Someone asked me, can a hiring manager know which of the SOC Analyst applicants are good candidates based on their resume?
The answer is No.
But you can consider several factors to help you decide which one gets that interview.
1️⃣ Watch out for that sensitive information being shared like:
Date of birth, complete address, parent's name, marital status, religion, etc. This shows the candidate does not really understand the industry they are in or maybe they lack the passion.
2️⃣ Candidates using generic statements like:
I've attended meetings, helped a colleague, worked with L2, requested for tuning and etc.
Instead, look for how many alerts they have triaged in a day, what type of alerts they're comfortable handling like lateral movements, phishing, etc.
Which types of alerts the most challenging and how they addressed it.
Emphasis on the business impact they made at their current role, operational and self-improvements.
3️⃣ Some applicants describe "What a SOC Analyst do" vs "What they can actually bring on the table" on their resume.
Most SOC applicants have the same description. If you are applying to become a SOC Analyst or wanting to transfer company for the same role, you must be able to showcase why you are the one they need. Your resume should at least match the job description posted.
Hiring managers will try to look for people who they think might be a good fit to what they are looking for. Indicating which EDR, SIEM, XDR, Email Security, Ticketing tool you know how to use might be a good advantage.
Experience reading logs from various sources, threat hunting activities, threat intel assignments, and doing an incident response might be helpful as well.
Resume writing is a skill and an art. It is so crucial that sometimes, people with good resume gets an interview rather than those who are really good but have poorly written resume.
You need to ask yourself this question.
How can I make the hiring manager see that I am the perfect fit for this job posting and how good I am at this work?
This can be applicable to other industries too.
♻ Repost if you agree.
