The Phillies placed Suárez on the injured list because of lower back soreness. Manager Rob Thomson said he is not concerned about the injury and that the club is trying to be cautious. To replace Domínguez in the bullpen, the club returned Rucker from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list. After opening the season on the 15-day injured list with a right hand arterial vasospasm, Rucker was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 3. He appeared in 12 rehab games this season between Single-A Clearwater, Double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley, posting a 3.21 ERA with 21 strikeouts to three walks in 14 innings.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP Taijuan Walker (right index finger inflammation)
Expected return: August
Walker threw live BP on July 27 at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said it went well. Walker could throw another live BP on July 31, before possibly beginning a rehab assignment.

Walker, who began the season on the injured list with right shoulder soreness, has had difficulty locating his splitter this season -- an issue that Thomson said could stem from inflammation and a blister on Walker's right index finger. He was placed on the IL on June 23.

Thomson said Walker’s splitter has looked noticeably better with more movement in recent bullpen sessions and that he's also been locating his pitches better. When Walker first went on the IL, Thomson said the length of the absence would depend entirely on the righty’s ability to regain that splitter grip without any discomfort and throw the pitch effectively. RHP (right lat strain)
Expected return: Late August
Turnbull is playing catch from 90 feet. He could throw off a mound on July 29 at Citizens Bank Park. If he does and if it goes well, he will continue his rehab in Clearwater, Fla.

Turnbull made his return to the rotation on June 26, but he departed after just three innings after feeling a "little grab" on his penultimate pitch. He was diagnosed with a right lat strain and placed on the 15-day IL the following day.

"It's probably going to be six weeks, could be eight weeks," manager Rob Thomson said at the time.

That would put Turnbull in line to return in mid-August, though he'd need a rehab stint to ramp back up at that point. (Last updated: July 27)

LHP (lower back soreness)
Expected return:
Aug. 8-11 in Arizona
The injury is the second back issue Suárez has suffered in the past few weeks. He skipped his first National League All-Star appearance in Texas because of spasms on his right side. After rejoining the rotation on July 22 in Minnesota, Suárez said he felt fine afterward. But he woke up on July 26 feeling “tightness,” as manager Rob Thomson described it. Suárez tried to push through the soreness during his bullpen session that day, but he couldn’t.

“We’re going to be super cautious and give him a little rest,” Thomson said. “Over the course of a full season, guys typically need some time off. I think he’ll come out of this and he’ll be stronger coming down the stretch.”

Suárez can be activated from the IL as early as Aug. 7 in Los Angeles, but Thomson said the Phillies are hopeful Suárez will rejoin the rotation for the series in Arizona on Aug. 8-11. (Last updated: July 27)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: TBD
Covey began a rehab assignment with Single-A Clearwater on July 28. Covey has not pitched since his final Grapefruit League appearance on March 1. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 1. (Last updated: July 28)

RHP (Tommy John surgery; No. 1 on Phillies Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Painter has progressed to throwing off a mound in Clearwater, Fla., after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late July 2023. He is not expected to return to game action until the 2025 season. The right-hander remains the No. 19 overall prospect -- and No. 4-ranked pitcher -- in baseball, per MLB Pipeline. Painter will still be just 21 years old on Opening Day next year. RHP Luis F. Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Possibly 2025
Ortiz underwent Tommy John surgery on July 11 and will be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 season and most, if not all, of the '25 campaign.

Ortiz originally went on the IL because of a sprained left ankle he sustained on March 30. He had started to work his way back from that injury before the Phillies recalled him from his first rehab assignment in late April after he started to experience inflammation in his right shoulder. That had subsided enough for Ortiz to begin another rehab assignment on June 11, but his recovery was once again derailed when he began experiencing forearm discomfort before further testing revealed the need for surgery. Ortiz was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 5. (Last updated: July 11)
