I picked a book about AI development, but I got hooked on the story of Dr. Fei-Fei Li and her family's journey from China to the US in search of a better life. Dr. Li's mother's unwavering love and support inspired her to become one of the pioneering computer scientists in AI. Despite facing many challenges, Dr. Li's mother always encouraged her to follow her dreams. Dr. Li focused on teaching computers and algorithms to understand and empathize with data, such as images, similar to humans. Even though it was challenging and time-consuming, it was very rewarding. Dr. Li's mother reinforced her belief that AI development should always benefit humanity. This conviction led Dr. Li to lead projects to improve healthcare workers' ability to provide quality care to their patients. Additionally, her mother encouraged Dr. Li to speak before the US Congress, providing insights on incorporating more significant ethical considerations into AI. AI is shaping everyone's lives, so its development should be now "a responsibility for all of us." This mother's guidance to her computer scientist daughter to make AI human-centred is proof of that responsibility. #AI #BookReflections #travellinginwards

The future of work: Where do humans stand in an AI-dominated world? In a recent #Bloomberg article, Nobel Laureate economist Christopher Pissarides made an interesting point: #STEM careers, though booming, might be sowing the seeds of their own replacement by #AI. The more talent pours into these fields, the quicker AI grows, potentially taking over these very 'technical' jobs due to its inherent capabilities. Pissarides suggests that young people might want to consider careers rooted in #empathy, interpersonal communication, and other uniquely human traits that AI can't replicate. He highlights hospitality and certain aspects of healthcare that require direct human interaction. While it's hard to argue with the logic that unique human abilities offer the best defense against AI takeover, there's a flaw in Pissarides' binary view of professions. He seems to split them into two camps: one based entirely on empathy and human relations, and the other on maths, analytics, and development where human qualities have no place. But in reality, technical and empathetic skills are spread across all industries and professions, each with their unique nuances. Take software development, for instance. AI might handle coding and testing pretty well, but what about managing a team or convincing company leadership to add a particular feature to their product? Similarly, in analytics, AI can crunch numbers and draw conclusions, but selling an analytical project to a client or pushing for business decisions based on these analyses is another story. In essence, within every industry, there are roles that AI could potentially 'take over' and others that are relatively safe, especially those involving significant human interaction and influence. The more a job requires dealing with and influencing people, the more AI-proof it likely is.

Co-founder of the Center for Innovation at the Scarsdale Public Schools, where I also served as the Director of Instructional Technology and Innovation. View my free white papers at jerrycrisci.com
During a recent visit to one of Microsoft's offices in New York City, I witnessed an extraordinary glimpse into the future of AI. Rutgers professors Kristen Dana and Clinton Andrews discussed their NSF-funded project, SOCRATES (Socially Cognizant Robotics for a Technology Enhanced Society), a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort involving researchers from several academic departments across the university. We know that AI-enabled robots will be sharing our social spaces in the future. The Rutgers team explained how human-centric objectives are a key driver for their work. Professors from the engineering, computer science, psychology, and public policy departments developed a list of questions for planning effective, ethical, and safe implementation of future technology. These questions include: - Does this technology fulfill a vital societal need? - What are the possible unintended consequences? - How will this technology evolve to meet the changing desires and needs of people after it has been deployed? In the first white paper that I posted on my website, I identified the challenge of "lenses" when considering the use of AI in an educational setting. I stated that "The use of generative AI is viewed differently by different people, based on their experience with using it, as well as their belief about whether it will benefit them." The Rutgers SOCRATES researchers found that creating a collaborative team, representing different academic interests and departments, is a solution to this important problem. Their strategy of blending diverse academic perspectives offers a robust solution to the challenges we face in AI development. I am hopeful that other universities and organizations working on AI will adopt a similar collaborative and interdisciplinary approach - it's the most effective way to develop AI in a way that prioritizes humanity. Kudos to this amazing team!
