In honor of National Hire a Veteran Day, Landrea, an Administrative Assistant and U.S. Army Veteran, shares her experience. Read about her roles during service and at Indeed, along with valuable advice for employers on why they should hire a veteran. "I enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2007 through the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). Following basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, in October 2007, I began my 50+ week Radiologist Specialist Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. This training included classroom instruction and on-the-job training at Darnall Army Medical Center. After graduating from AIT, I was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, where I worked as a Radiology Technician. I primarily worked in the Orthopedic Surgery department, providing pre-op and post-op X-rays, operating the C-Arm for live fluoroscopy during surgeries, and setting up for epidural steroid injection procedures." "I joined Indeed in April 2022 as an Administrative Assistant, supporting four Vice Presidents in Marketing. Having worked in an administrative role for over 20 years, this was my first time in the HR tech space. There were so many new skill sets that I was able to add to my wheelhouse as a result of working in this capacity. In May 2024, I transitioned to supporting Strategy and Corporate Development. I am also a proud member of multiple Inclusion Business Resource Groups (IBRGs), including BIG, iPride, and Veterans and Allies." "My advice for any employer considering hiring a veteran is to understand that each veteran’s experience is unique. Military service instills a sense of adaptability and resilience. Veterans bring a calm, focused approach to challenging situations, with discipline, punctuality, and a strong work ethic. We are used to following procedures and completing tasks with precision and dedication." "Veterans also bring a diverse range of skills and experiences, often having received training in technical areas, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork under high-pressure conditions. Many veterans pursue further education and training after service to enhance their skill sets." "One of the most prevalent challenges for prior service members is transitioning from military to civilian life. Employers should offer support through mentorship programs, transition assistance, and clear career pathways to help veterans integrate successfully into the organization." To show their support during World Refugee Day, Indeedians engaged in activities with Casa Marianella in Austin, the International Rescue Committee chapter in Seattle, and Kiron in Germany. On a local level, Indeed conducted a presentation for refugee and immigrant residents enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, teaching them how to use Indeed’s hiring platform and assisting with job search dialogue exercises. For the second year in a row, Indeedians in Seattle partnered with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to host a Job Squad workshop, equipping IRC-Seattle clients with essential skills and resources to pursue employment opportunities. Virtually, Indeedians participated in a World Refugee Day webinar featuring Kiron, a German nonprofit dedicated to bridging skill gaps and promoting inclusion by providing refugees with free access to high-quality education. Following our initial response to the War in Ukraine, Indeed has continued to partner with humanitarian organizations and government agencies to connect refugee job seekers to employment opportunities through our refugee job fair events series. Between December 2022 and October 2023, Indeed held the biggest series of job fairs yet, with seven events in six cities, including Krakow, Berlin, Amsterdam, Milan, London, and Warsaw. The series now has ambitious plans for 2024 with additional job fairs planned to expand the program to more European cities, including Dublin and Paris. This work brings our mission of helping people get jobs to life in an incredibly meaningful way. Sometimes we sit behind computers all day and don’t recognize the millions of people we are supporting and the communities they’re a part of.
