Wrexham’s first season back at the third-level of English football since the 2004-05 season, following back-to-back promotions.

A joint statement from Wrexham’s co-chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds said that the growth of Wrexham on the pitch must be accompanied by the growth of the “club operations”.

Williamson — who will join the club pending visa approval — said:  “I look forward to working with the dedicated management, staff, and players who have excelled since Rob and Ryan’s arrival in 2020.”

Williamson’s Inter background fits with Wrexham’s Racecourse plans

Williamson’s appointment follows the departure of Robinson, who had been chief executive for the past three years. Her duties had dove-tailed with those of Shaun Harvey, who until being confirmed as a director just before Christmas had been working in an advisory capacity to the board.

Where Harvey’s focus was more on playing matters, such as transfer negotiations and contracts, Robinson was more involved with the day-to-day running of club operations. This included the one-time Burton Albion commercial director building up the non-playing side, including overseeing the huge increase in commercial activity.

Williamson’s stint at Inter included leading the planning and design of a new training facility and redevelopment work at the San Siro. This should fit neatly with Wrexham’s own plans to extend the Racecourse Ground — work to build a new Kop stand has been on hold for the past year — and construct their own state-of-the-art training ground.
