July 26: RHP Paul Blackburn activated off IL; LHP Hogan Harris optioned
Blackburn was activated from the injured list and started Friday night against the Angels. The right-hander has not pitched since May 10 after suffering a right foot stress reaction. Before the injury, Blackburn had a 4.11 ERA in eight starts.

Manager Mark Kotsay said on Thursday that Blackburn will be on a carefully planned pitch count of around 65-70. The 30-year-old broke out in a 2022 campaign that saw him selected to his first All-Star Game for the A's and has developed into a solid starter since then.

In a corresponding move, the A's optioned Harris, 27, to Triple-A Las Vegas. Kotsay said on Thursday that Harris was penciled in to start Sunday's series finale in Anaheim. The A's manager said that start is now TBD, but they "have a few options" and need to get through Friday's game before determining who will pitch.

"We had to make a difficult decision to send Harris out," Kotsay said. "Hogan pitched really well in Houston. Prior to that, he had some bumps in the road, but overall when you look at the big picture, he's progressed really nicely from last year to this year."

July 25: RHP Luis Medina and LHP Alex Wood set to undergo season-ending surgeries
Before Thursday's game against the Angels, A's manager Mark Kotsay said Medina (right elbow strain) is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery with Dr. Keith Meister on Aug. 6.

Medina was placed on the IL on July 13, two days after allowing six runs in five-plus innings against the Red Sox. Medina, who began the year on the injured list with a right knee sprain, had compiled a 2-4 record and a 5.18 ERA over eight starts. Based on the general timeframe for Tommy John surgery, Medina could be looking at missing all or most of next year as well.

Kotsay also said that Wood (left rotator cuff tendinitis) is set to undergo a shoulder procedure that will end his season. The A's manager did not specify the specifics of the surgery, but Wood's season is done after posting a 5.26 ERA in nine starts for Oakland this year.

July 25: RHP Mason Miller placed on injured list
The A's placed Miller on the injured list on Thursday with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal (pinky finger) in his left hand.

Before Thursday’s game against the Angels, A's manager Mark Kotsay said that the non-pitching injury occurred when Miller pounded a padded training table out of frustration following Monday night’s 4-0 victory over the Astros. The right-hander closed out the win with a 1-2-3 ninth on 11 pitches.

“The truth is postgame Monday night after being done with his pitching, Mason came in the training room and was going through his recovery. He was reminded that he had a postgame lift to get in,” Kotsay said. “Out of a little frustration, he just kind of pounded his fist down on a padded training table out of emotion. Unfortunately, he’s not able to squeeze his glove and he got himself put on the IL.” More >>

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP Mason Miller (fractured left pinky finger)
Expected return: TBA
Miller was placed on the injured list on Thursday with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal (pinky finger) in his left hand.

Before Thursday’s game against the Angels, A's manager Mark Kotsay cleared up some confusion about how Miller hurt himself. Kotsay said that the injury occurred when Miller pounded a padded training table out of frustration following Monday night’s 4-0 victory over the Astros.

Kotsay said that Miller will be able to throw while he's out -- including some side sessions in San Francisco next week -- and added that Miller is in a cast now and should be reevaluated in a few weeks. The bigger issue is Miller being able to wear a glove, which is complicated with the cast and injury. (Last updated: July 25) More >>
