Do You Have What It Takes to Be a 'Personality Hire'?

Good afternoon! Today we're exploring what happens when personality trumps skill in the job market, the impostor syndrome some bosses feel about AI and what the sweet spot for hybrid work is at the best-managed companies.

The Charming Employees Who Make Workplaces More Fun

Vienna Ayla stars in “personality hire“ skits with tens of millions of views on TikTok and Instagram.

If you get further on charm than skill and carry a workload light enough to float atop your bubbly demeanor, then you might be a “personality hire.”

Charismatic employees lay the foundations of positive corporate cultures—or leave teammates to pick up the slack. While some people proudly advertise themselves as personality hires on LinkedIn, others roll their eyes.

The potential of artificial intelligence isn’t just flummoxing tech entrepreneurs. Chances are your boss is standing at the base of the learning curve, too—right next to you. Rarely has such a transformative, new technology spread and evolved so quickly, even before business leaders have grasped its basics.

No wonder that in a recent survey of 2,000 C-suite executives, 61% said AI would be a “game-changer.” Yet nearly the same share said they lacked confidence in their leadership teams’ AI skills or knowledge.

Personality hires in my experience in my industry have been done at levels that cause a lot of issues and led to unethical behavior being tolerated, creating intolerable work environments. At one point one of them was under the influence without entire team and said they never cared if anyone was ever qualified, only if they liked the person. They then said ambitious people were a huge turn off using a quote from my 5 year personal Development plan we’d discussed privatley. If someone had the majority of the skills and they have a better personality and the team can cover the skills gap, that’s the only situation where a personality hire could be considered.

The concept of a 'personality hire' highlights the value of soft skills in the workplace. While charisma can create a positive work culture, it's essential to balance it with tangible contributions. On AI, it's clear that many leaders are still grappling with the technology's potential, as shown by the 61% of C-suite executives who see it as a game-changer but lack confidence in their team's AI knowledge. Lastly, finding the sweet spot in hybrid work can significantly enhance productivity and employee satisfaction.
