Map Shows States With Drinking Water Warnings

Boil water advisories were in place for several cities across the United States on Wednesday.

The advisories were due to main breaks and other operational disruptions to the cities' waterworks departments. Under a boil water advisory, residents in the effected area are urged not to use their tap water for consumption, including for drinking, brushing teeth or washing food or dishes. In the case that a resident does use their tap water, officials say the water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consumption.

Here is a list of states that had areas with water advisories in place as of Wednesday afternoon.

Illinois

Parts of south side Chicago were under a boil water advisory after a high-pressure water main break inside the Roseland Pumping Station late Tuesday night. According to a release from city officials, water pressure to parts of Beverly, Morgan Park and Auburn Gresham was impacted by the break between 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. CT Tuesday.

While the water main is "back online and fully pressurized," a boil advisory was in place on Wednesday out of caution until further notice. Those impacted by the notion included buildings and residences located east of Sacramento Avenue, north of 119th Street, west of I-57, south of 87th Street and south of Beverly Avenue.

"Residents should bring water to a full rolling boil for at least five minutes to ensure it's safe for consumption," read the city's announcement. "Boiled water may be stored at room temperature or refrigerated in a closed container until needed."

Free bottled water was available for pick at Ridge Park in Beverley for those impacted by the boil advisory. According to a report by WMAQ, by 12:30 p.m. CT, city officials had handed out over 1,000 cases of water.

A spokesperson for Chicago's Department of Water Management told Newsweek Wednesday afternoon that officials had completed water testing and are hoping to have results by early Thursday morning "and be clear to issue a boil order recision."

Kansas

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a boil water advisory for the Cloud County Rural Water District 1 on Wednesday after a waterline break lead to a loss in pressure in the system, which created a risk for bacterial contamination.

The advisory includes parts of western Cloud County in north central Kansas.

Residences under the advisory should boil their water for at least one minute before using for drinking or food preparation, according to a release from the state's health department. If tap water "appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears."

If using to disinfect dishes and food contact surfaces, tap water can also be disinfected by using one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon, read the release.

An email was sent to Kansas' Department of Health and Environment for additional information Wednesday.

Michigan

A water advisory remained in place for Sylvan Township in Michigan after the local water treatment plant experienced a "security breach" Monday morning. Officials at the Michigan State Police Department said that one suspect, a 33-year-old male, was arrested in connection to the security breach, which caused damage to the interior of the plant.

WJBK in Detroit reported on Wednesday that water testing came back clean in Sylvan Township but that residents who receive water from the township's treatment plant were still advised to avoid drinking the tap water until there it is cleared by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

Sylvan Township officials told WJBK over email that they are "hopeful" the EGLE "will give us the all clear and we can return to our normal routines" by Thursday afternoon.

"Once that happens, the Washtenaw County Emergency staff said they will send out a Notice again, and it will be hand delivered to those affected," officials added.

Newsweek reached out to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office on Monday for additional information.

Texas

A boil water advisory was in place for the surrounding Houston area two days after Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas. The Category 1 storm, which was previously clocked at a Category 5 hurricane while passing through the Caribbean, has left millions of residents without power and left behind flooding and property damage. As of Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Beryl was responsible for seven deaths in the U.S.

A water advisory was issued due to the power outages in several neighborhoods in Harris County led to a loss of pressure in the waterline, which officials said could allow contaminates to enter the supply.

The advisory impacts the following neighborhoods: Western Trails, Rollan Heights, Orchard Crossing, McGee Place, Homestead Oaks, Fairacres Section 2, Airline Link Addition, Cedar Oaks, Cedar Bayou Estates, Azalea Estates, Aldine Village Subdivision.
