The BMJ’s ‘ten minute consultation’ is a series that gives GPs an outline of what they need to cover in a standard ten minute appointment slot with a patient who consults them about a specific condition. Carol Sinnott, who is a GP and THIS Institute Senior Clinical Research Associate, contributed to a paper called “Great expectations? GPs’ estimations of time required to deliver BMJ’s ‘ten-minute consultations.’” The paper took a closer look at the series, and the expectations it put onto GPs, and found that in many cases, GPs didn’t have enough time to cover everything the writers suggested was essential. THIS research has previously found that just three GP tasks - reading a patient’s notes, calling them into the consultation room and then making notes in their chart after they leave - take around two and a half minutes alone, which is 25% of the time available for the consultation! We asked Carol to tell us more: https://ths.im/3SXdTQ8
