Through the Healthy People 2030 program, the federal government has set for the first time a national target for youth sports participation: 63% by the year 2030. To help reach the target, #ProjectPlay convenes leading organizations that have made multi-year commitments to measurably grow sport participation rates among youth. We're proud to launch our new vision: #63X30. Join us!

Pickleball continues to explode. Maryland's largest school district was the first in the U.S. to offer pickleball as a varsity sport by piloting it at 11 high schools last year. Now all 25 Montgomery County high schools will have a pickleball team. Pickleball is being offered as a varsity sport as part of the school district's corollary sports program, which aims to offer more participation opportunities for students with and without disabilities.

Youth sports programs in Aspen are already trying to address the wealth gap in youth sports through scholarships - but the time commitment and deposits required to apply can themselves be barriers. One possible solution: collaboration between programs.

State of New York announced $4.2 million in grants for youth team sports programming, education & equipment in underserved New York City neighborhoods. Recipients include organizations supporting girls sports, nonbinary youth, and youth with special needs. The funding is part of a larger investment in youth sports programming statewide. A total of $15 million is available across two funding sources under the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS). In New York City, sports funding will create opportunities for young people under 18 years old in: * Historically under-resourced communities. * Neighborhoods that experience higher rates of crime and violence and low-performing schools. * Communities with high rates of public housing and/or family homelessness. * Marginalized communities or groups with higher barriers to participation in team sports (e.g., youth with disabilities; girls; transgender/gender non-binary youth; and youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning). Team sports and activities include volleyball, breakdancing, football, cheerleading, swimming, lacrosse, skateboarding, pickleball, basketball, baseball, soccer, cricket, figure skating, golf, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and bowling.

In what world do we need 6U T-ball state tournaments? This team in Texas opened with a "wild and wonderful" 32-21 win. The publicity around the tournament and the quotes from this coach are tough to read. We're talking about 5- or 6-year-olds. "They were nervous (in the first game Monday), but finally settled down and played baseball like we had all season. They never gave up or shut down and dug deep to finish it out." "I tell them, 'Practice like you've never won and play like you've never lost.' That's a quote from Michael Jordan." "I was proud of all the kids. We finished in the Top 10." "I don't know what I'm doing. But I'm doing something right." In reality, this coach is not doing it right. He's creating a hyper-competitive environment for young children that will weed out kids before they even know if they want to play baseball and have the skills to do so. I saw it with my son in T-ball many years ago. He "retired" at age 6 after his second season of T-ball because it was way too competitive and not fun. Good rule of thumb: If you're keeping score in T-ball and it's adding up to 32-21, stop keeping score and certainly don't create a tournament around this.

One common challenge we find in our community State of Play reports: a lack of safe routes to play spaces for children. Our Aspen-to-Parachute report offered four ideas to help kids get moving.
