Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is an admirable effort to find a way of introducing more characters and an all-new plot-line, while also in some ways going back to the fundamentals in terms of storytelling and structure. I do wish the Idea Factory people would give up on this action combat system when the turn-based approach was less obviously affected by the budget, but the usual gorgeous fanservice art and antics of the characters kept me smiling throughout.
Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is a lovely game with a fun-filled story. It may have many recycled elements and stages from the previous game but more often than not, it's still a treat to play.
Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is a solid new entry in the long-running franchise that excels in some ways and falls short in others. The combat is fast-paced, but does get draining due to the repetitious dungeon structure and lack of auto-battle as a feature. Fortunately, the strong voice acting serves as a motivator to keep going as does seeing where the amusing story will go. Visually, it retains the core look of the PS Vita-rooted series, just with a cleaner look across the board when compared to the older portable hardware. Thankfully, the framerate doesn't falter on the PS5 and the game as a whole is a solid recommendation to those who enjoy the franchise already -- and is a solid starting point for those looking to get into it since the gameplay is in-line with other entries, just more fine-tuned.
Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is a mixed bag. If you want a charming story with plenty of nerdy goofs about consoles from the 90s, you’ll find something to enjoy here. If you want interesting and in-depth mechanics, then you’d be better off looking elsewhere. One for the established fanbase that’s unlikely to win over many newcomers.
A reoccurring goal in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series is saving gaming from imminent disaster. But ironically, Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution demonstrates some of the real-life ailments of the industry, with a lazy spin off built around salvaged concepts and sloppy combat. Undoubtedly, Nep Nep and the rest of the Guardian Goddesses deserve far better.
Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution stands out for a novel protagonist choice and some new characters with endearing dynamics. Yet, the tiring and frustrating combat design, dull narrative, and overabundance of lackadasical growth make this an adventure you're better off avoiding. This is an unfortunate, substantial drop in quality from Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters.
Neptunia Game Maker (R)evolution is another stinker in a long line of disappointing Neptunia series entries. I love these characters and their world, but this is a flat action-RPG with a barebones management game bolted onto it that do not do them right by any means.
As someone who loves fanservice, this series/company has disappointed me once again.
THE GOOD:
The 2D drawn character scenes are done very well, the menus run at 60 FPS, there are all the memorable characters from Neptunia VII and some new ones, newish music (I think?), some "new" level designs are about all of the good things I can say.
THE BAD:
The story is ironic as ever, they are making games (trying for the triple AAA market) and this game is basic rinse and repeat gameplay. Running in levels and combat is locked at 30 fps even on PS5. The combat is simply press X or Square and you can do a full combo (much like in the turn base games but as "action" instead of turn based), then switch to another character to "link" and do a combo string that can result in overwhelming damage. I stopped fighting everything all the time because they constantly respawn and are super easy. Bosses are pretty easy overall and can be killed by pressing X, then D-pad direction, pressing X, D-pad direction, etc. boom dead.
The story is so boring I can't believe this is the same group that wrote the original game, or VII, or even goddesses online (my first game and Iiked that one a lot). Your group is a company called "victory" and your making games. I am so underwhelmed with this because of how bad this game plays. The conversations are not nearly as clever, funny/witty as the older games and I can't play without being bored by them talking so much too; AND they have a lot of unvoiced dialogue. You can gather developers that are NPCs to make game discs, these NPCs liken to the older games with the random overworld random funny NPCs you can collect and talk to.
This game looks like it was made for the gamecube. The levels are so outdated I feel like I can remember how 90's bowling alleys look. Straight hallways, barely any elevation changes, stiff movement, boring flat textures, saturation and brightness issues.
No graphics options at this time. No PC port at this time either, can't say I recall if it will happen.
SummaryIn the world of Gameindustri, which is based on the real-world games industry, beautiful girls themed after fictitious game consoles are the stars in this latest "Personification x Moe! x Transformation" RPG. Please look forward an even further enhanced Neptunia game with the addition of the new "management" system.
