☀️Amid scorching heat, Texas is set to approach record levels for power demand in June and July. While the percentage of load renewable generation serves has remained relatively steady, the real game-changer has been the explosion of energy storage deployments (blue). Last summer, ERCOT faced higher prices (pink) and less storage capacity. This year, the difference is stark. With new storage online, we can now better balance the system load (yellow) and net load (orange). The heat is already on for Texas with ERCOT under a "Weather Watch" for Wednesday as temperatures soar. Texas is heavily reliant on renewable energy sources, putting them under great influence of the daily weather. Today featured unseasonably warm temperatures, alongside a lack of wind at hub heights for the afternoon hours, reducing energy output from wind farms. While solar energy is able to assist, we still anticipate higher ERCOT energy pricing throughout the day as a result of decreased supply and increased demand. The transition to a more sustainable power system occurs differently as parameters such as resource availability, demand, transmission capability, approach to interconnection and impact of imports vary between jurisdictions. Among North American ISOs and regulated balancing authorities, ERCOT exhibits some of the most profound changes. • ERCOT's annual generation mix underwent a significant transformation from 2007 to 2023, as depicted in Figure 1. • Variable renewable energy sources experienced notable growth, elevating their share from 9% to 31% over the period. • Coal saw a substantial decline in the energy mix, being supplanted by wind and solar power, with wind reaching a saturation level at 24% while solar is poised for further expansion, albeit still in its nascent stages within Texas. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 #CSP with molten salt thermal storage is unique compared to photovoltaic solar or wind energy because it can generate electricity using steam turbines whenever needed. This capability makes it valuable for stabilizing the electric system and supplying energy at night when other low-carbon options are unavailable. However, CSP's potential extends beyond electricity generation. Instead of solely converting heat into electricity, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱. In various industrial processes, access to heat is as crucial as access to electricity. Approximately 74% of global industrial energy demand is for heat, constituting about 30% of worldwide power consumption, as per the International Energy Agency. Much of this demand involves temperatures below 400ºC, well within the range #Concentrated #Solar Power can provide. Tough day today for the ERCOT system! It seems it would be difficult to avoid rolling outages today, if demand and wind output for today stand as projected unless there is significant demand response participation and outages are way lower than current level of 13 GW. See below the expected supply/demand balance from 6am CT to 1pm CT today based on the demand, solar, wind projections as of 12am CT. It is expected that weather watch may need to be extended further from existing 6am to 10am CT duration. It is again coming true that managing extreme winter load is more challenging than extreme summer. the key driver is, load in winter stands at almost the same elevated level for many hours which makes it further difficult to manage system including charging of storage.
