Building Careers at Amazon

Each year, Amazon welcomes thousands of undergraduate, graduate, and post-grad interns to help us innovate on behalf of customers around the world. This summer alone we proudly hosted over 5,000 interns across more than 100 Amazon locations worldwide.

Our internships cover the gamut of Amazon’s businesses, and include opportunities in sustainability, robotics, operations, software development, accounting, artificial intelligence, marketing, human resources, user experience, product development, and more.

Amazon is a place where you are given the freedom to build, which makes it a great opportunity for people starting out in their careers. Over the years, many of Amazon’s senior leaders – including Stephenie Landry, VP of Prime Now, and Matt Garman, VP of Amazon Web Services – joined Amazon following their internships. Our interns are integrated into the fabric of their teams and given responsibility for owning and completing projects that have a measurable impact on the customer experience.

For example, this summer an intern in Seattle created a tool that makes it simpler for software developers to design Amazon web pages that are easier to navigate for our visually and hearing impaired customers, while two interns developed a mechanism that allows millions of third-party sellers to gain greater insight into product returns, helping them to better manage their inventory and businesses. And a team of sustainability interns applied spatial analytics to ensure that trucks leaving our fulfillment centers are packed even more efficiently, thereby reducing wasted space, and eliminating the need for additional trucks, saving on fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to being valued contributors to their teams, we also promote cross-collaboration among our interns. In July we hosted a global hack-a-thon that involved 700 interns from five different countries who were challenged to come up with an Alexa skill that would surprise and delight Alexa users around the world. The winning idea, based on “The Best Use of Alexa in the Kitchen,” is currently in the final phase of testing, and we look forward to incorporating this new skill for Alexa in the coming months.

Whether they work in the U.S., Italy, Spain, Ireland, India, South Africa, or dozens of other countries, all of our interns share a passion for innovating, building and inventing.

On behalf of my colleagues, I’d like to thank all of the interns for their commitment to building a better Amazon for our customers, and look forward to welcoming many of you back as full-time employees. Best of luck with your studies!

What percentage of the total Amazon workforce are temp labor at any given time? Especially the actual operations - warehousing, pick and pack, shipping - and not the "social media managers" and the like...
