Of these, Lancet suggests that 1.6 million are in India alone. Of the 7 million deaths due to ambient and indoor air pollution worldwide, almost 4.5 million are due to Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD) and stroke. Globally, 22% of deaths from ischaemic heart disease and 15% from stroke were attributable to air pollution. Despite the awareness of air pollution harms, PM2.5 levels declined globally by just 1% annually between 2010 and 2019. In India, the mean air pollution of 50.1 µg/m3 is the highest in the South & East Asia region. Air pollution—which has been shown to have damaging effects on most organs of the body—is the 6th biggest risk factor for mortality globally, the 7th for disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and the number 1 environmental risk factor for ill health and death. Despite this, only 1% of global development funding is directed to efforts to tackle air pollution The recommendations of the World Heart Report https://bit.ly/3Vf0i9a are: 1. All countries must adopt the new WHO global guidelines on air quality. This includes making a roadmap of strategies to meet the interim targets outlined by WHO whilst progressing to the overall guideline level. Policies should be multifaceted and multi-sectoral, encompassing, among others, health, housing, city design, transport, and agriculture. 2. WHF supports the implementation of a global fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty. Country commitments to these treaties must be maintained, ideally through legally binding agreements, and suitable implementation strategies must be employed to rapidly reduce the use of fossil fuels. 3. Countries and technical bodies, particularly in LMICs, should urgently improve air pollution monitoring and modelling where there are gaps. This includes expansion of the stationary monitoring network in both rural and urban areas that will help provide more accurate estimates of air pollution levels and trends. 4. Countries, multilaterals, and philanthropies must increase funding into multidisciplinary air pollution research and technological innovations to improve air quality and strategies to implement interventions for reducing air pollution. 5. Health and research agencies at country, regional, and global levels should conduct additional studies into the cardiovascular effects of air pollution and CVDs linked to ambient and household air pollution, in addition to the role of the cardiovascular system in the disease of other organs. This should include the study of the cardiovascular effects of less-wellresearched air pollutants, so that policies and interventions can target the air pollutants that are most harmful. Delhi Pollution: A Looming Crisis in winters! Delhi, the capital city of India, has been grappling with a severe and persistent air pollution problem for several years. While this issue is not new, it continues to pose a significant threat to the health and well-being of the city's residents. The combination of factors contributing to this problem is complex, and the consequences are far-reaching. Its been a year for me living in NCR and trust me when I say this, Delhi winters have become an impending doom. Almost everyone faces burning and watering of eyes, difficulty breathing and headaches while going out. The best thing that i have invested while living here is an air purifier. It does surprise me to see that the people are actually not very much bothered about this health hazard. I hardly see any one wearing a mask on the road and as DIWALI approaches almost everyone is burning crackers in our society when they are actually banned here! So this post is to create awareness on this issue and people should know what it can do to their health and its high time that the government takes adequate action to curb this problem. While the health risks are complex so is the solution. 1. Respiratory Issues and cardiovascular issues: Air pollution in Delhi contains high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and harmful gases like nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. These pollutants can irritate the respiratory system, leading to conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of heart diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. Fine particulate matter can enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and contributing to the development of cardiovascular issues. 2. Reduced Lung Function: Air pollution can harm lung development in children and lead to reduced lung function in adults. This can result in decreased physical activity and lower quality of life. 3. Premature Mortality: Studies have shown that the high levels of air pollution in Delhi lead to premature deaths. The tiny particles in polluted air can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, increasing mortality rates, especially among individuals with preexisting health conditions. 4. Increased Risk of Cancer: Exposure to air pollutants, particularly carcinogens like benzene and formaldehyde, raises the risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers over time. 5. Impacts on Children: Children are especially vulnerable to the health effects of air pollution. Poor air quality can lead to developmental issues, including cognitive deficits, and increased risk of cancer! 6. Mental Health Issues: Emerging research suggests a link between air pollution and mental health issues, including depression and anxiety! Delhi's Air Pollution Crisis!! This For the last 5-7 years, Delhi has endured this unbearable air pollution, and it feels like our voices are lost in the toxic haze. The city has become notorious for this recurring nightmare. Once again, we find ourselves choking on the city's hazardous air. The air quality index (AQI) has soared to alarming levels, with some areas breaching the hazardous 400 mark. Every winter, farm fires, firecrackers, and unfavorable weather conditions conspire to turn the city into a gas chamber. The blame game between Delhi and Punjab has been played for years, but let's face the facts. The ongoing pollution crisis has health experts on edge, especially when it comes to our most vulnerable citizens – the children and older adults. It's a grave situation, and it's high time for the government to take action on its shoulders. It is not rocket science, but apparently, it's too complex for our government to handle. More than finger-pointing; we need action! We must lead ourselves towards sustainable solutions, and it's not impossible. Just like Bangalore's Water crisis, it's also important to think about the solutions for city like Delhi and other metropolitan cities. Let's talk and focus more on the solutions rather than the problems: 1. Segregate Waste: The majority waste that we dump without proper seggregation becomes what we breathe. 2. Encourage Public Transport: If driving a car is what educated ones do, then I don't think it's actually right. One need to use public transport whenever there's no need for a bike or a private car. 3. Educate the Youth: The problem we have now cannot be solved in days or months. It will take years to see the change. So, it's the best time to mould the mindset of the youth towards the right direction. 4. Growing Trees: This is the most basic of all, but yet, a very important one. Trees can not only provide us oxygen, not only makes the temperature cooler, but also absorbes dust. So these are the top 4 things I felt that could bring immediate change(of course in the long run) if followed consistently. See, I knew that speaking solutions all of a sudden doens't make much change. But in the longer run ,that's what we all have to do at some point of time in our lives if the current situation goes out of control. So better prevent than sorry. I alone cannot make a change, but all of us can make a change. As I always say, change for the future, in fact, for the brighter future. How do you measure air pollution? A pungent smell when walking behind a car, a horizon tinged with a brownish color, thick smoke that emerges from a chimney, or a throat that itches when we’re painting… Observations that we can make with our senses alone can be very useful in detecting changes in air quality. However, when it comes to quantifying air pollution, we have to get back into the world of science and technology. So what technologies are used to measure pollution levels, and help us control the quality of the air we breathe?  It all depends on what you want to do. There are many technologies for measuring air quality, most often specific to a particular pollutant. These technologies can differ in many ways, such as: their precision, their cost, or size. In the case of research labs or government agencies responsible for providing official air quality measurements at the national level, they will use sophisticated, stationary measuring devices which are precise up to the part per billion (ppb). Each of these fixed stations, which continuously measures pollution in their immediate vicinity, is equipped with several measuring devices called analysers. These analysers are actually high powered mini-computers filled with a lot of expensive tech. They can cost as much as $10,000! The measurement of each pollutant follows standards related to the technology used: radiometry for PM10, photometry or UV spectroscopy for ozone, chemiluminescence for nitrogen oxides, infrared spectroscopy for carbon monoxide are some examples of the different technologies used. These official station measurements are extremely valuable. They are used both to develop estimates of air pollution anywhere in the country (not just around stations!) and to make forecasts over time. Can I measure the air quality in my home?  Outdoor air pollution is a major problem, but maintaining good indoor air quality is also fundamental to our health. We spend on average 80 to 90% of our days indoors, and the air we breathe is often polluted. New furniture, cleaning and beauty products, and paints are all sources of pollution, in particular VOCs. So how can you figure out what you’re breathing at home and what can you do to make it better?  Personal pollution sensors are smaller and more accessible than their government issue counterparts, and allow individuals to not only measure the quality of indoor air, but also to track individual exposure over time. Having access to personal pollution data of this caliber has been proven to help individuals better protect themselves and their loved ones - reducing their overall exposure to air pollution.
