🎉 TikTok has announced that users in the EU will be able to opt out of their content-selection algorithm. This move, driven by the EU's Digital Services Act, is a milestone towards protecting cognitive liberty and offers a significant step towards giving users more control over their digital experience. 👁️🗨️ TikTok's algorithm, which learns from user interactions, can shape preferences and behaviors without full awareness or consent. The new changes will allow users to see trending videos or a chronological feed, prioritizing popular regional content. It also includes protections for young users and tools for reporting illegal or harmful content. 📚 In my book, The Battle for Your Brain: Defending the Right to Think Freely in the Age of Neurotechnology, I explore the urgent need to protect cognitive liberty in the digital era. While the TikTok policy change is a win, it's just the beginning. 🌍 We must develop a well-structured global plan, combining regulations, incentives, and commercial redesigns, focusing on cognitive liberty. This includes legal safeguards against mental manipulation, transparency about algorithm workings, assessment tools to measure AI's influence, tax incentives for innovative business practices, and adopting design principles that embody cognitive liberty. 🔥 It's time for global action to prioritize cognitive liberty in the digital age and not leave control over our minds solely to technology companies. Let's work together to update our digital rulebook and safeguard user rights. 🔗 Want to know more about this vital issue? Read the full article here (https://lnkd.in/d6DcNYnU) and join the conversation on how we can prioritize cognitive liberty in our increasingly digital world! #CognitiveLiberty #DigitalAge #TikTok #AIRegulation

Australia Collaborates with Tech Giants to Block AI-Generated Child Abuse Material in Search Results Australia is taking steps to prevent the sharing of child sexual abuse material generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in search engine results. The country's internet regulator, e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman - Grant, announced that the nation will now require search engines to ensure that such content doesn't make it to search results. To do this, Australia has developed a new code in collaboration with industry giants like Google and Bing. The new code will help ensure that search engines prevent the sharing of AI-generated child sexual abuse material. It will also require safeguards to prevent AI functions of search engines from producing synthetic versions (deepfakes) of such content in search results. #Australia #ChildAbuseMaterial #AI #TechGiants #SearchResults #InternetSafety #Deepfakes #Regulation #OnlineSafety #AIRegulation #Google #Bing #DigitalSafety #OnlineProtection #AIInnovation

🕵️ The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently investigating Reddit's proposal to license user-generated content for AI model training, as revealed in a recent SEC filing. This scrutiny comes as Reddit prepares for its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO), aiming to be the first social media platform to go public since Pinterest in 2019. #FTCInvestigation #RedditIPO #AIModelTraining 📈 Reddit's plans to sell user content to third parties for AI training have sparked widespread criticism and concern among its users, particularly regarding privacy and the ethical use of their contributions. This move, intended to enhance stock value ahead of the IPO, has raised questions about user consent and the commodification of personal discussions. #UserPrivacy #EthicalAI #SocialMedia 📜 According to Reddit's IPO filing, the FTC's inquiry is focusing on the platform's sale, licensing, or sharing of user-generated content with third parties for AI training. Reddit maintains that its actions do not violate consumer protection laws, while privacy advocates argue that such practices infringe on users' expectations and privacy rights. #ConsumerProtection #PrivacyAdvocacy #TechRegulation 🚫 The controversy centers on whether Reddit's business strategy constitutes unfair or deceptive practices under Section 5 of the FTC Act. The investigation reflects broader concerns about privacy, consent, and the ethical boundaries of using user data in the rapidly evolving AI sector. #FTCAct #DataEthics #ArtificialIntelligence 💼 Reddit's recent deal with Google, reportedly worth $60 million annually, to share user data for AI training highlights the platform's strategic pivot towards data licensing. With its IPO on the horizon, Reddit aims to explore data licensing opportunities aligned with its values, despite the potential regulatory and reputational risks. #DataLicensing #GooglePartnership #StrategicPivot 🚦 The FTC's probe into Reddit's data licensing for AI training underlines the increasing regulatory attention on the intersection of social media, user privacy, and artificial intelligence. As technology companies navigate this complex landscape, they face challenges in balancing innovation with ethical considerations and regulatory compliance. #RegulatoryScrutiny #TechInnovation #EthicalChallenges #publicoffering #socialmedia #reddit #pinterest #gopublic #usercontent #socialmediaplatform #social #federal #commission #news #offering #stockexchange #media #parties

Even if you enjoy some benefits of 'the algorithm' an off switch is a must have. In digital citizenship education I can see practicing with young people by comparing your social feed with 'personalization' to one without. Users, especially young people, need to better understand what personalization really means. We need a chance to ask whether something is truly being personalized for our needs, or if we are being turned into a product for a advertisers https://lnkd.in/gFj9uQeU

Google has published its annual Ads Safety Report highlighting the actions we took last year to keep users and advertisers safe on our platforms and to maintain a healthy digital advertising ecosystem. Generative #AI tools have enabled us to take a major leap in our enforcement efforts, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), so that we can better keep people safe online. At a high-level, in 2023: ➡ We blocked or removed over 5.5 billion ads for violating our policies. That's more than 9,000 ads per minute. ➡ We suspended more than 12.7 million advertiser accounts for egregious policy violations, nearly double the amount we suspended in 2022. ➡ We removed ads from over 2.1 billion pages last year. ➡ We added or updated 31 policies for both advertisers and publishers. Read the blog post for more details on how we’re keeping the ads ecosystem safe for advertisers, publishers and users. goo.gle/ads-safety-report #AdsSafetyReport

🌟 Privacy in the Age of Hyper Personalization by AI 🌟 Norway is upholding its emergency ban on behavioural-based advertising on Meta platforms. This is a positive development. We need to develop guardrails in the era of hyper-personalized content generated by AI. AI will continue to leverage our personal data to produce content that deeply resonates with our individual preferences & inclinations and powerfully nudge us to take certain actions. These actions could be benign, like buying certain products or services, or extremely harmful, like voting for a particular political party or encouraging support for certain policies). We need to carefully strike the balance between the benefits that personalized experiences can bring us with safeguarding our ability to think and act freely. A reality we must conscientiously navigate to foster a future that values not only innovation but personal autonomy. 💡 #DataPrivacy #HyperPersonalization #FutureOfAI #artificialintelligence #privacy #privacycompliance #iapp #datasharing #dataanalytics #compliancerisk IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals https://lnkd.in/eHZXRRw4
